Let me just tell you what my life was like before I started taking zantac: I lived in fear of eating anything, and I LOVE all food. For many years I suffered with stomach issues, it got to the point where after I ate just about anything (no matter the amount) I would have diarrhea, or feel so sick to my stomach I would be hunched over in pain. After I would use the restroom I would have a burning sensation down there that would last for at least 30 minutes, sometimes I would have to lie down it would cause me so much pain. After starting on zantac twice a day, ALL OF THIS CEASED. I realized then how bad my stomach problems actually were. I could eat whatever I wanted again, and drink coffee again, and now I only feel sick to my stomach when I actually AM SICK. When I went to the GI I was told that this drug is more of a histamine blocker as opposed to a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) which is what you really need to take with severe reflux. I didn't have alot of heartburn or indigestion before beginning the med., just alot of pressure behind the sternum along with a cough and a 'funny noise' when swallowing (especially a.m.'s). I was encouraged to try nexium (which I don't think I like what I see as to side effects....AND cost), but they suggested carafate along with a generic form of a PPI and go from there. We'll see. I don't take meds, don't really want to have to start now as the side effects seem to be at times 'worse' than the original symptoms. :O( The natural remedies didn't work with the amount of reflux I was having. Although the effects of the medication help me somewhat, it is far less than the PPI's do. But, it is causing me severe constipation. Reglan seems too strong with all sorts of severe side effects, the PPI's screw up my throat and breathing, and these make me constipated.
