RESTORIL  (TEMAZEPAM):  This medication is used to treat a certain sleep problem (insomnia). It may help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and lessen how often you wake up during the night, so you can get a better night's rest. Temazepam belongs to a class of drugs called sedative-hypnotics. It acts on your brain to produce a calming effect. Use of this medication is usually limited to short treatment periods of 1 to 2 weeks or less. If your insomnia continues for a longer time, talk to your doctor to see if you need other treatment.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  severe insomnia Long story short, I became tolerant to temazepam/Restoril within a few days. My insomnia is so bad I stupidly started taking more than one 30 mg capsule per night just to get a few hours of sleep out of it. I used up my one-month prescription within 10 days and had to cold turkey off of it. (I live in the US, it's 4 controlled substance here). I now have horrible benzo withdrawal symptoms that feel like I am dying. Sometimes I think that would be better than the torture I'm feeling. Extreme anxiety, haven't slept in 3 days and will probably have more sleepless nights ahead. (See the site "benzo buddies" for more info about benzo withdrawal). Tolerance can start very quickly- horrible benzo withdrawal when you stop taking it, especially if you have ever taken a benzo before. (I took ambien 15 years ago and had trouble getting off of it).  1  Insomnia Horrific nightmares. Only slept a couple hours and they were hellish. Major anxiety and grumpiness the entire next day. This is one of the worst medicines I've been on for psychological side effects. Never taking it again. F 40 7 days

1  Insomnia Vivid dreams, nightmares, grogginess all day after waking, irritablity, I was taking ambien but doc didnt want to keep giving it to me because of my addictive personality, although i had no issues of misuse. Gave me temazepam instead. 2 days in and now my somniphobia is coming back because of the horrid vivid dreams i have been experiencing. I havent been able to stay awake the next day and woke up today CONVINCED my dream happened in real life. Its also making me extremely irritated, not sure if thats because im tired and not sleeping well or the medication, either way this is making things worse for me. 2 days into a 10day trial and im not going to be taking it again.  1  Chronic insomnia Horrific night terrors, so real they give me very minor trauma. Usually based in my anxiety fears and irrational fears, but they're extremely terrifying and frightening. Accidentally took 2 one night (poor memory due to ADHD), and thought I was dying because of my nightmares. As someone who doesn't normally have dreams, this has been a legitimately traumatic medication to take and I'm currently quitting it cold turkey because benzo withdrawals are more favorable to falling asleep and waking up with trauma. Do not take this unless it's a last resort. Please try everything else. My experience is not everyone's, but it's been scary enough to throw in my thoughts as a word of caution that this could be an experience for some people. F 24 100 days

1  Insomnia Only short periods of sleep. Then unable to go back to sleep but lay awake engaged in lucid dreaming. Was considering switching to an SNRI for sleep (Cymbalta) but research indicates it has the same potential side effect (unbelievably horrific nightmares and vivid dreaming). M 70 4 days

3  Insomnia Does help with sleep. I’m having very vivid dreams and I’m told I’m talking in my sleep and twitching A LOT! I feel very groggy in the morning and it does take a while for that feeling to go away. Usually a few cups of coffee help I also take pain medication for herniated discs. I have to make sure I don’t take any pain medication after lunchtime to ensure they don’t strengthen the effects of the medication F 47 3 months

