SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  PCOS, hirsutism Occasional dizziness and lightheadedness due to lowering of blood pressure. Cannot miss a dose or lower my dose because of edema reaction. I have been taking this drug for PCOS and excessive facial hair (chin) since 1994. I initially started out with 150mg a day, eventually to 200mg and finally at 250mg per day for about the last 10 years. After starting this medication and making diet and lifestyle changes I slowly lost 60 pounds. I have kept that weight off ever since. My periods continue to be irregular - sometimes they are frequent and then I won't have one for many months, so it didn't help much in that department. But I no longer get any menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding or PMS so that's a bonus. Periods are typically light and forgettable. The dark thick hairs that sprout on my chin reduced by about 75% on this medication and have stayed at that level. I still pluck a few hairs every day but it's manageable. Prior to starting this medication I would occasionally find random dark hairs in weird places like on my chest or shoulder. That stopped once I started taking this medication. A few times my doctor has suggested that I wean off of it, but every time I try to lower the dosage (even 25mg) I get severe edema in my feet and ankles. I can't imagine how long it would take to slowly ween off it or how my body would react. I continue to take spironolactone basically out of fear. I don't want to regain weight, return to horrible painful periods, or live with the excessive facial hair. F 45 21 years

4  PCOS, High Blood Pressure No real side effects. Seems to do the job. I've been taking this drug for about 20 years. It was prescribed for polycystic ovary syndrome and also for high blood pressure. It seems to do the job with no noticeable side effects. But I've been taking it so long with no more than three days off at a time that I probably would not notice side effects. F 51 20 years

5  to alleviate water retention none I love this little pill. I used to gain nearly 8 pounds of water during the week before my period, now for the most part that misery is gone...I take it only 10 days a month. F 39 10 years

2  Acne Anxiety, panic attacks, breast tenderness, increased urination, irregular periods and spotting, tiredness, decreased libido I started out with 50mg for the first 5 years and then it was upped it to 100mg. I had mild physical and mental health symptoms on 50mg but acne was not completely gone. Then they upped me to 100mg and my acne improved significantly, however at the huge expense of my mental health. I never experienced a panic attack until this medication and being upped to 100mg. I couldn't sleep, eat, travel or be a normal human being on this medication. I was so foggy, tired, and depressed. I didn't connect the mental health issues with the medication for a year and thought it was trauma related. However as soon as I stopped taking it, I have had no anxiety or panic attacks since now 10 months later. I am bummed that my dermatologist never talked through the possible mental issues that could occur when you take medications that adjust your hormones especially at higher doses. I finally feel like me again, like my personality has returned and this cloud fogging my brain has been removed. F 27 6 years

5  edima none that I know of great booster to lasix for respretory edema. Great for gut edima where lasix doesn't even touch. Reduce sodium is first solution, and diuretic as needed. Heart failure people should drop below 1000mg/d sodium if that's what it takes to survive. M 44 4 years

4  Pcos acne Weight gain (15lbs on a lifelong skinny frame) that cannot be lost on hips and thighs,I can starve myself for days and the weight wont come off. I was always very tiny before. In the beginning breast tenderness and lumpiness but that goes away quickly. Horrible short term memory loss to the point I forget common words (I was always eloquent before and spoke two languages) and where I put things constantly. I'm worse than a dementia patient and I cannot keep information in my mind. I'll have to finish a book in one day or I'll forget what I read the day before.... I lost muscle on my body that I cannot gain back despite rigorous excercise like figure skating and ballet, so even doing weighted squats I have a sagging butt that was always firm before. Seriously, you won't be able to gain even tiny muscles tone anywhere. I often feel like I'm going to faint but drinking loads of water and taking metformin has helped that side effect. I hate the bad side effects so much, the weight gain and F 30 4 years

1  Acne -pee often; mood swings; anxiety; depression; exhaustion; little to no sex drive (made sex painful); dry all over I began with 25mg once a day, increased it to 25mg twice a day, to 50 twice a day. When I was taking 100mg I experienced my worst side effects and lowered to 75mg a day. Even on Spiro my acne was inconsistent and I eventually realized it wasn't worth trying to have clear skin.  3  Cystic acne Didn't see results until after taking it for about 3 months. Skin cleared up dramatically, and less cystic acne. Hair looked healthier and shinier, nails looked better. Seemed to be working well for the first 2 years, but in the last year and a half I've noticed a lot more side effects. This includes fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, dizziness, loss of memory, frequent urination- even in the middle of the night, anxiety, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and depression. I'm considering weaning off of this medication but have concerns about the acne coming back. However, the side effects are getting worse that it outweighs the benefits of taking this drug. If the side effects continue or become worse, I am worried about the permanent damage it will have on my body long term. I still have occasional cystic acne when I am on it, just not as bad as it was before. F 42 3.5 years

