SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Allergic asthma. Weight gain, mostly in tummy. Rash down below. I was using the blue inhaler three times a night and day, which was far too much. I hardly use it at all now. So I'm very grateful for my Symbicort. I think I don't need to worry about long term side effects at my age. Just glad it helps me feel so much better now. F 73 0 weeks

5  Asthma No side effects whatsoever. My asthma came back into my life last year; the past 3 months have been horrible. Inhalers/nebulizer would only last 2-hours. Allergist prescribed Symbicort 160/4.5 last month--and the asthma has disappeared! No side effects, either. I highly recommend this drug. M 60

5  To manage my asthma In spite of rinsing my mouth each time I use it my entire mouth is sore and my tongue Burns and the insides of my lips are sore and there is a yellow coating on the roof of my mouth and my throat and on the top of my tongue down the sides of it inside my cheeks and under my tongue. It's almost impossible to eat because I can't eat anything that does not hurt and I do have a strange taste in my mouth most of the day. I was taking dulera that did not work then I took Bria and it gave me a bad case of bronchitis and a severe cough and I have taken Advair in the past and cannot take it anymore. F 71 4 months

5  Asthma First day in and I am googling insomnia- which is going to be an issue in 2hrs as I have to go to work !! :-) however I can breathe much better, it's obviously got something that makes your heart tick like a knackered watch but I am thankful I can breathe. I would have used my preventive ventolin 7 times this evening, I haven't touched it! I will be reducing the amount I have tomorrow for sure! M 42 1 days

5  COPD, Pulm. Sarc., Bronchiectasis Since on Symbicort I've only experienced hoarseness. This is an extremely minor thing compared to not being able to breath properly. I was hesitant about starting this inhaler because of the black box warning. FYI...Uncontrolled asthma also increases your chances of death!!!! F 43 2 months

5  breathing well controlled hoarseness, bruising. Advair did not work well for me. I constantly had to run inhaler under water to get it unplugged. I was thrilled when my insurance switched me to Symbicort. I breathe better and use my rescue inhaler less often. I also use Synthroid for hypo, which I had previous to using any steroid inhaler. It has not affected my thyroid or dosage in the slightest. The benefits outweigh my side effects. F 44 2 years

5  moderate persistent asthma When I first started taking it, I experienced headaches and was extremely jittery for awhile after taking it. Those symptoms subsided with time. I do have a mild sore throat at times, voice hoarseness, and leg cramps. None of my side effects are severe. Symbicort has helped reduce my asthma symptoms significantly. I don't have to use my proventil inhaler as frequently. F 34 2 years
