| 2 | UTI | Nausea and diarrhea; loss of appetite and energy | I was told by my PCP's nurse to "finish the course" of this drug but I can't and won't. I am trying to recover at home from a heart attack, then covid19 from a rehab facility, and this is too much. I always took it with a meal as the pharmacist said to and had no side effects. I think it's a good medicine. | My endodontist prescribed a strong antibiotic to treat a deep dental infection post root-canal. He suggested Clindomycin or Augmentin; I chose the latter. The 875 mg dose sounded high to me, and I feared I'd get intestinal problems or bad diarrhea as I've occasionally gotten from other antibiotics. I tolerate penicillin meds well, though I believe Ampicillin once gave me bad diarrhea. My internist suggested I also take a probiotic (Phillips Colon Health) to minimize intestinal sx & to continue it a week after finishing Augmentin. I haven't taken a probiotic before & accidentally bought Phillips Digestive Health chewables instead. I also bought Schiff's Digestive Health tabs which has different cultures. The first 2 days I took one of each of those. I disliked the mint taste of Phillips Digestive Health chewables & on the 3rd day found the recommended Phillips Colon Health so I took 1 capsule. Had a little stomach cramping that evening so decided not to take that again. I was unsure how to take a probiotic as I found conflicting info, such as: take it with a meal, take it far apart from the antibiotic or take it 2-3 hours after it etc. I decided to not take any more probiotics until I understood them better so I took the Augmentin the last 4 days w/o taking any probiotic & had no intestinal or other symptoms. I've finished the 7 days of Augmentin and feel it was an effective and problem-free antibiotic for me. I believe it interacts with some drugs I take for diabetes. May not be good for elderly patients. Loss of short term memory was worse side affect. Buzzing in ears was like swarming bees. I'd look at objects and not know what they were. Horrid experience. Patients should be cautioned not to sign legal documents while taking this drug IMHO.
