NUVIGIL  (ARMODAFINIL):  Armodafinil reduces extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, such as periods of stopped breathing during sleep (obstructive sleep apnea). It is also used to help you stay awake during work hours if you have a work schedule that keeps you from having a normal sleep routine (shift work sleep disorder). This medication does not cure these sleep disorders and may not get rid of all your sleepiness. Armodafinil does not take the place of getting enough sleep. It should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder. It is not known how armodafinil works to keep you awake. It is thought to work by affecting certain substances in the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-06-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Cognitive exhaustion/mTBI Drug caused thought loops so quit taking after two months . With drawl symptoms began in five days. TMJ syndrome and fibromyalgia like pain. Increased over a three-week period to the point it was medically dangerous. Back on the drugs, and my doctor won’t give me any guidance on withdrawal. He says it’s three days. I take no other drugs, vitamins, or supplements. I have no chronic conditions other than post concussion syndrome. Athlete. Healthy as a horse. M 64 65 days

1  Narcolepsy Nausea, intestinal upset, headaches, double-vision, red eyes, shooting pains in eyes, mental fog and confusion, lethargy, mild anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, tight chest and constantly holding my breath. After taking Adderalll for almost 18 years, a move necessitated new doctors and their fear of the DEA trumped my continuity of care, so my new PCP refused to write my usual Rx and insisted I see a so-called "sleep specialist" as if I hadn't already been diagnosed and treated for the last 18 years. The sleep specialist also fears the DEA so he insisted I take Nuvigil instead. I've been sick ever since, to the point I can't drive or get chores done, pretty much making me a housebound invalid! I was functioning fine on the Adderall for almost two decades, but now I'm a mess. I hate this medication. I tried The generic version (the name starts with an M) first, and it made me very sick right away. The Nuvigil was smoother and took longer to for all the negative symptoms to kick into gear, but once they did, I've steadily grown worse so I'm as sick on it as I was on the generic version.  1  extreme tiredness related to sleep Heart racing. Nausea. Couldnt quit talking. Exhausted but stayed awake for 27 hours. Felt like buzzing in my brain.....and several more symptoms. My judgement and reasoning were sluggish and impaired. I wondered if I was dying I felt so bad. I wouldn.t recommend this med for anyone...however for anyone who still wants to try it I would suggest starting at a very low dose and gradually titrating up. F 55 1 days

1  Narcolepsy Bad rash, blisters, dry mouth, sores in mouth, swelling in throat, irritability, anger, depression, pain in my feet, stomach issues, I have been taking this drug for four years. It worked great in the first two. I always had dry mouth and darker urine. My doctor never showed concern over this. Over the past two years I've gone through a bunch of puzzling issues only to learn now what was the cause. I could not afford the medicine that last year or so. The result was taking less only when I felt extremely tired. I started getting bad blisters all over and itching.now that I know why, I haven't a clue what to do. I told my doctor and all she wanted was to run more sleep disorder tests. 46 1 days

1  wife takes it My wife was prescribed this back in 2008 to counteract the daytime sleepiness from a opiate needed for lifelong, chronic pain from a genetic disease. It immediately changed her personality. She saw everything negatively, and blamed me for anything she did not like -- which was suddenly EVERYTHING. She opened secret bank accounts, became VERY EMOTIONALLY ABUSIVE, etc., etc. The "doctor" who prescribed it (a NEW Dr., as per pain Dr. did not want to prescribe psychiatric drugs for any length of time) would not act on my information, as required by NYS law -- he even called me back (against the law!) to say "If you call me any more I may have to tell your wife." (HE WAS REQUIRED BY LAW TO TELL HER -- AND TO ACT ON IT. HE DID NEITHER!!!!) Things only got worse. Staying up till 4 AM, taking Ambien to sleep at 4AM and setting alarm for 7AM then driving -- 3 to 4 days a week. Then falling asleep at the wheel, even with the Nuvigil. Memory distortions and inability to remem DOCTORS SHOULD CONSULT FAMILIES BEFORE PRESCRIBING THIS, ESPECIALLY WHEN OTHER PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS ARE BEING USED OR MIGHT BE USED.  1  Hypersomnolence Wow, after reading all the reviews, basically 80-90% of us are experiencing the same S/E. For me headache, tinnitus, complete loss of appetite, muscle soreness in neck area, sinusitis, allergies, hay fever, really really bad nausea, brain fog and tension. I had used modafinil with relatively good results, but was forced to use this drug as a replacement. This drug is a nightmare; really no good effects and if you read the majority of the reviews you will see so much similarities in their negative experiences. It leaves you in the majority of the day with this tenseness, head-achy, nauseous feeling that is just unpleasant. Not smooth at all. I am so glad I came to this site and read all the reviews, as now I realize that I am apart of the majority and it is actually the drug. M 28 7 days

