LABETALOL HCL  (LABETALOL HYDROCHLORIDE):  Labetalol is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication is both an alpha blocker and beta blocker. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-08-03 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Neurocardiogenic Syncope None I was switched from metoprolol to labetalol when I became pregnant. I have no complaints so far. Metoprolol worked great for me, as far as keeping my fainting at bay, but it made me so tired. I felt a huge energy increase when I started labetalol. I haven't experienced any fainting with it so far. F 29 5 months

4  High Blood Pressure The first few weeks or so, I was extremely tired. I adjusted to the medication though & never experienced any side effects after that point. This drug is extremely safe to take during pregnancies and while breastfeeding. I have been taking since I was 29 due to HBP. It ran in my family & other lifestyle changes did not help reduce my blood pressure (low salt diet, exercise, diet, etc.). F 40 11 years

4  High blood pressure Tinnitus was the first side effect, which eased off after a few weeks, lack of ambition and energy, but the worst was the extreme vivid dreaming and night terrors. Every single night, especially after the doctor increased the dose to 200 mg twice per day. I did notice a weight gain of about 3 pounds within a few weeks too. Over all, I found this medication to be the best one I've used. Once you get accustomed to it, you feel almost normal. Unfortunately, at the three month mark, suddenly one evening I developed irregular heartbeats, out of the blue, at first for a few hours, then it became daily. I stopped taking it, which I found you aren't supposed to do. I took a different medication, an ACE inhibitor instead. The second day, I thought I was going to have to go to the ER, my heart became so irregular. I then took half a dose of Labetolol and within one hour, the heart began to beat normally. Do NOT just stop taking it, even if you are taking another BP medication in its place, you have to cross them over. I would give this a try, it doesn't have that many side effects compared to other BP medications. BUT the nightmares are the biggest drawback. You feel relaxed on this drug too. F 70 3 months

3  High Blood pressure and heart rate Tingly scalp, itchy scalp, severe anxiety at night, shortness of breath at night, insomnia, and waking up not being able to breathe. I also get swollen feet occasionally. Left upper shoulder pain. I don't see my doctor for another month. It does lower my BP. I was hitting in the 150/85 everyday. This lowers it to around 117/77 or 130/70. I'm going to push through the month to see if the side effects disappear. F 30 6 days

3  preeclampsia headache, chest tightening, insomnia, constipation, difficulty urinating, anxiety This medication helped lower my BP, but every time it wore off I would feel my heart racing, shakiness, some breathlessness, congestion, heart palpitations and anxiety. I've been off of it for a week now and for the first few days experienced extreme weakness and now severe insomnia plus anxiety. I've read that withdrawal from beta-blockers can cause feelings of weakness because your heart has to work harder once off of them, and your adrenals will flood your body as well since they're suppressed while on them. I still feel a bit weak, with some shallow breathing and have loads of anxiety. F 36 6 weeks

3  hypertension Extreme tiredness, coughing, dry throat, stomach upset and frequently causing vomiting even with food or milk. Gained well over 20 pounds in 6 months, 15 more since then, even with the loss of appetite caused by med. It does work on my blood pressure so Dr refuses to take me off it. Last Dr I had refused too but they don't understand how horrible it makes me feel. So I guess since it lowered my BP I am forced to give it a 3 but if offered something else I would be first in line.
