SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  COPD Symbicort worked fine for my COPD BUT, I now have blurred eye vision, high blood pressure and respiratory problems and a hard hacking cough. Three ophthalmic physicians/surgeons, an optometrist and the Symbicort (Astro Zeneca company) do not know what to do about the blurred vision. As a avid reader and a writer I am very upset about this. I switched meds, joined a gym and my blood pressure is much lower. My respiratory problem goes on and on with no relief, the cough is most upsetting for others to hear. I will not be recommending Symbicort for to others to ask their doctor about anymore. I am reporting this to my health insurer and the health officials in my area. It is very expensive in Canada, more so with these problems F 77 8 years

1  Copd/Emph. Dizziness, nightmares, insomnia, nausea. Drug conflict with the Metoprolol I take for blood pressure - it increased the strength & I felt lightheaded for hours plus my upper left back bgan to ache continuously. Discontinued 28 hours ago & dizziness stopped but back pain the same. This has to be a bad drug for all organs of the body. I have been on Spiriva for four years & & never had these problems! I was instructed to inhale 2 puffs 2x a day. F 75 7 days

1  Adult onset asthma Taking 2 puffs 2x daily..severe hair loss, nightmares, muscle & joint pain, wt.gain but appetite loss, blurred vision, puffy eyes, swollen fingers, abdominal pain, nausea, thick mucus, hoarse. Began combined with Prevacid, Allegra and Flonase...all daily...side effects disabling to point of feeling need for crutches or Walker. Physician does not acknowledge extensive side effects but did order creatinine and bun tests which assess liver and kidney function..Now using saline nasal mist as needed, Prevacid as needed ...dietary acid control, Allegra only on day of weekly allergy shots...(indefinite). Tried gradual scale back of Symbicort - very very gradual...symptoms disappeared ! Negative = need some form of weight, personal profile related dosage rather than one size fits all...Near total withdrawal brings on expected withdrawal effects. Physician will not acknowledge possible steroid addiction...notes that steroid content is so minimal as to present no problems. Searching further for additional help with breathing. Considering ASHMI(anti-asthma herbal medication intervention) but only under strict supervision of Chinese herbalist.."July 2007 issue of Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology"...3 herb combo said to reduce lung inflammation & mucus in late onset asthma without lowering suppressing body's cortisol output as steroids do. ...actually raises endogenous cortisol production ! No overall adverse effects on adrenal function reported. Record of su F 75 1 years

Pain in wrist joints/cramps in legs Fluid under eye/Blurred vision/bad nighttime sinusitis Vomiting/palpitations I had no idea that my inhaler could be causing such a range of disparate and debilitating symptoms.  5  Allergic asthma. Weight gain, mostly in tummy. Rash down below. I was using the blue inhaler three times a night and day, which was far too much. I hardly use it at all now. So I'm very grateful for my Symbicort. I think I don't need to worry about long term side effects at my age. Just glad it helps me feel so much better now. F 73 0 weeks

2  bronchitis, and uncontrolled cough Retention of fluids, bloating, loss of appetite, swollen nasal passages. I felt as if I had a sinus infection, which I did not have when I started to use it. Scratchy throat and awakening at night to cough for two hours with little production, as a result. Wheezing at night, not during the day, although using it in the morning, and prior to bed. Not to mention the price if I had to use it for weeks or more. I am trying to stop using it after three days of it. I don't have asthma, so, I am not sure why I am using it at all. F 72 3 days
