IMPLANON  (ETONOGESTREL):  This product is a small, thin plastic rod that is inserted under the skin to prevent pregnancy. The rod slowly releases etonogestrel into the body over a 3-year period. Etonogestrel is similar to a natural hormone made in your body. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. This product does not contain any estrogen. This medication may not work as well in women who are very overweight or those taking certain drugs. (See also Drug Interactions section.) Discuss your birth control options with your doctor. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2011-05-31 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Birthcontrol Acne, mood swings, long period at the start at first my experience was not too good. Bled for about 7 weeks and had mood swings/depression. And a little bit of acne that went away. Now I never get my period and I feel like I am happier for it, I will definitely be getting it again. It is not for everyone but works wonders for those it works well for. It's all about trying it for yourself to see how your body will react. F 21 2 years

5  Contraception, irregular periods Spotting, mild nausea I just thought I'd post my positive experience since people are more likely to leave a review when they've had a bad time. It's not for everyone, but I really like it. I went 4 months no period and had 10 days of spotting and cramping for my first "period" since getting it. No moodiness, no bleeding everywhere, it just works. F 20 5 months

5  for birth control I have had no weight gain not even the estimated 6 pounds which is surprising I'm over weight to begin with was very hungry all the tire for the first two weeks gave into the cravings but still no weight gain I was very moody after having my sin even three months after got the implanon and felt normal again. No loss of sex drive head aches nothing really bad to say except the occasional pain in my arm when I move it a certain that at but that went away about a month ago great birth control so far oh and no periods It's not for everyone and you can complain if you get side effects all birth controls have some sort of side effect so does all medicine. Talk to you doctor and see if its for you first and ask about the weight gain the moodiness and everything else before making the decision if you don't like it remove it simple as that but don't wait till things get bad.  5  prevention of pregnancy I have had very mild pregnancy symptoms. No weight gain. No period until today 12/30/14, but very small spotting. I took a few pregnancy tests through the year because I thought I was pregnant because of the symptoms. Turns out that is a side affect of the birth control. No biggie for me. I love implanon and will continue to get it because I do not want any more children. F 23 1 years

5  Birth control I had two different implanons over five years. The first six months was a bit crazy with a low moods and light frequent bleeds (though nothing like a period). I am glad that I stuck with it as for the rest of the time it has been wonderful. My moods have been very constant and upbeat, periods very infrequent and light, no period pain or back cramping, good sex drive. I am the biggest baby ever when it comes to needles and blood, however I found the insersion and removal procedures bareable and not a bit painful. As someone who previously used the pill for five years, I can fully recommend the implant and wouldn't hesitate to use it again after starting a family. The only minor side effect I have found with the implant is minor acne, however I am happy to live with this for the other benefits Implanon offers. F 28 5 years

5  Birth control I've had nexplanon for 4 weeks now and haven't had a period. I switch from the mini pill to nexplanon. So far I've experienced cramping as if I'm going to start my period but I never do. I've also had an increase in clear vaginal discharge. My partner and I hate using condoms so this bc is perfect for us. I am also extremely overweight but not sure if it's effected my chances of getting pregnant. I would definitely recommend trying it. Everyone's body is different. F 21 4 weeks

5  prevent pregnancy i have been really satisfied with the nexplanon. I had my period for about a month after i got it placed in my arm and then i didnt have another period until recently. But the last year and a half has been amazing. I have had my period for about 4 days, 3 different times this month, but from what i understand the estrogen is lowering and i am still protected from getting pregnant. Yes, it is very annoying but i would rather not have my period for a year and a half and just now start, i think i am going to get mine taken out and put right back in. Great BC! i recommend it.  5  Birth control and endometriosis I have had implanon for over 5 months. It was soo easy going in!! My doctor numbed me up, I heard a click, and didnt even feel it. For the first week after getting it, my hormones were JACKED UP!! I was soo emotional towards everything. Once the first week passed, I have been just fine ever since. It took me about 8 weeks to completley heal the incision site and bruising (the only real negative side effect I have truly felt with this birthcontrol.) My periods havent stopped completley, but they have definitly slowed dramatically. In the 5 months I have had it, I have only had 3 periods. Each one shorter in duration every time. I have noticed my sex drive isnt as strong as it used to be, but with a loving and understanding partner than there really isn't a problem... I have also been experiencing some itching at the site where the device is located. The whole thing itches at random times. After a run or when Im setting down for sleep...other than that, I highly suggest it as a birth control method for couples who dont like condoms, have trouble remembering to take your birth control, or even if female hormones arent good for you (they arent good for me since I have migranes.) Please also remember that this birth control method DOES NOT protect against Sexually Transmitted Diseases. F 21 5 months

