4 | myasthenia gravis | At the beginning cramps, loose bowels, but then it got better if I take it with food. Muscle twitches, including eyes. | It is difficult to distinguish between MG symptoms and side effects. But it definitively has helped my blurred, double vision. Also, I seem to have less muscle strain in my neck, since I have less pain in the afternoon. | 44 | 2 months | 3/28/2008 | 3 | Orthostatic Hypotension | Very fast Weight and fluid gain, severe colic and nausea. I have literally gained kilos!! It began in my stomach and legs and is also very much fluid. I eat well, exercise every day. Walk 4kms daily so this weight gain is drug related. Only other drug I'm taking is Motillium for nausea and paracetamol. | It helps my OH but my muscles waste just the same I don't have MG, only OH and EDS. The weight gain has made me very very depressed. I don't even want to leave my home. I think I will be coming off or though nervous about that as I think my symptoms may come back :(((( Feel trapped by this illness!! | 60 | 6 weeks Half a tab 1X day | 1/30/2021 | 5 | Myasthenia gravis | As long as I take 1/2 tablets (30mg) no more than 6xs per day (Total 180mg) as needed I have very few side effects. Its interesting that most side effects that I see reported on here are actually many of my MG symptoms that Mestinon actual gets rid of vs causes. I must be super lucky... | Works best on my breathing, diplopia and swallowing. No more hacking mucous and clearing my throat upon laying down at night with 30mg prior to bedtime. Leg & arm weakness still occurs, but less. My fatigue is unpredictable vs constant. | F | 47 | 30 days 60mg 1/2 t 6X day | 2/15/2022 | 5 | Sjogren's dysauronomia | A couple mild brief foot cramps at night. More saliva. I've gained 3.5 lbs in 6 wks. A tad harder to initiate urinary stream, but stronger bladder once stream starts. Occasionally little patches of itchy skin which may or may not be related. | Iife changing really. More energy, heat tolerance, less gastroparesis & constipation. Increased emotional reserve is mind boggling. Too much fight & flight & not enough rest and digest nervous system left me experiencing a "bad" thing as a "tragedy." Such a relief to feel more like I did years ago. Physically & emotionally I cope better on mestinon. I see there is research to support this | F | 58 | 6 weeks 30mg 5X day | 9/30/2022 | 5 | myastinia gravis | abdominal cramps and diarreah that stopped about 4 months after starting the drug | the drug caused me to be symptom free and live a normal life for 4 years until i missed 2 6omg doses in a row. Symptoms returned with a vengeance, worse than ever. Doc says it will be about a week before symptoms are under control again. | F | 41 | 4 days | 11/20/2008 | 5 | Myasthenia Gravis | abdominal cramps | I have been taking Mestinon for almost a year now after being diagnosed with MG. It has helped greatly with increasing my strength. Before starting this medication, I was very weak. I didnt have enough strength to walk, comb my hair (as my arms were weak) or do any normal everyday activities. Mestinon has allowed me to live my life, full strength. | F | 27 | 1 years | 10/23/2008 | 5 | myasthenia gravis | Stomach ache if taken without food | LOVED this medicine! I took it for about 6 years until I went into remission. It made me able to live the life I wanted to. Not exhausted and weak. | F | 30 | 6 years | 9/29/2004 | 5 | Ocular MG | No side effects whatsoever. None. zero. Eye symptoms improved significantly, almost 100% again. | If I haven't had any side effects so far does that mean I likely never will or have I just been lucky so far? | F | 49 | 7 days 30 3X day | 2/19/2014 | 5 | Myasthenia Gravis | Some muscle cramps (feet and toes) and occasional diarrhea (if taken on empty stomach). | Love this medicine in both generic tablets and Timespan caplets! (Taken in addition to IVIG, prednisone, and imuran) Could not function without it! | F | 52 | 10 months 90mg 4-5x/ | 7/23/2016 | 5 | neurocardiogenic syncope | abdominal cramps, face muscle twitching, diarrhea, gas, frequent urination | This was the last resort medicine for my condition (off-label use), so thank goodness it