BONIVA  (IBANDRONATE SODIUM):  Ibandronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis). Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases after menopause, as you age, or if you take corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for long periods. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Ibandronate belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-03-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Osteoporosis Took my first pill May 2020, approximately 24 hours later I developed flu like symptoms with fever, chills, joint pain especially in my back and severe back spasms and some nausea. Took tylenol, and used a heating pad. Lost a day of work because I was in bed-incapacitated. The next few days I had improvement and was back to normal a week later. I was hesitant to take the June pill, spoke to my doctor and pharmacist and they both encouraged me to try it one more time. I took it yesterday morning and no side effects yesterday or today. I will definitely try it next month and hope for the best. Osteoporosis is a bad diagnosis and I don't want to deal with a broken hip! I am using the generic form of Boniva. F 66 2 months

1  Osteopenia After reading comments, I now realize my pain is from this drug. Tooth pain but cannot pinpoint which tooth but cannot chew on right side with a poisonous taste in mouth. Horrendous neck and shoulder pain started a few days ago. Lower back pain which hurts to walk. Feel dizzy a lot and a general feeling of just not feeling well. I am going to stop taking this drug and see if I can get back to normal. F 62 11 days

1  Osteoporosis Flu like symptoms; extreme jaw pain; joint pain; fatigue;nausea I would never have taken this drug if I had known a side effect could be osteoporosis of the jaw if you had chemo or radiation treatments. I have had both. Seriously, how could a side effect be the very thing you are being treated for. I took the drug 10 days ago and I am still feeling the effects. I will never take this again. This drug is poison! F 70

1  mild osteoporosis in cervical spine Immediately after first dose, I experienced severe neck pain which lasted about 4 days. It also exacerbated by existing esophagitis. At day 10, acute, explosive diarrhea began and has not stopped as of this writing. I phoned the PA who prescribed and was told by some staffer to discontinue the medication. No advice was given on how to manage this diarrhea. Shocking to me. This drug is a disaster! The plethora of side effects totally outweigh the benefits in my view. Wake up physicians! F 72 16 days

2  Osteoporosis Insomnia, GERD, chills, pain in right foot and ankle. I can barely put my foot to the floor and crown fell out. Nose bleeds due to dryness. My doctor suggested this to me after I had adverse reactions to Prolia and Actonel. She thought that maybe this would suit me better as it was a monthly tablet. Its as bad as the other treatments!!! They are all the same with dreadful side effects which just can't be good for the body. There is something very toxic about all of these drugs, the cure is worse than the disease. I will finish with taking Boniva and hope that my body flushes it out and I have no lingering side effects. My doctor and Podiatrist are in agreement that my symptoms have nothing to do with taking Boniva that it is just age related wear and tear. I wish they would become guinea pigs for the drug and then maybe the drug companies would sit up and listen. I walked 3 miles a day before all this now I can't walk around the corner! F 50 6 months

4  low bone density I took this yesterday morning and for the first hour I had mild nausea, but once I could eat I felt fine. I've had no extra pain or discomfort. I realize it is still early, and my first dose, but all of the negative reviews had me really freaked out. I am hoping this will be the norm. M 49 1 months

1  Osteoporosis Within 24 hrs of taking Boniva I had extreme stomach pain - felt like I was being stabbed every 90 seconds. Heart palpitations, night sweats, vomiting, low blood pressure, dizziness , severe dehydration, severe constipation . Went to doctor the next day- had to have IV fluids. Had night s and constipation for the next 30 days. I am annoyed my doctor prescribed this disastrous medication. I refuse to take it again. Why is this on the market?! This is used in fertilizer and industrial applications- it is not for humans!! F 67 1 days

