FOSAMAX PLUS D  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM; CHOLECALCIFEROL):  This medication is used to treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) and to increase bone mass. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This product is a combination of two medicines: alendronate and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Alendronate works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). It belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates. Vitamin D3 helps your body absorb calcium and is necessary for building healthy bones.   FDA Approval Date: 2007-04-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Upper torso pain starting from the base of my neck all the way down to my lumbar spine which became progressive with each passing dosage. It started with a little soreness and blossomed into consistent stabbing, throbbing pain. Sitting is uncomfortable and sleeping has been difficult as finding a position that doesn't cause pain isn't long-lasting. The pain is unbearable, it's even worse than the after-effects I had from strong dosing of chemotherapy. Along with the pain, I have been experiencing a lot of sweating, nausea, and my emotions are like a roller coaster. I developed bone loss from chemotherapy drugs and need to take a hormone blocker so I don't develop a recurrent breast cancer but the hormone blocker also robs my body from bone. I am seriously considering taking my chances by not taking another drug to help with the prevention of a fracture. I have a pending carpal tunnel surgery next week and spoke to my orthopedist about the drug and he thought Fosamax is out of my system as did a pharamacist friend. The health community needs to know about the dangers of this drug. F 61 3 weeks

1  Knee osteoarthritis I am 56 years old. I have knee osteoarthritis. Together with my first dose of Synavisc injection my doctor gave me Fosamax Plus. I was fine for the first 24 hours. When I woke up on the second day, I had severe squeezing chest pain. I could not lift my arms. I thought I was having a heart attack and rushed to the hospital. After ruling out heart attack, my doctor suspected esophagitis and treated me for that. After 4 hours there was a little relief but then in addition to the chest pain, I had severe pain in my rib cage and my thoracic back. Turning to the sides, lifting arms and walking were very painful. I was slouching my shoulders in pain. Now it is the third day. My pain has reduced but not fully gone. This pain gave me a “glimpse” of my thoracic skeletal structure!! I would never want to take this medicine again. It may be true that this drug may be good in certain conditions. However the patient must be fully informed of the consequences and be monitored closely by the Doctor if it is really required to be treated with this drug. As for me, never again! M 56 1 days

1  osteopenia / osteoporosis Jaw pain, fever, muscle aches Vitamin D, calcium and exercise will help you build bones, not this poison. Doctors just want to get women in the bone density test rat maze. These tests prove nothing. Don't be sucked in!! Doctors just want to make money and get kick backs from the drug companies. They know absolutely nothing about diet and nutrition. They are drug pushers!! F 53 1 days
