OXYCONTIN  (OXYCODONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to help relieve severe ongoing pain (such as due to cancer). Oxycodone belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain. The higher strengths of this drug (more than 40 milligrams per tablet) should be used only if you have been regularly taking moderate to large amounts of an opioid pain medication. These strengths may cause overdose (even death) if taken by a person who has not been regularly taking opioids. Do not use the extended-release form of oxycodone to relieve pain that is mild or that will go away in a few days. This medication is not for occasional ("as needed") use.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Back,H&Nk, hip, pain chron, Fall Was put on a ridiculous dose IN 2011. was on 40 mg BID, new doctor had me on 80mg TID, with 30 mg QID break thru pain. Increased over 2 months from 40 mg, he kept saying "ur not Maxed out,", questioned him about addiction. Said " take as prescribed u wont get addicted only 5% do. I didn't he lost his license in 2015 selling 3 rx s to L.E. I was so stupid I trusted him so much, he was a Neurologist . 9 years ago, fell on ice backwars down into a sewer grate..+ LOC, headaches, perm. double vision, atrophy left forarm So new pain doctors said everything is changing, tapered me as follows: 60 mg OC BID x 2was, 5 mg oxy IR TIiD PRN,40mg x 2wk,30 then 20 mg bid,5mg of IR, present dose. Helps a great deal, it wont cover new pain, you have to wait till it subsides.feel more clear headed, no memory loss ( that I can think of 🤔 )", or constipation.. Yea! The shotty Docs brought it on themselves and so did the BS patients1q M 52 97 years

1  Chronic Pain When I first started taking it, it gave me horrible headaches but really helped with managing my pain. When my alarm clock went off if the morning to get up for work, I would have a pill sitting on my night stand and take it before getting out of bed. After about 30 minutes, I was not only pain free but had awesome euphoria! I was ready to tackle the day and simply put, felt great! About 2 years ago, my pain management doc lost his license to prescribe opiates. I went thru hell! I was suddenly cut completely off and unable to find another prescribing doc. I made it thru the withdrawals however and after about a week, I was doing ok but the pain came back with a vengeance! I UNFORTUNATELY found another pain management doc willing to prescribe and put me back on maintenance. I don't know if anyone else has experienced the same as myself but I would argue with anybody that within the past 2 years, they are simply not the same! The ingredients can't be the same as before and the color even changed. I am totally aware that you build up a tolerance to this devils pill but I also know the pharmaceutical companies have done something to change the effects of them.. I feel this medication has "taken my life" from me! I stay horribly depressed, constant panic attacks, no energy at all and zero motivation. I just want to stay in bed all the time but unable to rest! I feel that my body is shutting down and deteriorating very quickly. I could go on and on endlessly about this h REFUSE TO TAKE IT UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS AND ONLY FOR A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME! Doctors just don't tell you the road you're headed down!  1  ulnar nerve compression from burns Severe constipation, dry mouth leading to 7 cavities in front upper teeth and only had 4 cavities total prior in my 56 yrs alive. Tummy pain daily, takes 2+ hrs for any pain relief, yet stops working after 4hrs. Sweats, especially at night soaking pjs and dripping from hair (unsure if due to withdrawal as these occur 12 hrs after last daily dose). Have counted 11 pills in toilet, in their entirety, and could read OP on some of them. A few rats given these on a 2 week trial is not sufficient info to determine the safety of Oxy OPs. Anti-freeze and rubber are not meant for consumption, regardless of amount. The OC's worked miraculously great for pain and since I had been on them for only 2 mos., I didn't expect the withdrawals and horrible side-effects when switched to the reformulated OP version. The daily withdrawals in between dosages and no longer being able to have a bowel movement without using Fleet, and having your teeth rot is NOT worth the minute pain relief. I was on the OC version a couple months prior to reformulation. The OPs do NOT work a fraction as well as the OCs did. Never experienced euphoria, but am in deep depression and constant pain. Need to switch meds due to adverse side effects but am allergic to morphine and the Fentynal patches so am at a loss as to what to try next. I have empathy for addicts (especially their loved ones), however, it is UNFAIR that I'm paying the consequences for their choices and now my Dr is fearful of prescribing opiates and weaning me off these OPs with no idea what to replace them with. The fraud related to Purdue and some government officials around Oxycontin makes me fearful that we don't yet know the entirety of potential harm that this drug can do, but no doubt the makers are well aware, just as they knew that it was NOT a 12 hr analgesic, but 6 to 8 hours pain relief at best. When they can send men to the moon, seems ridiculous that there isn't an effective drug to provide complete pain relief or to cure cancers. There needs to be an option that prevents abuse, but allows the analgesics to be released from the Oxy. If you've not yet tried Oxycontin as of March 2017, DON'T start on it! F 56 6 years

4  Cancer, loss of limb due to cancer Good pain relief. I've been on many different pain killers due to 39 surgeries so I know pain pills. Good energy for me, no opioid constipation, however it's the one pain med that I can crave and get addicted to so my Dr and I switch up the pain meds when I feel I'm having trouble getting relief or that I'm craving it. As soon as I feel like I'm desiring it and not just for pain, I change medications. I've unfortunately been on some kind of pain med for decades and I've tried everything alternative to drugs as well. Oxy works but you better know your body and not get addicted to it. I'm always in pain, 24/7 but Oxy does help a lot. Just be careful with this drug. It's a wonderful drug, yet it can kill you too. - M 54 5 years

4  broken leg resulting in amputation Constipation, itchy skin, tooth decay, weight gain, constantly tired sleep up to 2hrs per day, hot flushes, increased eczema, swollen leg & cellulitis, but no pain BONUS!! I was prescribed oxycontin & oxynorm for breakthrough pain relief after falling & shattering my ankle resulting in an external fixator & finally amputation, by the hospital pain clinic. I was unlucky enough to get compartment syndrome in my foot which caused horrific pain so was given oxycontin as morphine didn't work. I've now been taking oxycontin for over 10yrs, remarkably without realising the amount of side effects I've been living with until filling in this review, which has somewhat alarmed me. I will be contacting my doctor for a referral back to the pain clinic to seek other alternative treatments to manage my pain. In the last 6mths I've started to suffer more & more with phantom pain & sensation so need help with this also. Oxycontin has controlled my pain for the last 10yrs but sadly also my life to a degree, this I need to change. F 44 10 years

5  Cosmetic Procedure It is not intended as a maintenance medication for long term use. It is fine for a short stint of pain management, i.e., after a surgical intervention. Certainly if used conservatively it is a great help. Yes, there are side effects, for example pruritis (itching), dehydration, constipation but if you stay well hydrated all will be well. It is not perfect but it does work and is helpful in the immediate post operative period. It seems that there are more issues associated with long term use. I used it briefly to make the transition after the surgical intervention and then wean to ibuprofen. F 60 1 days
