5  Depression Slight insomnia I have been seeing Psychiatrists for 25 years. Bad reactions to every SSRI's and SNRI's I tried. Cymbalta gave me severe suicide thoughts, only time I have every had such thoughts. And the medical profession say MAOI's are dangerous and these drugs aren't? From my own research (search Dr Ken Gillman MAOI) I wanted to try MAOI's. Could not find a Psychiatrist to prescribe it, finally convinced one to give it a trial. It has changed my life, happy motivated, its a joy to be alive. I have slight insomnia, but it is a pleasure lying awake reading or having happy thoughts rather than dread and anxiety. The Pharmaceutical companies have a lot to answer for, they have spread misinformation about these drugs to sell their latest in patent drugs that don't work. M 62 3 months

4  Depression Some dizziness at first. Sexual side effect for about 10 hours after morning dose. The main MAOI drugs (Parnate & Nardil) for depression are the best antidepression meds on the market today. They get a very high rating because they work very well. Some people need a kicker ...so may need to another drug also. I had a debilitating depression for many years before Parnate. The schooling on these drugs are they have back side effect and you need a special diet. Its is blown out of proportion for a reason. These drugs were made in the 1950's and the pharm drug companies can not make any money on them now. Its a sin that relief is here but the docs are told not to use them. Find a dr that will. End the pain. good luck. M 65 7 years

5  Depression / anxiety Insomnia / Sleep disruption. Afternoon somnolence/fatigue. This is an absolute powerful antidepressant and anxiolytic drug. Here is the real deal: Annoying side effects Parnate = SSRI/SNRI (unfortunatly). Antidepressant/anxiolytic effects Parnate !> SSRI/SNRI. Take this if you have so called "TRD". M 33 8 years

5  Major depression and anxiety Insomnia, tiredness mid afternoon, restless legs. Parnate has absolutely changed my life. I've tried so many other medications and none of them helped. It gave me the confidence to have a child - something I put off because of my constant struggle to just get through the day. After seeking expert advice, I also breastfed. I now have a kind-hearted, happy, healthy and intelligent 3yo. I've also undergone 2 major surgeries while on parnate, with no interactions thanks to an amazing anaesthetist. The biggest issue I've had is when my prescribing GP moved away for a year - every other GP I saw wanted to take me off it because they had no experience with it. It's also been difficult to explain dietary requirements to others, even when staying at the hospital. F 39 5 years

5  Treatment resistant depression Insomnia. Very pronounced at first, gradually less so, but still an issue after 10 months. BUT: parnate is a miracle and I feel more human than ever after 58 years. Will work out insomnia. Depression: gone!! Issues with dietary restrictions are absolutely minimal here in 2020, mostly avoid lots of aged cheeses. M 58 11 months

5  Depression No side effects for me other then insomnia which I took medication for but now. The insomnia has gone and I sleep perfectly fine with no medication. Absolutely destroyed my depression when ssri and ssnri and tricyclics barley took the edge off it. No my invisible heavy black cloak is gone and I've got a spring in my step . Wasted 20 decades on useless medication. Don't make the same mistake as me if you are only partially okay then try Parnate or Nardil. M 42 1 years

5  Depression and Anxiety Very occasional dizziness due low blood pressure. Excellent drug. Have been dealing with my depression and anxiety for 24 years. Parnate has resulted in a major improvement in my mood and anxiety. In combination with two other drugs, my mood is now normal most of the time and has been so for over three years. The dietary restrictions associated with Parnate are very minor and I have found them no problem (although I had to change my choice of pizza). M 60 3 years

4  atypical depression Dizziness upon standing (my systolic blood pressure drops about 30-40 points). Constipation (canít go for over a week usually). Severe insomnia despite time of taking daily dose (I will take it at 5:30 am and still only sleep about 2 hours per night and be wide awake the rest). Extreme daytime sleepiness (in the middle of the afternoon, after my morning burst of energy wears off from taking the medicine, I feel almost narcoleptic, like I could fall asleep at any time.) Dry mouth is worse in the morning after taking dose but mints and gum help. I am a young adult and have tried at least 15 different antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti anxieties, and parnate has been a life changer. It is worth the side effects to me. I still eat fresh cheese (American and mozzarella) but stay away from cheddar completely. I do not drink beer or wine but do drink liquor and havenít had any issues. The only problem I had was when my psychiatrist prescribed trazodone to help with my insomnia, I developed serotonin syndrome and had to be hospitalized. He started me on a very low dose as a precaution and many other people take an MAOI and trazodone together with no issues, I was just sensitive. Now I take lunesta for sleep and it helps some nights but I still struggle with waking up very very early and never being able to fall back asleep. F 24 1 years