2  Insomnia Taking 15mg of Restoril and 0.5mg of clonazepam at night. Restoril for insomnia and Clonozepam for anxiety. Not really satisfied with the Restoril. I take it right before I go to sleep. I can sleep for 3 hours and have a very restless sleep tossing and turning then wake up. I’ve had insomnia for about 3-4 years now and was hoping this would be my wonder drug but it doesn’t do the job. I’d like to sleep at least 5-6 hrs straight instead I awake up then struggle to try and fall back to sleep again. By then it’s time to wake up for the day. I have the craziest dreams or nightmares. I just keep going over the same dream over and over again. I dread going to sleep because I know i’ll Have a night mare. Sometimes I jump up with my chest pounding. I go back to sleep sometimes having the sweats. Beside that I feel groggy in the morning and feel depressed not wanting to do anything but wallow in self pity and even anger because I’m beginning to become dependent on it. I’ve only been on Restoril for a month now so I’m going to just take it as needed because I’m also on the Clonozepam which also makes me sleepy. I take the Restoril as needed. My Dr. Said it’s not for long term use just as needed but now I take it every night. I guess now would be the time to taper slowly. I’ve taken Ambien before also caused me to have weird dreams but I slept longer. I can’t function without at least 5-6 hrs of straight sleep. Not as great as my Dr. said it was. These drs just prescribe these meds like they’re candy from the discount store. They know the drugs are habit forming. At least mine told me to just use as needed, I’m grateful for that. Also these drugs are not good for your kidneys or liver Ask and do your research before filling your prescriptions . I’m sorry I even filled my Restoril script!! F 50 4 weeks

3  Insomnia Nightmares I have tried Ambien in the past-- only works for about 2-3 hours then restless night. Restoril works. I have taken it 5 times over two weeks. It gets me to sleep fairly quickly, I sleep fairly well, I dream, the next morning I feel groggy. Now for the caveat! This drugs creates horrible nightmares and I NEVER have bad dreams. I have very troubling dreams-- one night rattle snakes in my kitchen were after me, fast too, I woke my self up. Another dream I walked in a room and the door locked behind me, the room was filled with yellow jackets. Yes, all the experiences one doesn't want to embrace. I wake up, afraid to go back to sleep. I get one terrible event 4 out of 5 times I take it. Oh, and another bonus to Restoril-- it stays in your system for 48 hours. I can tell my dreams don't return to normal for 2-days after not taking it. I may try taking a lessor amount, but am afraid of the dreams. M 56 2 weeks

2  insomnia, vivid dreams Insomnia, nightly vivid dreams Restoril was prescribed to help with insomnia and the nightly colorful, vivid dreams. It's like watching a movie all night long, every night. Ugh. 15mg hasn't done much for me. I'm not dreaming in color anymore, but I'm still dreaming. I've been fighting my cpap mask at night on this Rx. I never had that happen with Klonopin. I've been upped to 30mg and will see if that allows for some quality sleep and respite from these dreams. F 48 30 days

4  failed back Sx/chronic sciatica mild/mod morning anxiety; guilty feelings for needing to take a benzo. some weird dreams lately. Want to keep sleeping in morning rather than get up,not every AM though. I have taken Ambien first 5mg way back in 1996, off and on; worked great, then stopped working in past few years. Xanax worked great .5-.75 to fall asleep 5 hrs at least, but also stopped working. Restoril seems to work well at this dose; 15mg wasn't enough to keep me asleep past 3-4 hrs. I worry about needing this to sleep forever...tolerance and withdrawal scare me. I am a retired PA w/lots of med experience and just wish I could fall asleep easily(spouse falls asleep in 1 minute, stays asleep all night) and stay asleep. Hot flashes, my snoring husband, my plugged up nose (pollen) and back pain all keep me awake. Restoril helps a lot though and am glad for it, all things considered. I swim 2 miles a day to wear myself out, but even that doesn't work. I hope this med keeps working. F 52 20 days

4  Insomnia strange dreams/nightmares. morning drowsiness. Restoril worked great at first. I would get a full night of sleep and wake up feeling well. I was usually a little bit drowsy in the morning but not too bad. Now it doesn't help me fall asleep very fast. I stay up late and oversleep in the morning. I wake up feeling drowsy. I don't have as much energy. The dreams can be very vivid and scary. M 23 3 months

4  insomnia and restless leg sysndrome I have more dreams that I do remember after waking up in the morning and I wake up because it makes me want to urinate. I developed the insomnia because my roommate sleeps with the television full blast the entire nite and even though I use earplugs and an eye mask I could not stay asleep without the restoril. I wake up refreshed and ready for my daily cup of caffeine to get me started. F 58 3 years