1  Hypersomnia nausea, no appetite, headache, jaw clenching, dizziness, jittery, dry mouth, sweating, body aches, insomnia I will preface this by saying that I am very sensitive to drugs and have had very similar side effects from anti depressants. I took 1 pill (150mg). That was yesterday morning. Tonight, I am still suffering the side effects. First of all, I didn't feel any increase in energy. I still felt very tired all day. The first noticeable side effect is no appetite, I mean NONE whatsoever. I literally ate nothing at all yesterday. I tried to eat a salad and couldn't do it. And if it weren't for the other side effects, I'd probably continue taking it for that alone. Next was nausea and dizziness. I am still super nauseous, almost 36 hours later. I was jittery and felt like my nerves were shot. My head was very cloudy. Several hours later the headache kicked in and jaw clenching. By night time, I was having obsessive and paranoid thoughts (minor but annoying). I was sweating. Dry mouth was noticeable but not a big deal, I drank a sweet tea and that was all I consumed the entire day. Basically I feel like I have the flu x 10. I went to bed 11 hours after taking it, feeling very tired. I literally laid in bed ALL NIGHT LONG, from 10pm to 9am. If I slept at all it was only a few short bursts after 6am. It was absolute torture. I was able to eat today but still no energy, very sick feeling, very nauseous, headache, and jaw clenching. Plus added body aches. I still feel like I have the flu and it has been almost 36 hours. F 32 1 days

1  Narcolepsy For the first day or two it went great i was awake than went to sleep at night; without passing out numerous times randomly during the day. Than this medcine started making me more depressed and it was as if i lost my memory. I ended up having to have a friend come take care of me. I was writing everything down trying not to forget what i did with stuff. It was the biggest mess i've been in. I've never been so depressed, i went to the hospital because i felt so crazy and off and the docters kept telling me that this drug has no side effect of memory loss. After talking to other people and reading results. It does. I also without some kidof medicationg to bring me off of the Nuvigil, i ended up staying awake more than i was sleeping. I quit taking it obv. now my memory is beack and after the medicine was fully out of my system i wasnt depressed. F 20 2 weeks

1  multiple sclerosis This drug does next to nothing for me. It doesn't help my fatigue and I feel a little buzzed on it. Provigil saved my life. It helped me get out of bed in the morning and kept me going most of the day. And I never, ever felt any buzz or anxiety on it. F 51 3 months

1  Narcolepsy chest pain, difficulty breathing, led to asthma attacks, racing pounding heart, alert and awake but body fatigue, soreness, tension in neck and base of head, headaches, 20pt increase in blood pressure diastolic and systolic, 20pt increase in resting heart rate. worst: 152/88 resting hr 88 (previous norm 110/68 hr 68), walking stairs could raise my heart rate to 140+ and cause severe heart pounding and lack of breath- I would have to sit and recover. I could not function beyond basic daily activities at best. I had taken Provigil for 4 years with great success, and decided to try Nuvigil since it was new and cheaper - potentially even more effective. The first month was ok - i was selling a house and moving - thought I was stressed. Second month on trip severe lung area chest pain - like pulled muscles under the rib cage. Third month I though I had an inflated balloon in my left lung cavity and could not breath. Never thought it could be the Nuvigil... after 6 months of unsuccessful asthma treatment, sinus surgery, and allergy treatment I decided to go back to the beginning and rule out any changes I had made beginning with Nuvigil. One day off Nuvigil, using Provigil most all breathing symptoms were eliminated. Three weeks after changing to Provigil I no longer fear I am dying - I can breath! My blood pressure is back to my usual 110/68 (from 152/88 worst) heart rate back to 68 (worst resting 88) and I no longer have to sit and recover after a flight of stairs. I will NEVER use Nuvigil again. F 30 8 months

1  Narcolepsy (mild) During the first month of taking this medicine, it seemed to be adequate to keep myself from falling asleep while at work. During the 5th week- I had an allergic reaction, causing a rash everywhere. I stopped taking the medicine, which coincidently I had a check-up the next day. A week after stopping this medicine, I was diagnosed with jaundice- it was 6 times the normal level. I had an ultrasound to make sure I didn't have a gall stone or a mass of some kind. The only thing the doctor could find was that my gallstone duct was inflamed. Both my normal doctor and my sleep doctor have concluded that Nuvigil had made my duct inflamed, causing it to make me have jaundice. I understand that everyone is different but I also think that this is something that people need to be aware of, and watch for symptoms like mine and make sure they see a doctor right away. before I had the allergic reaction followed by the jaundice, the drug worked "okay" not great. I was spacey a lot and I also had the normal headache the first week or so. I was also really thirsty. F 39 5 weeks
