CIPRO  (CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.   FDA Approval Date: 1987-10-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Uti, unknown illnesses Have uti and other possible illness. Walk-in clinic prescribed cipro because it's very strong. 1st dose, 30 minutes after, felt like crawling out of my skin and body. Very shaky and restlessness. Urges to kick and twitch. (I do have Tourettes) makes my tics worse. I only took 2 but I'm afraid it's too late, I'm stopping it. I've had other uti medications and never had any issues before. This cipro is pretty serious Some love it, some nearly died from it. M 41 1 days

1  UTI The morning of my 3rd day, after taking My 5th pill, my hands started to swell and ache. My ankles are sore and my joints are popping when I move. Stopped right away but fear I took too much. Would not recommend. I only tried it because 2 other antiobiotics did not work. I honestly thought, oh I'm young and healthy, I'll be fine. Ugh F 37 3 days

1  Diverticulitis I took 4 pills of cipro, over a month ago. It was supposed to be a 7 day course of it, but it took only 4 pills to completely cripple me. I have been living on the couch, intense pain from my foot tendons, and all kinds of messed up sensations in my hands and feet. From everything I read, this may or may not be permanent, I may or may not rupture my achilles just by walking, I may or may not rupture my aorta... and I won't necessarily know if I escape THOSE side effects for a few years. Because I reacted at all, I'm a ticking time bomb for all of it. I have no words to describe how terrifying it is to live like this, I am so depressed, so frustrated, and so ANGRY. When I reacted, they shrugged and changed me over to Augmentin, which worked fine with NO side effects. If that was an option, there's NO REASON I should ever have been prescribed this poison. It's black boxed in the US, Health Canada has strong warnings for it, you're only supposed to be given it in extremely dire situations This is an absolutely hellish drug that ruins lives and should only be used in life threatening situations.  1  ear infection in Jan. 2008 I took Cipro for an ear infection. I noticed during the course of medication that several old athletic injuries oddly returned. Two weeks after ending the drug my entire body flushed into tendonitis, and nueropathy. I couldn't walk, wash dishes, nothing. I was bed bound for about 3 months with terrible pain in my upper legs, temporal tendons (side of head), arms, etc. Ears began ringing about a month later. I had a buzzing sensation, tingling, in lower extremities (peripheral nueropathy). After about 4 months (Apr 2008) I forced myself (on account of work) to move. I had to walk in the woods for two days. This helped enormously and over a week cleared up a lot of my symptoms. (However, I was very concerned about tendon rupture so took it very slow and easy...) Over the next several months I continued to resume my activity and my symptoms abated about 85% better. A next 10% recovery occurred over the next year. I still have a few lingering affects (the other 5%) and will likely have these forever (I'm 12 years out). They include temporal discomfort (temporal tendon was severely effected), persistent tightness in right quad (both legs severely affected), and tinnitus. These are just reminders of the event more than anything that slows me down, or that I dwell on. I post all this to say that when you are in the thick of it - you can't walk, and can't work, and you're depressed reading horror stories on the web and see no end in sight, as I was, there is a light at the end. Other than hot baths, being gentle on myself, I didn't do much to recover. I saw doctors some of whom thought I was nuts, and others were familiar with the reaction, but had to strategies to help. Our bodies are resilient and time will help. When I had it there were few recommendations as to how to recover. I'm not sure if there are now. But our bodies have the capacity to heal these things and so be hopeful and patient. M 42 10 days

1  Post-surgical hematoma Almost all joints clicking for many months. Dull pain in knees and can't flex both knees past ~100-110 degrees. Never had any problems before. A lot has already been said. Considering the enormous amount of prescriptions this drug, being actually an antibiotic of deep reserve, has become one of the most evil poisons on the market. M 35 5 days

1  UTI It’s been two years since I took Cipro for an uncomplicated UTI. At first, my symptoms were extreme anxiety/panic disorder, fibromyalgia like pain especially in my legs, joint pain, severe brain fog, loss of appetite, palpitations, high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, POTs, extreme fatigue, food/drug sensitivities, As time has gone on, hair loss, migraines, OCD and crazy anxiety, depression lingers, I was diagnosed with a heart regurgitation on top of POTs. Pots symptoms have dramatically lessened since diagnosed, although my heart beat is very erratic. I’ve been able to start working out again recently. My Food sensitivities have lessened. I can eat without fearing a reaction now. I was 25 when I was poisoned by this drug. I was a healthy young mom who loved CrossFit and whitewater kayaking. Was I genetically predisposed to this? I’m not sure. But I do know I wouldn’t gamble on it if I were given the chance again. If my doctor told me the warnings, I wouldn’t have taken it. There are plenty of other antibiotics out there. Choose another one over this one. Don’t risk a reaction. Avoid completely. Because ominlike other antibiotic reactions, these can be disabling and permanent. F 27 2 days

