| 3 | To control period pain | I loved it for 3 years, and than it was just too much. In the last year i lost over 20% of my hair in coronal pattern. Gained ~20kg. And that affected self esteem. After 8 months of investigation of the cause of hairloss, everything was normal, and gp suggested to get off depo to see if that is the cause. Getting off of depo was the worst experience ever. Proper withdrawal symptoms, i was a ballon, breast were sore and growing overnight, same for other parts, acne covered me, ugly big pimples type. Extreme fatigue and depression. I hardly eat a part of what i normally do, Often slept 20hrs and gained 1-2 kgs by the time i woke up. Had to buy bras weekly, and new clothes twice a month. After two month i convincedthe GP i have to put stop to this estrogen overdrive, and asked for a new BC, and got Mirena. That stopped this nonsense overnight, melted the extra kilos away, and still going on. | I loved it, but probably used it too long, hence the late side-effects. I would go back if i need to, but for max of 2 yrs at a time, than change back and forfh with the alternative. Never bled on depo. Once my doctor convinced me to get it every 3 months- big mistake, I ended up with spotting and anxiety attacks. I went back to once a year and it works fine to prevent my period (yes, I know that this may not work as birth control). I had been having incredibly heavy and painful periods, to the point where I couldn't concentrate at work on those days. I was also having anxiety, depression, and sleeping difficulties before each period. After taking pills over the years I welcomed one injection every three months and no periods. I lost weight, no skin issues, no emotional problems. But and this of a strong but, I have dents from the injections. Dents. The ones in my stomach went away, but it took a year. My upper thighs have an area where the muscle is missing. This has been this way since I've quit, it's been 7 years and still can't rebuild the muscle there. I have been off of the Provera for about 6 months and have been unable to lose any of the weight I gained and it is EXTREMELY frustrating! But, just because it didn't work for me doesn't it mean it won't be someone else's miracle drug. A blood clot broke off from her deep inner thigh and traveled up to her lungs and killed her in less than a few minutes. Then I realized that the only thing that could of caused it was the Depo. I did some backround investigating on this drug, and it's bad news. It should not be on the market. Please ladies, if your on it, get off of it. Anytime you alter hormones and hormone regulation, you can damg. your body bigtime. It takes your body a very long time to get back to homeostasis. I don't recall having many side effects in the beginning, but the last 2-3 years I started experiencing many side effects, which I believe to be caused by Depo Provera. They include: headaches (I seldom got headaches before the shot), dizziness on and off, bloating, stomach pain/worsening of acid reflux at times), nausea, sinus problems worsened, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, had one menstrual cycle since being on the shot, occasional leg calf pain, side pain, chest pains, body aches, hot flashes, mood swings, and heart palpitations. | The only thing I would say about Depo Provera is that it's not for everyone and I don't suggest it if having a child is in your near future. Speaking for myself, I've experienced many side effects recently, and I'm not taking any other medications on a regular basis. Also, it would be wise to get a bone density test done since there's a risk for osteoporosis after being on this medication for two years or more. It's more dangerous than you think. I was 17 and decided that I was ready to have unprotected sex with my boyfriend. I decided on the shot because I didn't want to have to worry about birth control everyday, and I was young so I wanted to hide it from my parents. This drug ruined my life. It took only that one shot and one day before it destroyed my body. I had my period everyday for 6 months and then it stopped for a year and a half. My periods started again and they have not been the same since before I had the shot. I am now in horrible pain when my period comes to the point I get physically sick and they last anywhere from 3-14 days. It has been 6 years since I took the shot and I still to this day struggle with health issues from it. I suffer from depression, horrible anxiety, panic attacks, cloudy mind, fatigue, tiredness, sore muscles, stomach issues, infertility and much more. Whether you are a college student, mother or a teenager in high school looking for a way to prevent getting pregnant, please please please consider your health and how important it is to understand what you are putting in your body. What you can potentially be putting at risk once you start this drug is immense. Don't let it ruin your life. I was moody, emotional, irrational and physically just felt unwell. So I decided to stop getting the shots and that's when I feel like everything really fell apart. I started reading up on it and found that others went through that as well, but I went to the doctor anyway. They just diagnosed me with anxiety and gave me Xanax. They wouldn't even consider the idea of it being from the depo shot. I kept feeling bad, so I kept going to the doctor. I saw different doctors and not one would consider the shot being a reason for my symptoms, but I was sure that was it. The doctors ran lots of tests and they all came back normal. They then diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, asthma, acid reflux and anxiety and put me on a bunch of medications. It's been over a year and I'm still dealing with issues and symptoms that occurred after getting the depo shot. Some days I literally feel like I'm dying. I was fine before all of this and I wish I could go back in time and not get the depo shot.
