However, two side effects of taking Benadryl regularly for this and, I suppose, other purposes: (i) forgetfulness and (ii) urinary problems. Forgetfulness is not serious and it goes away as the day wears on and, I imagine, the Benadryl leaves my system. Urinary problems are more problematic. Benadryl can enlarge the prostate temporarily, increasing the number of times a day a man has to urinate but, ironically, decreasing the output. When I'm on Benadryl, I need "to go" many more times a day than when I'm not on it. Although women don't have prostates, I believe they may experience similar urinary difficulties. I've taken Benadryl on/off regularly for 2-3 years to help promote sleep and can report both these side effects go away when I stop taking it. Benadryl can also cause mildly annoying dry nose and mouth but this is common with many anti-histamines. It was impossible for me to sleep during the day so I tried different sleeping medications. The ingredients varied but I noticed that one of the sleep medications had the same active ingredient as Benadryl so I thought I would try benadryl since it was the same but cheaper. This has worked great for me, the other medicines made it very hard to get out of bed and I felt drugged when I woke up. Benadryl I take 50mg about 2 hours before I want to sleep.
