NUVIGIL  (ARMODAFINIL):  Armodafinil reduces extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, such as periods of stopped breathing during sleep (obstructive sleep apnea). It is also used to help you stay awake during work hours if you have a work schedule that keeps you from having a normal sleep routine (shift work sleep disorder). This medication does not cure these sleep disorders and may not get rid of all your sleepiness. Armodafinil does not take the place of getting enough sleep. It should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder. It is not known how armodafinil works to keep you awake. It is thought to work by affecting certain substances in the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-06-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Incapacitating sleepiness Tearing in one eye (assume this is due to Nuvigil) I am writing for my husband who suffered a stroke last November. Other than partial paralysis, he has had unremitting sleepiness which, unfortunately, seems to be getting worse. He started taking 150 mg of Nuvigil a month or more ago. The first 2 or 3 days were awesome. He was much more awake and able to do things he hadn't been able to do for a long time. Then everything shut down again. He tried halving the dosage, taking it twice a day. Then, with a neurologist's approval, even doubled the dosage. He is now taking 250 mg once a day but has had no apparent relief. We are even wondering if Nuvigil is making his sleepiness worse. We will see a sleep specialist later this month to see if he has any insight into this. In the meantime, my husband, who has enough problems trying to recover from the paralysis, has no life because he sleeps all the time. We're very disappointed that the Nuvigil isn't helping at all.  5  MS Fatigue none I was diagnosed with MS about 1990. In January 1991, I had a relapse that included mind-numbing, body-stopping fatigue. I In 2010, I was given a month's free prescription of 150 mg Nuvigil. I was prescribed Provigil about 1997, and continued to take it through about 2005, although the effectiveness was negligible. I left my work on disability in 2003 . I was unemployable because of mind fog, inability to concentrate, organize or prioritize my work. Even with Provigil! I would fade, noticeably, between 1 pm & 2 pm. All I could do was go to bed. On Nuvigil, I lost the mind fog, could think, organize & evaluate my daily chores; in short, I felt almost as good as I was before 1991. I had the stamina to exercise 3 times a week, take up my participation in my church & choir, and lost the 50 pounds that I had gained over 10 or 12 years of hellish fatigue. In 2013, my insurance refused to cover Nuvigil any more -- only Provigil. I've been taking it even though it does no good. (just to prove a point and keep the insurance company from profiting by refusing - in spite of repeated appeals - to cover Nuvigil! I know that is spiteful, but I am very angry about anyone second-guessing my neurologist especially when I KNOW how effective it is for me.) I am in Purgatory without Nuvigil, I can't think, be active, be productive, or have anything like a normal life. The situation has put me in therapy for depression and in an effort to treat the depression F 70 3 years

3  Excessive sleepiness, sleep apnea Took 150 mg. initially and felt too hyper; decreased dose to 50 mg. which seems about right; feel alert and wakeful; only taking on an occasional basis, rather than daily; after taking two days in a row, I found the next two days (with no Nuvigil) I was extremely sleepy, more so than before taking the drug. I seem to have few side effects, but I have some concern about becoming habituated to Nuvigil and worry that I will want the 'high' of being more alert every day; also worried that there may be a rebound effect of excessive sleepiness on days that I do not take it.  3  sleep apnea; narcolepsy Nausea. Taking generic- Armodafinil. Several companies manufacture it but I am finding I have nausea problems with the Aurobindo manufacturer. Is anyone else having severe nausea with this manufacturer? I have felt better with other companies that manufacture it. I also had the same problem with lamotrigine from this manufacturer. Started using a different manufacturer and no problems. Other Aurobindo meds I have not had problems with. But definitely with those two. I find it extremely helpful for promoting wakefulness and focus. M 68 11 years

2  MS related fatigue Nausea, sleeplessness I began my Nuvigil at the full dose which was prescibed, but could not tolerate the jittery feeling, the nausea and difficulty sleeping. I tried cutting the pill in half. It still gives me nausea, but the jittery feeling is not present. Sleep is better. I am sensitive to medications and it is not unusual for me to do better at low doses. F 66 30 days