worked, but the side effects are sometimes really annoying. I've gained weight on it because I found that the best fix for the cramping and twitching is to eat, and carbs/protein work better than fruit or veggies. Luckily I take the ER version, so the worst of the side effects happen once a day, and as long as I catch it in time with a snack, it's ok. The frequent bathroom breaks have become a problem, but it's usually manageable. Wearing "light days" panty liners helps in case of accidents. Sometimes I sigh for the old days when I didn't check for a bathroom everywhere I go... | F | 42 | 3 years 905mg 1X day | 6/30/2017 | 5 | Myasthenia Gravis | Some runny nose, occasionally watery eyes. Occasional upset stomach. Mestinon seems to stop working or works minimally when combined with cannabis. | This medication was and still is life changing for me. And my right eye no longer droops. | F | 48 | 2 months 60 MG | 4/19/2020 | 5 | Myasthenia Gravis | Double Vision, weak arm & legs, laboured breathing, dizziness, very tired even after a night sleep.Cannot walk far, round a SMALL supermarket exhausting. | Having been in remission for about 15 years. MG is now back, I was very lucky and was diagnosed early in 1962 because my optician's cousin, was head of Neurology in Manchester UK. Mestinon was prescibed. I am now back on it & having all the usual cramps, so I am taking a anti-spasam tablet which helps enormously. After reading some of notes, I am SO lucky to live in the UK and have an almost free good National Health Service. | F | 62 | 40 years 480mg 8X day | 3/14/2010 | 5 | MG | occasional muscle cramps in legs and feet; loose bowels occasionally; have to pee 20-30 minutes after taking meds; muscle twitching if take too much (doses too close together) | still nothing better for my MG....have had MG since I was 12 and been on Mestinon since then. I still have trouble with double vision even following surgery to help increase the strengh of the eye muscles. however the doctor wants to redo the right eye. maybe my double vision has hope. | F | 60 | 3 months 60 mg 4X day | 6/17/2010 | 5 | MG | Excessive salivation and diarrhea when starting drug, muscle spasms in feet and occasionaly experience muscle twitching | Started 5 years ago when in ICU with MG crisis, intially 4 x60mg now it's 3x60mg along with immunosuppressive drug daily. It gives me the worst gas known to man! It is just annoying more than anything. | I was diagnosed with sero-negative MG. I primarily have trouble breathing, swallowing, and chewing, but occasionally, my arm or leg muscles will get weak, too. When I first started this medicine, I was astonished at how quickly I noticed a difference! It has truly made a difference in my life. I almost feel normal, and only occasionally have a bout of weakness. | F | 28 | 1 months 60mg 4X day | 12/4/2010 | 5 | myasthia gravis | stomach cramps fatigue water eyes diarrhea gas | it has help me a lot because i couldn't walk, talk, see,or breath i was in icu for 1 month. i was treat by 3 hospital. i was on life support.they had to bring me back 3 times i have been through a lot since november 15 2009. i was a single mother with 5 children now i am married. jerome has been by my side since day 1 and i love him with all my heart .i am still having a hard time but i am dealing with it,thank for the mestion | F | 38 | 1 years 90mg 6X day | 1/21/2011 | 5 | Autonomic | Mild twitching if use cooling vest or forget I took it some hours before. | Great medication. After over 20 years of undiagnosed belching, esophageal spasms, and choking, I began to lose control of my constantly twitching tongue, which caused slurred speech. A neurologist suggested we try mestinon to rule out mg. Blood work was negative for mg, but mestinon has saved the day. | F | 45 | 1 years 60 mg 3X day | 6/24/2012 |
MESTINON (PYRIDOSTIGMINE BROMIDE): Pyridostigmine is used to improve muscle strength in patients with a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). It works by preventing the breakdown of a certain natural substance (acetylcholine) in your body. Acetylcholine is needed for normal muscle function. (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
