3  Depression/Anxiety I was very dworsy at first, but then I was fine. Lately, since the dosage was increased, I have found myself seeing things out of the corner of my eye, and freaking out about it. I have become very paranoid, and have trouble sleeping. I don't know if it is related, but I have also having erectile problems. if anyont has similar problems, please contact me @ [email protected] M 18 8 months

4  Bipolar II Taking Depkote ER 1000mg/day now. The only side effects were indigestion and sleepiness. I take Pepcid AC OTC right before a med and need another one in the afternoon because the indigestion comes back with the extend release tabs. I also take the Depakote prior to bed and feel fine in the AM. No other side effects though at this point. F 37 7 days

4  Epilepsy I am very fatigued. Most of my freetime is occupied by sleeping. I have frequent mood swings. My appetite is not very healthy. The depakote controls my epilepsy. However, it has a very negative affect on my social life, due to the mood swings and fatigue. M 18 5 years

4  bi-polar fast weight gain of about 5 kilos - CONSTANTLY hungry; severe lethargy in afternoon; very active dreams (which i still don't remember) that seem to disrupt my sleep a bit major stabilization of mood - still have highs n' lows but nothing overly severe and the bottom line is that i'm functional whereas before i wasn't ... i have only been on the medication about 2 months now and it took a really difficult 2 weeks to get adjusted, but once that happened it was like opening a new door. i am much more in control of food-related compulsions and have the energy/desire to workout so the initial weight gain is already fading.  4  bipolar II diarhea, bad hand tremors, and weight gain (because food tasted amazing). Oddly enough, it curled my hair. Worked very well for controlling my moods, but the side effects led me to switch to tegretol. M 38 1 years

3  Manic-Depressive Illness/ Migranes The side effects I encountered were mostly cognitve problems; I had trouble sleeping, my concentration was dramatically affected. Reading was the worst, i could make out a sentence, and then my eyes would just run over the words, not registering what they just saw. I also had slight weight gain, it wasn't much, but I was only on Depakote for a short period of time. Depakote worked very well for calming my mercurial temperment. The side effects caused me to discontinue taking the drug. The reading really got to me; being a college student, reading is something you kind of need... The medicine also worked very well for my migranes, i did not have one occurence during my time taking it. Anyways i would say that if you can put up with the side effects (or maybe you won't have to) Depakote is a great asset for controlling moods. M 19 1 months

2  bipolar 2 I felt like it negated the good effects of my Lexapro and Straterra. I was agitated and angry. My counselor recommended that I avoid any possible confrontational situations. I had only been on it for about 3 days and noticed when I forgot to take one of my two daily doses, I felt way better. I started taking only 1 a day and quit altogether after a total of about 6 days. I left for a trip to Florida and had to share the driving. I didn't think Depakote and road rage (mine and others') was a good combination. So far, I feel better without than with. My husband says I'm much better without it than with. F 47 6 days

2  Bipolar Disorder It kept me stable, but in a stable functioning depression for years. When I came off of it I went through wild withdrawl symptons. If you are more geared towards depression rather than mania, this drug is not for you. Lamictal works well. If your mostly manic, this drug usually works well. But, I was depressed and very rarely manic. M 30 4 years

3  seizures/Grand mal I was on depakote for 12 plus years and I was seizure free. In the end, I was depressed and had weight gain. (10 lbs) I also had several other effects from depakote and I wouldn't recommend it long long term. I did experience some nausa, weight gain, hair thinning and loss, mood swings, major pms (that is for women) and weakness in my muscles. I think i might have a fatty liver now (according to my doctor) but i was completely seizure free on depakote and it did help my seizure control. I was on 750 a day. I think the worst side affects was the moods/depression/pms. F 37 12 years

5  Bipolar II Take 750mg/day. The only bothersome side effect I have from Depakote is lethargy - feel For mood stabilization, it worked wonders for me. Combined with a bit of Celexa and Seroquel, it keeps my condition at bay. I am surprized to see so many people dislike Depakote. Maybe I'm just lucky not to have much side effects... M 26 4 years

4  Epilepsy Dizziness, slight weight gain (10 lbs. total), hair loss (not anything extreme though), nausea every once in a while, dry eyes No seizures, so the side effects are worth it F 25 2 years

4  migraines I get bad stomach cramps from this. I am only taking a low dose of 100mg. I start to forget stuff sometimes. No weight gain or hair loss, thank god. It did stop my migraines when i took it daily but if i missed 2 days i get them back. Its as if my body goes through withdrawel or something. But my main concern is the liver disease that you may get from taking this medicine and the bad stomach pains i get. other then that it's ok. no more migraines. F 29 8 months

5  Migraine Prevention I take 375 mg of Depakote a day, and it has worked wonders. I had a constant drilling headache all day every day, and over time developed classic migraines every day. Life was, to say the least, dark and simply revolving around my constant pain. My Dr and I tried several different drugs before we found the one that worked for me, I even tried Depakote ER for a while but it made me too sick to my stomach, so depakote sprinkles are a miracle! I don't have a constant pain anymore, and I have not experienced a classic migraine since the medicine has built up in my system. I have noticed no side effects and am so happy with the way this medicine lets me live. Don't give up, keep looking until you find the right meds for you! F 21 6 months
