1 | Acne, Hirsutism | Panic attacks, heart palpitations, agitation, nervousness. | I was prescribed this medication for my acne and abnormal hair growth and I feel like this medication truly damaged my brain. I've been off of it for a year now and I finally feel like my mental health is returning to normal. I was having heart palpitations and panic attacks for the majority of my days (I lost 10lbs in two weeks because I couldn't eat due to the constant panicking) and I was afraid of everything. I seriously feel like this medication kicked me in my amygdala because I started to develop irrational fears and I was subjected to constant death anxiety. In all fairness, I'm usually a mildly anxious person to begin with, but this medication made me spiral out of control. After I finally put two and two together and quit taking the Spironolactone, I've been slowly but surely getting better since! | F | 29 | 1X day | 6/23/2023 | 1 | acne | I'm no longer taking this medication. Day 10 - manic behavior, left leg pain; Day 11 - left side body pain / muscle aches (arm/leg), depression, panic attacks, onset of herpes outbreak (previously dormant 3yrs+); Day 12-13 - severe depression, panic attacks, fatigue, extremely high levels of stress. Opted instead to go see a holistic esthetician who spent 2 hours with me looking at stress, diet, hair care and skin care products, habits, etc. Switched to a natural skin care routine focused on building back moisture in my skin barrier. Acne has resolved. Haven’t had a single panic attack since d/c spironolactone. | Discontinued use on Day 14. Anxiety/depression onset does not align with typical menstrual cycle and uncharacteristic of PMS symptoms. Panic attacks were debilitating requiring use of prescription anxiety medications to function. Drug interactions between spironolactone & anxiety medications increase dizziness and not recommended for sustained use. Safer to discontinue use of spironolactone. No benefit to acne (prescription reason) was seen in 2 weeks. Confronted my dermatologist about the side effects; she told me I was crazy. I never saw her again. | F | 32 | 100 1X day | 3/12/2024 Patient History | 5 | Ridiculously heavy menstrual bleedi | Dry mouth, tired, need lots of sleep, 8-9 hours. Sometimes I forget that I'm eating a lot of high potassium fruits in large quantities and I get really tired. | This drug is amazing!! I don't know how I have lived without it all those years prior to having an endocrinologist prescribe it in my late thirties.. DRINK LOTS OF WATER and even add a pinch of salt if you're starting to feel weak or extra sleepy. No weight gan, no weight loss. | F | 48 | 10 times 100 mg 1X day | 4/6/2017 | 1 | Hormonal acne | Awful medication. I was originally put on 100 mg a day which I think is incredibly high for moderate acne. I experienced the worst fatigue I've had in my entire life. It felt like I was constantly on Benadryl. I had extreme brain fog, memory problems, agitation and dizziness. I lowered my dose to 25 mg once a day and the side effects went away but now I'm feeling extremely tired and sick again and I don't know if it's from the meds or not. I want to get off this stuff so bad. Someone please help | F | 21 | 0 days 25 mg 1X day | 3/20/2023 | 1 | Hair loss | Horrible anxiety when am due for my next pill. Not out of concern of taking it! The anxiety is foreign to me. I think my body must be sensitive to it. When it wears off, the anxiety licks in. Would never recommend it to even a dog. My hair loss continued. Didn't do a darn thing but make me a nervous wreck! | F | 70 | 0 days 25mg 1X day | 8/10/2021 | 3 | Because of excessive facial hair growth | Irregular period and malasma | F | 30 | 1 days 50mg | 12/21/2014 | 1 | Acne | WHEN WILL MY BODY GO BACK TO NORMAL. I TOOK THIS DRUG FOR THREE WEEKS AND HAVE SAGGING FACIAL SKIN LOSS OF COLLAGEN NO SEX DRIVE AND PAINFUL BREASTS. BEEN OFF FOR 2 MONTHS NO CHANGE. | 1 days | 7/17/2015 | 1 | Acne | Panic attack 3 hours after taking it. It started as blurred vision, then compounded into a full-blown panic attack. The thing about panic attacks is that they exhibit a lot of the same symptoms as anaphylaxis, so that made my anxiety even worse. I almost went to the ER because I thought my throat was swelling shut. My chest and throat felt tight and my heart was pounding. The skin on my face got slightly red and hot. My hands and toes were tingling/numb. I burst into tears. It was an absolutely horrible experience and I would rather struggle with breakouts than freak outs. | I took it approximately 5 hours ago and I am feeling ok at the moment because I read so many of you experienced the same side effects. Thank you all for posting. | F | 31 | 1 days 50mg 1X day | 1/19/2021 | 1 | Hormonal Acne | Onset of full blown panic attacks within 30 min of taking the pill on day 1 of the prescription. Increased heart rate, increased respiratory rate, severe anxiety. I thought I was dying. | F | 28 | 1 days 50 1X day | 2/9/2021 | 1 | Acne | Bad diarrhea and sudden onset anxiety/panic with an elevated heart rate of 100bpm | Called my PCP who recommended I seek out emergency services to check my blood potassium levels. I decided to ride it out since I took such a low dose and felt the panic subside within the hour. This morning I experienced another rush of panic while driving which tempted me to seek out urgent care but I ultimately refrained. 