5  Insomnia Fast acting, cheap, non-narcotic sleep aid. However, two side effects of taking Benadryl regularly for this and, I suppose, other purposes: (i) forgetfulness and (ii) urinary problems. Forgetfulness is not serious and it goes away as the day wears on and, I imagine, the Benadryl leaves my system. Urinary problems are more problematic. Benadryl can enlarge the prostate temporarily, increasing the number of times a day a man has to urinate but, ironically, decreasing the output. When I'm on Benadryl, I need "to go" many more times a day than when I'm not on it. Although women don't have prostates, I believe they may experience similar urinary difficulties. I've taken Benadryl on/off regularly for 2-3 years to help promote sleep and can report both these side effects go away when I stop taking it. Benadryl can also cause mildly annoying dry nose and mouth but this is common with many anti-histamines. But as a sleep aid, it works very well and isn't habit forming. M 2 years

4  Allergic reaction I have hives and have been taking benadryl for the itching. My doc said it was fine to take as much as needed. I have been taking 8 to 9 a day for 6 weeks and my stomach has been hurting non stop for 3 days. Not sure if benadryl can cause a stomach ulser but I stopped taking it yesterday just in case F 2 months

2  atopic dermatitis-infantile exczema Been suffering from exczema since 4 months of age. Dermatologist recommended Children's Benadryl liquid after discontinuing Atarax (also an antihistamine). Side effects were terrible. MY son has severe insomnia, is sluggish and extremely cranky, very lethargic and unresponsive, he refuses to eat and is like motionless. Will also discontinue use of Benadryl as it only seems to hamper his situation- will attempt to try natural alternatives ! Might be useful for some, but terrible for my son. It seems to have reacted in the opposite direction. M 1 1 months

1  Hives Night terrors that lasted almost 2 weeks My daughter had hives. The doctor said to give her benedryl and she told me how much to give her. She was given the doage and the hives went away. I believe that the dosage was more than was recommended on the label. She did not have the side effect of drowsiness nor hyperactivity. That night, the night terrors started. She was only two years old. The lasted for two weeks, nightly. I will NEVER give her that drug again. F 2 1 times

4  seasonal allergies Light depression My 2.5 year old daughter has horrible seasonal allergies, so several doctors at her pediatrician's office have recommended everything from Clariton to Zyrtec. These medicines caused a pretty disturbing behavioral reaction. Because of this, I no longer give her any of these drugs. Instead, I have opted to give her Bendadryl at night (per one Doctor's suggestion) to help her sleep when her allergies are at their worst. I combine this with a good, clean vaporizer or cold air humidifier (depending on the season) in her room. The sleep agent in Benadryl helps her sleep through some of the disruptive symptoms (especially coughing), and a good night's sleep seems to help her deal better with some of the allergy symptoms during the day. The only thing that needs to be watched is a mild form of depression/sadness if she takes Benadryl too many nights in a row. Because of this, I usually limit it to 4 nights in a row when her allergies are miserable. I take her off Benadryl for as long as possible unless absolutely needed. Overall, I am very pleased with Children's Benadryl. It has definitely helped my daughter! F 2.5 4 days

5  Insomnia Haven't detected any to date I decided to use Benedryl children's liquid formula to help with my son's insomnia at the suggestion of his day care provider. It works wonderfully, providing him with a timely good nights sleep. I mix it with flavored water about an hour or so before bed and bath. It's sort of routine now to serve it along with a portion of pretzel's to help induce his thirst and it works. He wakes up very alert and chipper. I'm extremely pleased with the results, although am cautioned as to what long term effects may prevail. M 4 6 months
