SUBLIMAZE PRESERVATIVE FREE  (FENTANYL CITRATE):  See also Warning section. Fentanyl belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.  1  Back pain I got an extremely high fever 103.2, I ended up in hospital ER because I could not get it down. I went to family doctor and was told it was a side effect of the fentanyl patch. I only had it on for 24 hours, but I am on day 3 of fighting a fever. The side effect is noted in 5% of people who take the drug. M 39 1 days