1  UTI Today marks ten years since my life was completely stolen from me by this demonic drug. A full decade of my life: GONE. 3,652 days: GONE. All from a mere 12 pills taken exactly as prescribed. I had just turned 30 when I stupidly trusted my doctor to 'do no harm'. Today I am 40. The first six or so years of this nightmare were spent housebound and in agonizing full-body pain. The last four years have only gotten worse; I am now bedridden and am still in pain 24/7/365. There has been absolutely no relief. I recall reading in The Flox Report that if you fall victim to this horrific drug it can take up to eight years to recover. Well a decade later I can now report with 100% certainty that that isn't true. There is no limit to the duration of pain and suffering this stuff can unleash on you. That $6 prescription for Cipro I filled back in 2009 has now cost you, the tax-payer, over $125,000 in SSDI benefits to date and climbing. Meanwhile BAYER gets away scot-free. This should infuriate you, even if you yourself are not a victim of this poison masquerading as an antibiotic. As long as I’m still above ground I will continue warning people about the dangers of Cipro via my website: ciproispoison.com And as always: DEATH TO BAYER! M 40 6 days

1  SIBO Side effects is an understatement for what this drug does to you. I prefer to call it Holocaust, because it was invented by the same company responsible for Auschwitz (Bayer) and you never know what it will do to you and if you ever get out alive, it's the Devil's drug. It has completely destroyed my life and took everything from me. I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET IT BACK! I hope all the people working for Bayer will burn in eternal flames for what they have done to all of us. F 27 5 days

1  Diverticulitis Extreme joint pain, and popping of joints. Severe headache, muscle pain and random pain in wrists and hands.  1  UTI Fatigue, constipation, body aches, extreme itchy skin in certain areas like my back and the tops of my feet. The last day I took it it was around 10 at night. By 11 I felt like I'd been kicked in my upper back, it felt like back labor pain like a 10 on the pain scale. So awful I could not lie down in my bed in any position so I moved to the couch. Then I stopped taking it. The day after I stopped it, I puked once for no reason. Anyway I did not like Cipro at all. Would not recommend if you have any other antibiotic option take that one.  1  UTI, Diverticulitis Dizziness, irratable, tendon pain in the arch of my feet, wrist and sides of my neck. Severe sharp pain in upper left abdominal area under my ribs and left boob, pounding headach, whites of my eyes turned orange and hurt, had to keep them shut to keep the light out. Chest pain and rapid heart beat. Severe irratablity, started talking to myself and seeing things out of the corner of my eye that were not there. Most of the time I was freezing cold with short periods of getting super hot then back to freezing cold. Unable to sleep, which was horrible because I just wanted to sleep until these symptoms passed. I have been 100% non functional since taking this medication . It also gave me diahrrea and painful rotten egg gas. F 59 2 days

1  suspected sinus infection TWO PILLS. That is all it took. Please, do not take this horrible antibiotic or any other one in the Quinolone family, ever. You think you have taken it successfully in the past so you should be fine in the future? Me too. You think people writing here had other health issues that contributed to them being affected by it? I thought that too. I had NO HEALTH PROBLEMS PRIOR. I also successfully took Cipro in the past. I have been dealing with nerve pain, burning, tingling all over my body, insomnia, muscle pain, tendon pain, what feels like bone pain, hair falling out, peripheral neuropathy, intense fatigue (crazy intense, like a flu), and more. Don't do it. There are other options out there. I was affected twice. The first time it took 6 months to nearly heal. Thankfully. This second time it is 9 months. I won't ever be the same as before, but I'm doing pretty good now. I don't want people affected by the antibiotic to think they are a hopeless case...it is not hopeles PLEASE TAKE OFF THE MARKET ASAP. I was not warned. How are there black box warnings on an antibiotic and the patient isn't warned? How? F 39 2 days