5  MS-related fatigue dry mouth, tight jaw, occasional trouble falling asleep I cut the 250 mg in half and take one as soon as I get up -- but only on days when I know I'll need energy or have a lot of things to do. I take it about one to three times per week. It really helps my stamina -- my muscles still get tired and my balance is off, but I don't have the feeling of increased gravity and soul-numbing fatigue that I usually get. I feel much more clear-headed, which I love, and just a tiny bit "jacked up," which I don't like but am willing to put up with for the good effects. F 65 30 days

4  daytime sleepiness Tension in tongue, neck and back; mild headaches; increasingly severe burning and tearing caused by dry eye syndrome, which nuvigil and provigil seem to aggravate extremely. Like provigil, nuvigil has been a life-changing drug for daytime sleepiness and inertia; it enables me to be more alert and productive morning, afternoon and evening. I don't use it very often to stay awake longer than usual, but I have more energy when I am awake. I take an antidepressant as well, and the nuvigil seems to make it more effective - definitely has a positive effect on mood. UNFORTUNATELY, I have had to reduce my usage to nearly zero because it causes burning, watery eyes that make me miserable, and it is clearly related to my dosage of Nuvigil. I take it in very small doses only every few days, but it's always a tradeoff with eye discomfort. Maybe the company can find a way to prevent this.... M 64 10 months

1  Cognitive exhaustion/mTBI Drug caused thought loops so quit taking after two months . With drawl symptoms began in five days. TMJ syndrome and fibromyalgia like pain. Increased over a three-week period to the point it was medically dangerous. Back on the drugs, and my doctor won’t give me any guidance on withdrawal. He says it’s three days. I take no other drugs, vitamins, or supplements. I have no chronic conditions other than post concussion syndrome. Athlete. Healthy as a horse. M 64 65 days

5  excessive daytime sleepiness, fatig tension in jaw and mouth; mild headache; dry eyes Nuvigil is a new, purer form of Provigil, available since June 2009. It's advertised as longer-lasting, stronger and having fewer side effects than Provigil, and after three weeks, I believe it. Provigil in the morning would wear off in the late afternoon or early evening; Nuvigil lasts several hours longer. And the feeling is "smoother" and "cleaner" as I describe it; fewer headaches, less nausea, still some jaw-clenching tension but not as bad. And I seem to feel better the next day - not so much need to take it daily. It comes in 50, 150 and 250 mg doses. I have been taking 150 mg or sometimes just half a pill. The company has raised the price of Provigil and made Nuvigil cheaper - for now: they want everyone to switch to Nuvigil because there will be generics for Provigil in a couple of years. It's a marketing ploy, but so far, it works for me. M 63 3 weeks

1  Narcolepsy Nausea, intestinal upset, headaches, double-vision, red eyes, shooting pains in eyes, mental fog and confusion, lethargy, mild anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, tight chest and constantly holding my breath. After taking Adderalll for almost 18 years, a move necessitated new doctors and their fear of the DEA trumped my continuity of care, so my new PCP refused to write my usual Rx and insisted I see a so-called "sleep specialist" as if I hadn't already been diagnosed and treated for the last 18 years. The sleep specialist also fears the DEA so he insisted I take Nuvigil instead. I've been sick ever since, to the point I can't drive or get chores done, pretty much making me a housebound invalid! I was functioning fine on the Adderall for almost two decades, but now I'm a mess. I hate this medication. I tried The generic version (the name starts with an M) first, and it made me very sick right away. The Nuvigil was smoother and took longer to for all the negative symptoms to kick into gear, but once they did, I've steadily grown worse so I'm as sick on it as I was on the generic version.  5  Obstructive sleep apnea Dry mouth, which is improving. This drug changed my life. I was sleeping 12 hours per day even though I used a C-pap. From the first day I have been alert and clear headed. I have also lost my appetite for sweets and have lost 12 pounds which is a good thing. I sleep soundly. I wonder if I was self medicating with sugar to increase my energy level? I have renewed interest I things I haven't done for a long time. I haven't felt this good in 30 years. F 59 1 months