5  Birth control It is mostly pain free getting it inserted. although I had a large bruise after it got inserted which took 2 weeks to dissapear. I had my period about a week after which lasted about 10 days but I havnt had any periods since which is great I reckon! I don't get any bad symptoms and I'm still losing my baby weight just fine! Love it! F 24 4 months

5  birth control, endo I have no complaints. I actually only got on here because before I got mine I read all the chaos on the internet. Just wanted to make it known that not everyone has a bad time or bleeds constantly. I haven't had a cramp or period in a year. Try it on your own. Don't base your choice on horror stories.  5  contraception Omg. I love love love the implant. After fighting with estrogen containing pills for years and actually conceiving both of my kids on them I finally found this! Depo was great too but I use to have an eating disorder and that makes bone loss issues more likely. Anyways.. I love nexplanon. Highly recommended!!!!!! Also to the person prior.. a few women with clotting disorders got blood clots. It is way less likely to get one with the implant in comparison to combined pills. F 29 4 years

5  for reliable contraception have had some long but light drawn out periods HUGE benefit in that it lightened my periods and made them predictable and a good deal less painful. Since getting the implant replaced 4 months ago I have only had one light period. Plus I have had three and half years (with the same partner) without worrying about condoms or pills. F 23 3.5 years

4  Birth control Nausea, headaches, and very mild cramping. I've only had the implant for a week but so far it's been good. I hate the nausea but it's not that severe or that often. The doctor told me not to carry anything over 10 pounds for a while and I wish I would've listened. Nothing happened except my arm felt VERY weak after carrying my 4 year old nephew. As far as the insertion process, it wasn't so bad. The numbing medication stung like a bee sort of. But after that you don't feel anything. Just some soreness after the numbing medication wears off. The doctor told me to leave the pressure bandage for at least 24hrs to avoid bruising and I did. But the bandaid they put underneath was so small that when I took off the pressure bandage the small bandaid was drenched in blood. I replaced it with one of the big band aids because the insertion site hadn't healed yet. I showered with it and everything. And then after the shower Id replace it again. I only did this twice because the band aids were causing terrible itching. It did hurt when I took it off because it was the one I put after my shower and it was still very sticky. But after reading about girls who got blisters around the area because of the band aids I decided to take it off. It didn't seem to do anything to the implant and the insertion site had already formed a scab so it seems okay. I like this bc so far no major problems :) F 20 1 weeks

4  I was in an active relationship For the first month I had about a 3 week long period. Then I got my period every 4 months for the first year, then one period the next year and this last year and a half I haven't had my period at all. Having the implant for 3 years has been a better form of contraceptive rather than the pill, which I tried before but started forgetting. The implant never made me gain weight. I believe having it from ages 16-19 has had a big impact on puberty and growth with natural hormones, meaning my body missed that time frame and didn't have any growth. I get it removed on Tuesday April 14th. F 19 3 years

4  prevent pregnancy Mood swings, irregular Periods, tender nipples, pregnancy like symptoms, bloating When I first got the implanon I would get my period constantly but less then a month in it stoped all together.I stoped having a period but I would get moody and most of the time angry for no reason. My nipples from time to time would be super sensitive and no matter how long I sleep im always tired and unmotivated to do anything,I gained about 20 pounds from the implanon.I am now 2 years and 7 months in.It is suppose to expire in 5 months.I am becoming very worried because I had got my period back these last 3 months. my last period lasted for a week (like it usually does) but a week later I started spotting blood. I read online once you get your period back that, thats when the implanon has officially worn off.I hope im not pregnate or miscarriaged. F 20 2 years