24 hours have passed and the general feeling of unwellness has lifted now that the effects have dissipated. I wanted to give this medication a fair shot and continue taking it but after the second wave of anxiety I don’t believe it is right for me. I was prescribed 50mg to start by an online tele-dermatology website called Apostrophe. I decided to only take half of a pill (25mg) as a precautionary measure. I strongly advise anyone to start out small and see how your body reacts. It’s a good idea to have your blood potassium levels checked by your primary doctor before starting this, especially those who acquire it through online services such as Apostrophe. | F | 25 | 1 days 25 | 2/11/2020 | 3 | testerone-driven acne | slightly tender breasts, fewer chin/body hairs | small pimples disappeared, although still suffered from (less than before) cysts | F | 46 | 2 days | 1/27/2008 | 1 | Hypertension | I'm experiencing undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction. I started taking this drug and had episodes of shortness of breath, chest pressure and tingling in my left arm about a couple of hours after taking it. | F | 33 | 2 days | 4/25/2004 | 1 | Hormonal Acne | Hard to swallow/choking, sudden severe anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts, fatigue and difficulty sleeping through the night, thirst/dry mouth. | If I knew that this drug would give me crippling anxiety and depression I would have never considered it. Before I found out this was the cause I was a complete mess because I thought I was going crazy. I had an anxiety attack out of nowhere and spiralled in a matter of days. Its been less then a week and now I need to go to a therapist to deal with these side effects. Not to mention a few weeks earlier I was having alot of issues swallowing and almost choked which I think is the result of saliva loss. | F | 21 | 2 days 50MG | 10/15/2019 | 1 | Blood pressure, hyper aldosteronism | Anxiety, fogginess, vision cloudiness | F | 61 | 3 days 25mg | 10/5/2019 | 1 | Acne | Anxiety, depression, panic attacks | I suffer from severe anxiety and panic attacks and am on my mental health journey just as I am on my acne journey! This medication may help one but will completely ruin the other! I feel hopeless and worthless and like I don't want to leave my bed because I can't stop crying day 3 now. Then when you finally feel a little better the feelings creeps back up! I would way rather have acne for the rest of my life than be on this devil pill! Please reconsider taking this if you suffer the way I do! | F | 20 | 4 days 30 1X day | 1/19/2021 | 1 | Acne | Panic attack and general moodiness | This is probably the worst medication I ever been on. I have acne under my chin which I believed mostly due to masks. My dermatologist insisted I start spironolactone at 100mg/day since my acne didn't respond to 1 month of antibiotics use. It's easily one of the worst decisions I ever made. For the first time in my life I had a panic attack. I strongly believe it's correlated to this medication as I don't have a history of anxiety or panic attacks. I couldn't figure out why until I stumbled upon this forum. I experienced this at about 4 week mark. It's been a week since I'm off this, I still get anxiety and panicky feeling thinking about the panic attack. Please please be extremely careful, nothing is worth risking your mental health for. | F | 33 | 4 days 100mg 1X day | 8/8/2021 | 1 | Acne | Anxiety, panic attack, fainting, dizziness, slurred speech, headaches, loss of concentration, eyesight issues | This is the worst medication I have ever taken in my life! I only took it for 4 days before I collapsed at work, it's been 4 weeks since I stopped taking the meds and I have the worst anxiety and panic attacks constantly, before taking the meds I would have small episodes of anxiety but they would easily pass. I have been to my gp repeatedly to try and fix this but I don't know how. If anyone has any tips please get in touch. | F | 30 | 4 days 50mg 1X day | 1/26/2022 | 5 | Hormonal adult acne | Noticed slight increase in frequency of the need to urinate, but that is expected with a diuretic. | Within 5 days my adult acne has already dramatically improved. I am not taking this in conjunction with birth control, although I do have an IUD (Mirena). This is a miracle drug for women with hormonal acne! | F | 25 | 5 days 50 MG 1X day | 1/16/2011 | 4 | high testerone | none so far | im on 25mg going to go on 50mg. are u guys watching your potassium intake? shoudl i be concered with it , im afraid to eat a french fry! i get so worked up taking news meds, please help! | F | 29 | 5 days | 9/30/2007 | 3 | Acne | When I first started taking spironolactone I was given 50mg/day then went up to 100mg/day, then down to 75. Kept this dosage for a year or 2. Side effects were minimal, or not noticeable and the pros of clear skin far outweighed the bad. I generally had excess water weight and this helped that a lot. Was often thirsty and had dry skin but was so happy to finally have an acne free face, I wasn’t very concerned. 5 years later, now at only 25mg/day, I believe I have more anxiety and panic attacks than is normal. I’ve suffered from anxiety in the past but this is almost like I can’t slow down, and the mental fog is intense. For anyone considering taking this drug, if you have a healthy lifestyle (regular workout routine, minimal/no alcohol, healthy diet and outlook on life), I imagine this is a safe and wonderful drug to try. For all others, either get disciplined with a healthy routine or make sure to ween off of it eventually. Even at 25mg/day now I feel as though I could have undetectable kidney damage and anxiety/depression that isn’t worth the price of clear skin. Hoping my acne will stay minimal as I go off completely..but I advise everyone to really consider the trade off. | F | 35 | 5 days 25 per day | 11/8/2019 |
SPIRONOLACTONE (SPIRONOLACTONE): Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic). FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
