1 | Prevent osteoporosis | My dad had his first infusion at the end of June. Within the first week he had severe bone pain to the point where he needed wheelchair assistance to get in to a doctor appt, whereas he could previously walk downtown. Within a month he had chills/hot, muscle weakness, difficulty standing and walking which got progressively worse and difficulty even walking within the home. Then blood pressure and heart rate issues began about 1-1/2 months after the infusion. After month 2 began to go to various doctors and hospital and despite high heart rate issues, the hospital noticing the myopathy in legs, and lung showing ground glass appearance, he was discharged and then went to more doctors and urgent care before finally being admitted to the hospital on 9/27. On 10/3 he was moved to ICU because of difficulty breathing, and intubated. Lungs were cleared with prone positioning, but heart rate, blood pressure dropping out, and 3 minor strokes that occurred most like as a result of the he | As with other patients, my dad was previously able to walk downtown, play music with a band, do yard work. While he had a stent put in over 10 years ago, he hadn't had any issues with his heart since then and in the hospital even a week before his death the cardiologist there was saying that the heart was fine. He had no kidney issues before then either. And while he took some blood pressure medicine to offset a small increase that resulted from prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis, it was fine and controlled until the Reclast infusion. Considering the recent study that said bisphosphonates can “activate an inflammatory cascade and alter the expression of proteins that handle intracellular calcium” and increased arrhythmia risk, combined with the many that have had issues, this medication should only be used by someone with severe and numerous bone breaks that justify the extreme risk. I can find references to intracellular calcium issues for everything from myopathy to neurogenic shock, so the FDA should further investigate whether this drug and other biphosphonates are not only causing severe side effects like atrial fibrillation and renal failure, but a whole host of issues that doctors don't recognize as a known side effect. | M | 74 | 1 times 1X D | 12/2/2013 | |
