3  Post Spinal Fusion I'm on Skelaxin, Ativan, Pamelor, Oxycotin(long lasting one) and Dilaudid so I don't know which one causes what BUT I have dry mouth, sweating, craving for sweets and gained 10 lbs in 1 week. Seems to correlate with others description of side effects of Pamelor I was told it's used for 'chronic pain' and hopefully I'll be off of it soon. F 30 30 days

5  Anxiety, Depression Dry mouth, other than that none. Pamelor has worked great for me at 25mg x 4 daily, best TCA in my opinion. M 41 22 years

3  severe depression tiredness, vomiting, ringing in ears at first. Nightmares start and then subside with each increase in dosage, along with constipation and weight loss due to decreased appetite. Sometimes, the appetite loss runs for weeks at a time. started off with 50 mg dose and gradually increased it to 150 mg daily over the years. Scheduled to push to 200 mg daily by year's end, as depression symptoms have started reappearing. I'll need to ask my doctor just how many mg's of this stuff I can take on per day before having to switch or add meds. M 30 17 years

4  migraine trouble thinking, concentrating, amotivation When I first started taking Pamelor 25mg at bedtime, I was also on Topamax, so I attributed most of my cognitive trouble to the Topamax. Now that I am off Topamax, I am still having some trouble connecting the dots, and sometimes the wrong word comes out of my mouth when I mean something else. I also have a hard time staying on task. Like others on this site, I crave sweets, and am starting to gain back the wt. I lost on Topamax. It is a great sleep aid, my migraines are better (also taking verapamil) and no hangover in the morning. I'd like to get down to 10mg at bedtime and see if it reduces the side effects but still helps sleep and keeps the headaches at bay. F 51 3 months

4  Aid for Sleep/ Muscle Pain-10MG day Weight Gain-in a year of taking it I gained weight, it will not budge no matter what I do. If, in fact, its the Pamelor. Other than I cannot relate any significant bad effects @ taking 10mg per night. Is is possible that I feel like decision-making thoughts are sometimes skewed and I am not myself. Don't know if I can attribute this to the Pamelor or not. F 54 12 days

2  Chronic pain and resulting depressi Constipation, solved by eating high fiber diet including Metamucil; craving for sweets, just eat fruit to counter that. I started taking nortriptyline over a year ago for chronic pain and the subsequent depression I experience dealing with it. It does help me sleep a little better at night and I have managed to not gain any weight while taking it (I think this is related to my high fiber diet, since I can hardly exercise at all due to nerve pain and chronic tendinitis. I'm skinny but with zero muscle tone, strange because before all this I was in great shape). I've realized lately that the nortriptyline really hasn't helped the depression or the pain for that matter, and even though I tried upping my dose from 10 mg to 25 mg, all it did was make me incredibly drowsy. Looks like I'm going to be in the market shortly for another form of antidepressant, especially since chronic pain and depression have such viselike grips on one another. F 30 13 months

5  extreme panic disorder Felt a little zoned out in the morning but that side effect stopped after a week or two. I've been taking 10mg once a day for 15 years. This has been a miracle drug for me with the panic attacks. I've tryed Prosac, Zoloft and Paxil. Had very severe side affects from all of them. I have been almost panic attack free for 15 years.  1  depression 60 pound weight gain in 2 months, metabolism shut down, got tired easily. This is the worst medicine that I've taken in the past 6 years and 18 other med trys. I gained 60 pounds in 2 months and we later found out that my metabolism was working at a very minimum level. I haven't gained weight since I stopped taking the meds and got my thyroid working again but I haven't yet been able to loose the weight and it has been 2 years. If I had continued taking it for much longer I would be in severe trouble. F 21 2 months

3  Migranes constipation, weight gain, drowsiness and sluggishness throughout the next day, mental fog At first this was amazing for me. I quickly went from migraines 50% of the time to migraines only 10% of the time. The weight gain has been unpleasant, but I took out an old photo of my great-great grandmother, and reminded myself that middle aged women are *supposed* to look a bit roly-poly. . . Anyway, after the nortryptilan working really well for 18 months or so, my migraines have returned to their original frequency, and are becomeing more intense, as well. So, maybe I am developing a tolerance for it? Maybe I should up the dose? I am concerned about increased constipation, which is uncomfortable and unhealthy. Usually I take about 300mg of stool softener (docusate sodium) every day, and that has helped to keep me regular. F 43 2 years