5  Adult acne Breast tenderness and some breast swelling. Irregular periods, and lighter. No other side effects. This is a miracle drug. It is the only thing that has ever worked on my acne and extremely oily skin and scalp . My endocrinologist told me levels less than 200mg/day aren't effective F 46 3 years

5  Adult cystic acne Heart palpitations (mild). I'm now in peri-menopause and after being on spiro for years (with no weight gain) I've noticed low belly weight. My doc said because my hormones are naturally changing, I probably have estrogen dominance and spiro can contribute to that (blocks androgens which body can convert them to estrogen). So I started taking Indol-3-carbinol and the belly weight literally melted off. So I'd give caution to women who say spiro caused belly weight gain. Most likely it's your own body dealing with an already estrogen-heavy situation and when you add spiro it tips the scales into estrogen overload. This drug changed my face for the better. Wouldn't be without it. Drink plenty of water, excercise, get your blood tested once a year. F 48 3 years

5  pulminary edema boost for lasix none this is common booster to lasix to control fluid retension. It does a good job. Reduced salt is always better except food taste's horrible with no salt. For bad edema, I took lasix + K + spiro + 4oz H2O upon waking before shower and put off eating for a good amount of time. You get 2x the effect. This is only for max fluid reduction people. Salt is the enemy, fluids flushing reduces it, but it's better to not put it in. M 43 3 years

3  PCOS hair loss, hirsutism, acne dry skin, shrinking of my breasts, fatigue I take 200 mg a day, anything under 150 a day is useless just so you know. This drug is a miracle for my oily skin and excessive sweating. I have too much testosterone due to my PCOS and so I am experiencing hair loss, body hair growth, and acne. The Spiro has not helped fix my scalp hair, but I do notice a slight improvement in body hair. Skin is overly dry but it's a heck of a lot better than being a grease ball! The main reason why I am taking it is to try to grow my scalp hair back and to have normal body hair. I am about to switch to Flutamide to see if it will help in that department. F 27 3 years

3  Hormonal Acne Stubborn weight gain around lower belly and hips, brain fog, frequent urination, inability to lose weight, fatigue Spironolactone is great for hormonal acne. After three months my skin was perfect. However, over the years I have noticed slow weight gain concentrated around my hips and lower belly. My dermatologist assured me that this isn't a side effect, but I've read so many accounts online from women who have experienced this same stubborn weight gain. In addition to the weight, I just don't feel myself when I am taking this. I feel fatigue and brain fog, which seemed to only get worse as time went by. I stopped taking it a week ago and I already am feeling more like myself again. I am now attempting to manage my hormonal acne with diet. F 24 3 years

3  Acne Worked great for my acne. Side effects aren't great. Experienced exercise intolerance and can't run like I usually do. My heart rate skyrockets when I start exercising like I'm out of shape. In the last few years I've experienced anxiety which has gradually gotten worse. Extreme tightness in my chest. I get anxiety after exercise too. I thought it was just stress so tried Zoloft for a couple of months which made my anxiety worse. I finally wondered if it might be the spiro. Stopped taking it and anxiety is gone so far. Really bummed since it really helped my acne but not worse the anxiety. F 42 3 years

2  Pcos NO SEX DRIVE, dry skin, frequent urination, highly emotional This helped with body acne at first but going on three years of taking this and all I'm left with are weird side effects. I cry all the time (happy or sad), I'm dried out no matter how much water I drink (scalp, lips, body, etc.), I have this layer of fat I cannot get rid of no matter how much I run/exercise and I think that's likely due to the increased estrogen, and I've COMPLETELY lost my sex drive. Not worth all of that just to rid of what was normal acne. F 27 3 years

2  Acne Constantly reoccurring yeast and BV infections, depression, anxiety HORRIBLE. Sure, it cleared up my acne, but thats not all. This drug can cause something called hyperkalemia, and in doing so throw off your vaginal PH. This allows for infections to form such as yeast and BV, for three years I had them chronically and tried EVERYTHING to avoid them, never making the connection it was the Spironolactone because doctors said theres no listed side effects especially for yeast or BV. I eventually looked into it on my own and low and behold yes, it can cause infection. On top of that, I already suffered from depression and anxiety and had no idea to make the connection that this made it way more intense. Medicine will effect everyone differently, for me this was a horrible mistake. F 23 3 years
