SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  asthma Early on I felt dizzy and on edge. I didn't feel normal, so I stopped using it. But the drug works so well to control my asthma, that after two weeks I started back up again. I've always noticed an increase in mucus and post nasal drip for which I'm constantly clearing my throat, which is also raspy. I did develop a throat fungus which I had to take prescribed medication to get rid of. And then for the past six months I've noticed a sensation in my throat that I'm having problems swallowing and that food is getting stuck and a loss of cognitive function. I too feel like I'm addicted. Yes, it works for me, but I'm wondering at what cost. I don't feel like my self anymore. M 34 1.5 years

5  wheezing with mild asthma One thrush infection within a week after taking for the first time;cured with "swish & swallow" medication. Then after 1 year, severe upper respiratory infection, but may not be from this medication?? Doctor prescribed 2 puffs twice daily; I was able to titrate down to 1 puff once daily (before going to bed). Since I have gotten the upper respiratory infection, I stopped the Symbicort. So far (one week), the original symptoms (wheezing and mild asthma) have NOT recurred. M 68 365 days

5  Asthma None I'm not sure this is supposed to be a long-term treatment for Asthma, but my doctor says, 'as long as it keeps working - keep taking it' - and it's worked far better for me than any other maintenance spray, after 25+ years of taking medication for Asthma. I never even need an emergency inhaler any more. Again, I do worry about staying on it for too long, but so far - so good! M 35 4 years

5  Asthma Has helped enormously, no need for other treatments. I was reliant on inhalers for years but am not afraid to leave home without one now. No side affects so far, at the less risky times of an asthma attack I have been advised to reduce usage to once a day. M 52 3 months

5  Asthma First day in and I am googling insomnia- which is going to be an issue in 2hrs as I have to go to work !! :-) however I can breathe much better, it's obviously got something that makes your heart tick like a knackered watch but I am thankful I can breathe. I would have used my preventive ventolin 7 times this evening, I haven't touched it! I will be reducing the amount I have tomorrow for sure! M 42 1 days

5  Asthma No side effects whatsoever. My asthma came back into my life last year; the past 3 months have been horrible. Inhalers/nebulizer would only last 2-hours. Allergist prescribed Symbicort 160/4.5 last month--and the asthma has disappeared! No side effects, either. I highly recommend this drug. M 60

4  Allergies, Asthma Occasional fatigue. Some muscle soreness perhaps, but also on montelukast and a low dose of spiriva now. You must rinse well with warm water to avoid thrush issues/hoarseness. Been on Advair, then Dulera for a number of years. They are all pretty similar though Dulera worked better until caremark forced me off it or pay full retail. Was required to go on Symbicort as their covered alternative first. After going back and forth my symptoms got a bit worse and never have improved using either formulation. M 63 2 years

4  Mild COPD Has worked fine. Started gaining weight immediately and still gaining 9 years later. I'm about 35 pounds overweight. I'm sure there's other factors. I'm quite active though and tried diets and never lost a pound. My skin cuts very easily also which is annoying. Starting today I'm going to cut my dose in half then stop completely for a few months and see if there's a difference. M 59 9 years

4  Late onset asthma The first two weeks I used it as prescribed, to puffs twice per day. My eye pressure and higher blood pressure became quite noticeable during that period, so I tapered off to once a day, then once every other day, once every three days and so on. Now I use it about once a week, or week-and-a-half. I basically wait until my coughing becomes apparent, then use it once (one puff) then not again until I start coughing, usually a week or more later. After tapering off (not by a doctor's recommendation, btw) as I self-monitored my symptoms and side-effects, it works great, and I have been able to achieve a balance of breathing with low side-effects. I'm down to one puff every week or so, with not much in the way of noticeable side-effects. A little eye pressure here and there, blood pressure a little on the high side, but that's also hereditary. Diet and exercise help with that. M 40 1 years