1  Depression Possibly permanent vision changes, compulsive nibbling Prior to starting Pamelor had vision checked by an ophthalmologist (eye Dr.) Got blurry vision about a week after starting Pamelor 25mg. It didn't go away, so had vision rechecked. It had definitely changed. I talked with my psychiatrist who took me off Pamelor and put me on Prozac which is not known to cause eye problems. Today, 6 weeks after discontinuing the Pamelor, my vision has improved compared to being on the drug, but is still blurry and according to the eye doc has not improved to what it was before starting the drug. So I need to put out $150 for new glasses. M 61 1 months

2  insomnia, sleep related anxiety Tremors/ shaking (especially in hands), dry mouth, zoned out, jittery, slower responses. Started off on 25mg along with 2mg of Lunesta. The first week I took it I felt majorly zoned out. Also had bad tremors during the day. These got a little better after 2 weeks. Eventually increased to 50mg a day at 2 weeks, then 75mg at 4 weeks. I'm sleeping much better but I'm still having issues with shaking and zoning out. The zoning comes and goes, but on bad days I feel like when I'm speaking with people, I have a hard time forming a sentence. Now at 6 weeks, I'm going to try reducing to 50mg per my doctors instructions. If the shaking and zoning issues continue I'm going to go off of it. M 35 6 weeks

5  neuropathic pain, anxiety I started at 5 mg (splitting the 10mg capsule) and increased to the entire pill after a week. I have mitral valve prolapse, and after the increase it was definitely exacerbating the heart palpitations. I had to step up very slowly. I also noticed a little bit of drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation, but they were all pretty minor and easy to deal with. Helped with the pain and was also very helpful for depression and anxiety/panic. Generic version makes it inexpensive. I'm taking 20mg now and thinking of trying to up it to 25 since I think some of the symptoms may be returning. F 23 1 years

4  chronic pain (not taking this drug as an anti-depressant)It has helped chronic pain situation. I am calmer, but a bit thick headed. Need more sleep per night, and I'm hungry more often. Maybe a few very mild hallucinations, like seeing something out of the corner of my eye that wasn't right- but that isn't bad.. :) M 38 60 days

4  TMJ-related migraines weight gain, drowsiness, tiredness I acquired TMJ from a motorcycle accident and at this time have a nasty, nauseating 24-7 migraine unless I take the Pamelor. It has made me feel fairly normal again, but if I exert myself physically and try to lose the bloat and weight it causes, the headaches return. I'd like something stronger that doesn't bloat so I can return to an active lifestyle. F 43 2 months

3  MIGRAINES major weight gain..gained almost 50 pounds in a year- my original neurologist did not warn me about this- new doc is taking me off and switching me to Topamax- I have a big frame, but 50 extra pounds has turned out to be very problematic. has reduced the migraines somewhat, but also noticed that I seem to have developed a bit of a tolarance to it, as migraines has increased slightly after about 18 months. Was taking 100 mg a day- didn't notice tiredness, but did continue with insomnia problems. I read one other user that thought that getting off Pamelor and just dealing with migraine meds was the way to go, I guess I agree- hoping Topamax performs as advertised... M 43 18 months

3  Neuropathy Pain dizziness, drowsiness during the day, some insomnia, constipation (rectal bleeding), nausea (when taken on an empty stomach),excessive sweating, heart palpitations, and increased heart rate. I take for Pamelor to help me sleep at night. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I take it when I'm not tired at night, it tends to keep me awake. It seems to work best when I am already tired. It makes me really sluggish during the day also. You're supposed to stay out of the sun while taking this medication, but it's kind of hard for me to do since I'm in college. It increases my sweating, and makes me feel dizzy when I move around too much. Not the medication I would recommend if you're on the go as much as I am. F 20 3 months