1  osteopenia to osteoporosis 8 hrs after taking first dose , I thought I was getting the flu... getting achy and nauseous. 10 hrs later, my ribs and back started hurting. I took Tylenol( can’t take Ibuprofen when using Boniva) and went to bed. Upon waking the next day, couldn’t believe back and sternal pain, easily 6/10 with medication. 3rd day, less pain in back, but now both knees are very uncomfortable. Still taking Tylenol. On 4th day, able to walk, but simple transfers are slow and painful. Over the years, my health has been blessed. I have been active and take no other medication. My sister and aunt took Boniva with no problems so I wasn’t too concerned even after reading possible side effects. This medication needs to be reconsidered by doctors. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find something else that works for me. F 59 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Initially I had nausea and headaches. Each month the symptoms got progressively worse, with additional side effects appearing. I had pain under my lower ribs, pain under my sternum, general aches and pain, and I had chills and a fever, as well as extreme fatigue. Truthfully, I felt awful. I was bed ridden for two days. I cannot put myself through this every month. I am done with Boniva. I will take calcium and vitamin D and continue to exercise and work out with weights. I’m lucky that I’m on so few medications. My initial gut instinct was to say NO to Boniva. The possible side effects terrified me. I should have gone with my first reaction. Every month when I took the pill I felt like I was poisoning myself. I don’t think we’ve heard the last of Boniva and all the awful side effects. There is more bad news to come, I’m sure. This drug is all about the pharmaceutical companies making money, not about helping people live with osteoporosis. F 65 5 months

No pain at the moment Sorry to go on about all this but needed to be said because they gave me a shot of Boniva last Friday and by Saturday I felt like I was being beat with a sledge hammer.  4  osteoporosis Very mild acid reflux, once or twice a day that goes away in minutes and responds immediately to TUMS. Other wise no side effects at all. I have not had problems with Boniva. Bone scan results after 1 year showed impressive improvement in my bone density. I am continuing to take it orally each month. Very satisfied. F 62 1 years

1  bone metastasis after breast cancer Following a tooth extraction in Dec'17 I began to feel sharp bone fragments coming out of the jaw in the area of the extraction. Then began having severe pain like an abscess. Dr said it was due to jaw necrosis due to Bonica. Yes, bone death or necrosis due to a drug that was supposed to help build or maintain bone density. Put on Clindamycin for months. Early on I had numerous bone fragments removed, the area was biopsied, scraped/debrided, and after 6 months was finally told the infection was finally over. Then the oral surgeon gave me an appointment for 3 months from then. When asked why, he said to make sure it doesn't recur. Was very disgusted to hear the infection has a tendency to recur. Seems a never ending problem. Will never take it again, and am telling all my family and friends to think twice and make sure they really NEED the drug and DO NOT TAKE IT PROPHYLACTICLY!!! Am now on increased doses of calcium w/ Vit D. As a nurse, I would say to stay away from any of the bone -building drugs as my doctor said they all can cause the same problem. Don't be afraid to tell your doctor NO!! Increase your calcium w/ Vit D intake instead. Am also wondering why there isn't a class action law suit due to the consequences of these drugs. F 80 3 years

1  Osteoporosis I took my first Boniva. I had the worst cough, hoarse voice, upper respiratory issues! I went into my doctor a week later and she gave me an inhaler, antibiotics, cough medicine, etc. I went back into the doctor a week later and she gave me a steroid inhaler, to try with the inhaler and more medicine. My voice was hoarse since then. The cough has been awful. I was diagnosed with bronchitis and pneumonia. I quit coughing about three weeks into this whole thing but my voice was still hoarse.. My doctor encouraged me to take one more dose and see how I did. After four weeks of coughing, my cough was a very low level, and then I took another pill, and the cough returned within two days and my voice is very hoarse! I have been sick since I started taking this, and that’s only after the second dose but I’ve been sick since the first day I took it! I am about one week in from taking my second dose. My husband said that’s my last dose! I ache all over I thought it was from coughing until I found this site and read these comments. My shoulder is killing me, my lower back is killing me! I thought it was from the coughing so much, now I kind of wonder! I am speaking this into my iPad, after using my inhaler and coughing through this writing here. I’m wondering if an infusion will just make me feel more rotten for six months? Curious if anybody experienced that? F 66 2 months
