LEXAPRO  (ESCITALOPRAM OXALATE):  Escitalopram is used to treat depression and anxiety. It works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain. Escitalopram belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It may improve your energy level and feelings of well-being and decrease nervousness.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Derealisation, depression, apathy. Loss of libido. Apathy. My depression was already apathetic to an extent, although anxiety plays a big part. At 10mg this drug made it worse, to the point all I wanted to do was stare at the ceiling. I have the feeling, although not a doctor, this drug is better for those who are hyper, with lots of energy but suffer depression. It will calm them down. If you are already exhausted and uninterested in life, this seems to make it worse. At least it did for me. That may not be the case for everyone. 10mg was unbearable for me. 5mg and 2.5mg were better, with the latter the best. It took the edge off depression without causing impossible apathy. Even at that low dose however, my sex drive was cut to about 20%. Not good for relationships. I advise giving it a try if you need help, it works very well for many, but for no more than a month. If you feel worse by then, go back to your doctor and try something else. The three month rule is a fallacy. Overall I think it helped to some extent at a very low dose. I feel better now off the drug, but that may be because there was some healing while on it. M 35 6 months

5  Depression, anxiety, stress Decreased appetite, increased sex drive, increased energy (to the point I couldn't sleep), nausea the first few days, and clearer thinking. Decreased depression, anxiety, and negative thoughts. Took 5mg for 3 days to ease onto it then started my maintenance dose at 10mg. I have been on it for 2 weeks now. By day 2 I noticed a huge increase in energy (I was usually a high energy person before depression). My doctor started me on klonopin at night to help with sleep and it has done the trick. Every day I wake up feeling rested, and my mood improves by the day. They say max effect can be 6-8 weeks, but I can't imagine feeling any better. This medication has saved me from being miserable, negative, and anxious all the time! F 28 2 weeks

1  Low Serotonin- (migraines, not sad) Upset stomach, numb and a bit depressed, "I don't care" attitude, washed out, sounds altered in pitch, hot and cold, tongue getting caught on words, inattentive, extreme insomnia- chills got much worse at night, nausea, headache. My doctor guessed my afternoon headaches were a product of a lowered serotonin malfunction, and gad me try Lexapro. I tried 5mg for a day, and the side effects are just too much to even justify continuing the medication. Note: I am very sensitive to medications. This medication has helped friends and family of mine, so I am not saying it is awful, but simply that it did not work for me. F 21 1 days

4  Anxiety & Depression At first, my anxiety stayed the same, maybe even a little worse. But for about a week now I have had neither. Though I am very sleepy and a little spaced out, this is life changing for me. I did start taking this right before bed because at first I was getting nauseous from it. Now I either sleep through the nausea or it has gone away. F 31 1 months

1  Depression and Anxiety (social) Extreme fatigue. Could sleep 12 hours and wake up groggy. Never experienced one restful night of sleep. Was a college athlete, but the fatigue drove me to quitting the team and eventually leaving college and losing scholarship. Anxiety didn't get any better after taking it. If anything this taught me how to have and deal with a panic attack. Not sure how thats a positive. Did help with depression I will admit. Aside from depression this drug is worthless. And the only reason it works for depression is because it shuts off all of your damn emotions. You don't feel a damn thing. I have had the most difficult time socializing and connecting when on this drug. Coming off of this medication, I discovered my depression was 10x worse than when I started. Insomnia is one of the many side effects of coming off. Lets not forget about the brain zaps. Its like someone takes the electric stem things you get for back pain and slapped them on your temple. But it lasts for days at at time. Appetite is I want to say don't take this drug because of what it did to me side effect wise. If you are willing to risk more side effects than benefits, then be my guest. Only real benefit is that it made me forget orblock out depressive thoughts. Doctor probably won't warn you about how you may kill yourself or ruin your life while coming off of this drug. If you miss a dosage don't be surprised to have the side effects of withdrawal I was talking about. M 19 8 months

1  Depression and anxiety Was on 10 mg for 10 years, doctor upped dose to 20 mg a year ago, it caused: Very bad vertigo, balance problems, suicidal thoughts, ear pain, dry month, foggy brain, cannot focuse, cannot concentrate. I ended up quitting my job after being there for 30 years. At that point I do not think I knew what I was doing. F 58 10 years