5  Depression with anxiety Some dizziness when looking up; urinary hesitation; periodic numbness and tingling;some ankle swelling; knee joint pain; feeling of being cold without being cold Brought complete relief from year long episode of numbing, horrible depression within 3 weeks of starting. Multiple other antidepressants were totally ineffective, as were 12 ketamine infusions. Ketamine did provide temporary relief but that faded with the last couple of treatments. I wish my doctor had tried parnate much sooner because it has brought about a total remission of symptoms and given me back a normal, positive life. Dietary restrictions are no big deal, although I did miss my sauerkraut at Thanksgiving! The episode of depression was about my tenth, first one in college, interrupting an otherwise happy, productive life. Strong genetic component in my episodes. Parnate rules! Any sufferer who hasn't done so needs to check out the inspiring work of Dr. Ken Gillman, a wonderful proponent of MAO inhibitors. It has been tremendously helpful. M 70 60 days

2  Severe Depression Dry mouth My experience with Parnate was "some" relief at first, which is probably when I wrote a previous review because even some relief was amazing to me since I have battled severe depression for many years(51) with no relief at all after trying so many, many meds. But it stopped working and even when I was taking up to 80 mg per day, I never got even "some" relief. So going higher would be futile. I have tried Parnate again since then, but still with no relief. I have now completed a little over 3 mos of elecroconsvulsive therapy treatments. And I have gone from living my life in mostly dark gray, with numerous suicide attempts, to days of more normality than I can ever remember. My father died a couple of weeks ago and I thought what I was feeling was "a different kind" of depression. I then realized that what I was feeling was not depression as I have suffered from it, but I was feeling normal grief and sadness. I have never been able to separate this before. I continue to receive the ECT treatments. I now have a wonderful psychiatrist (who also gives the treatments) and he did a cheek swab, which is a test for genetic markers. The results from the lab showed that I do not have the enzyme that metabolizes antidepressants. So I now take 15 mg of Deplin everyday, which is that enzyme. It is a B vitamin type that is crucial to be able to metabolize them. Had this test been available earlier, I think it's been available for about 3 F 62

5  Treatment-Resistant MDD Sleeplessness, slight jitters early on, both resolved after 3-4 weeks. Blood pressure decreased (this was a great plus!) If the impotent SSRI drugs aren't cutting it, do yourself the biggest favor possible, and try an MAOI like Parnate. Find a psychiatrist that has experience with them and therefore knows how straight-forward they are to use. Practically zero diet changes, just caution about a couple things. Contact me if you'd like regarding any questions/concerns. Parnate (Tranylcypromine) has given me my life back. M 43 4 months

5  Bipolar Depression Loss of appetite, irritability, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, anxiety This drug has saved my life. I have tried everything under the sun, this is amazing. The side effects suck but are manageable and well worth the outcome. For the first 3 weeks I felt like I was on speed, but that has subsided now. The diet is annoying and confusing as their seems to be so much different information. I have a home blood pressure machine now so that i can keep an eye on my blood pressure. F 31 3 months

5  Depression, anxiety. I just developed serious stomach issues. I think it's because I'm not rrally following the diet right. I've gotten all types of medical testing done. Blood work, ultrasound of my liver, and gallbladder. Endoscopy with biopsies. Catscan from a gastroenterologist. So far the blood work, ultrasound came out normal. I still get terrible stomach aches when I rat roughage. Salad, fruit, etc. I have to stick to this diet right to the t. If I don't take Parnate, I feel terrible. Yesterday, I didn't take any, and I felt soo panicky. I noticed immediately. This morning, I took my 20mg, and I'll take my 30mg in the afternoon and 20mg in the evening. For me, I would rather stop eating these forbidden foods, than suffer with panic, and depression. But, my stomach always hearts when I eat. Hopefully, I'll get to the bottom of this. No matter what, I will stay on Parnate. I don't care if I have to live on baby food. My mental health is detrimental to me. I'll keep plugging away until I find out what the hell is wrong with my stomach. In the interim, I'll stick to this diet. F 44 1 times