1  Anxiety Initially, I experienced a "fuzzy head" and woozy feeling. My doctor stated this was normal. While on the medication I just never felt like I was "there" anymore. I had insomnia starting day 2. And on day 3 or 4 I began experiencing pain in my wrists and ankles. I had to wrap my wrists and ankles and use ice packs. I took a half dose of the medication thinking maybe the initial dose was too much too soon, but the side effects did not change. The longer I was on the medication the worse the pain became. My anxiety was controlled, but the pain was the deal breaker. I was told by my doctor and the literature that came from the pharmacy that the side effects I experienced normally didn't happen. I stopped the medication and the pain went away within 1-2 days. F 33 30 days

1  Anxiety Sudden onset of fear and scared, then panic, then diarrhea, then this cold feeling with Shivering as if cold outside had to put warming blankets on in midst of summer, increased heart rate , increased blood pressure! This happened numerous times while trying to take this med over 6 months. One day palpitations were so bad and blood pressure very low. Wound up with cardiology work up the ENT workups as well . This med was poison to my body. 8 months later I am still having symptoms, lightheaded dizzy roller coaster feeling in head and sudden onset anxiety with BP going from 120/7 to 175/100 in fear!! Lasts about 20 minutes!!! I am furious I was given this poison. I wonder daily if I will have A anxiety attack get light headed or feel normal!! How long can this go on?? F 64 6 months

2  Anxiety Tired, lazy, absent minded, no emotions, headaches, weight gain Getting on this drug was a nightmare, took at least a month to start working. Weaning off was not as bad as I expected, but I went slow. My Dr told me nothing about side effects, which really was annoying, had to Internet search for answers, refused to take more than 10 mg. Gained 40 lbs, feel like I lost a year of my life. I highly recommend looking at other options before going down this road, and find a good doctor....Turns out a drug I was taking for heartburn caused my anxiety in the first place. So unnecessary!  1  Panic disorder & depression Feeling of impending doom - nausea - diarrhea - vivid dreams that you can't tell are real or not - SUICIDAL THOUGHTS - extreme depression - crying spells - wanting to crawl out of your skin PLEASE READ!!! If you are having any of these symptoms- 1. You are not alone! 2. It will pass. I took lexapro around 1 pm. I felt manic, hyper, super giggly. Once those side effects subsided I felt ok. Until I went to bed. I woke up in an absolute panic. I felt like a blanket of doom was covering me. I felt like I had just watched someone kill my baby in front of me. I was hysterical, crying, pacing the floor. Sweating - felt like I had 106 degree fever but was shaking like I was hypothermic. I took Xanax to calm me down and go back to sleep. It helped until I woke up in the morning with the same feeling of DOOM. The depression was so deep I was thinking of suicide every minute of the day. I have never experienced depression like this before taking the lexapro. One pill of lexapro and these symptoms lasted for 4 days, I am on the fourth day and am still feeling symptoms. I couldn't eat for three days straight. The sight of food made me gag. I felt like I was going absolutely crazy. I went to doctors, psychiatrists, and even the emergency room all in 3 days. I was crying every 5 minutes. My advice to you, if you are feeling any of these symptoms. Relax - you are NOT going crazy. Going to the ER and getting an IV really helped me with the dehydration from diarrhea and I think flushed some of this POISON out of me. Also ingesting activated charcoal should help. Going to try that today. I am so glad for everyone that lexapro has worked for, but for me, F 24 1 days

1  Post-concussive syndrome/depression NAUSEA. So bad I could not function. And I was already nauseous from the concussion, and this made it 10xs worse. I was not depressed before the concussion, so maybe the drug just wasn't right for me. Many people in my family took it and had a really great response, so my doctor thought it might work for my genetics. Sadly, wrong. I hope you have a better experience with it. My mother and sister swear by it. I was amazed by the positive changes in their mood, patience and tolerance for difficult situations. My mother is my father's care taker. He has Alzheimer's, and it's taken a real toll on her. Lexapro made everything so much better for her. I wish I would have had a similar experience. Now I'm trying Wellbutrin (first day).  5  serotonin deficiency no sex drive (getting better with time) I felt much more calm within a few hours of taking this drug. It's not psychosomatic, I have a clean lifestyle (no illicit drugs / alcohol. I'm vegan and only eating non-processed foods) I react quickly to anything "unclean" plus with serotonin deficiency, I am going to react quickly when my levels rise. Anyway, in one month I have only had one anxiety attack. I'm much more calm and I don't get angry over stupid things anymore. I'm on 10mg daily and am so happy I found this drug. I am perturbed with myself for suffering for so long because I didn't want to be on an ssri. F 36 4 weeks
