4  Panic attacks and GAD I started with 2.5mg with no side effects. I was on sertraline and experienced a lot of side effects - Lexapro has helped. I bumped my dosage up to 5mg on Tuesday night and have experienced dizziness, nausea, tired, slight anxiety. I am going to keep pushing through. Lexapro has definitely helped me manage my anxiety. I just have to push through the dosage change. F 29 3 weeks

1  Anxiety Sore throat, feeling of something is stuck in my throat, extreme tiredness, emotionless, lots of gas in abdomen. I get sudden anxiety without any reason. I used to take alprazolam for a couple of days and it used to work. Then my doctor told me to swich to escitalopram 10 mg. I tried it twice. First time I got sore throat just after first day. My doctor told me to stop. And then restart in a few days. He told me that this will go away. Second time, it’s worse than the first. I wouldn’t advice anyone to take this anti-anxiety medicine. More over, i came to know that it’ll take a week until it’s out of my system. So I guess I’ll have to suffer for a week even I’m not taking the medicine. 42 3 days

5  Depression and anxiety Jittery for a few days with mild headache. Both went away within a couple of weeks. Worsened my tinnitus somewhat, gained 5 lbs. over two years, even while exercising more and eating less. Muted sex drive (it is still there, but deeper under the surface) and very level emotions (no "ooh and ahhh" feelings while seeing a beautiful sunset for example). Overall this is the best SSRI I have taken. I am on a very low dose, but it has worked very well to lift me out of depression and anxiety associated with a hard life period (both parents with dementia, declined and died, I was responsible for obtaining and overseeing care). If you are overwhelmed and feel hopeless, I recommend giving Lexapro a try. Start with a very low dose (I started with 2.5 mg and ramped up to 5 mg) and side effects should be very mild.  2  Moderate anxiety and moderate depression I had a severe allergic reaction to Lexapro that also came with an anxiety attack unlike any I've experienced before. When I went to the ER the nurse that checked me in said it wasn't possible to react that fast to it because it takes time to build up in the system. However, the nurse that ran my IV and gave me Epinephrine said that allergic reactions vary person to person and can happen quickly in some. Aside from the anaphylaxis reaction I had, side effects of withdrawal has been headaches (that almost felt like migraines), mania, exhaustion, depression, mood swings, irritability, shakes, suicidal thoughts (the worst I've ever had), naseau, muscle pain, weakness, upset stomach, diarrhea, fluctuating fever, cold chills, and heart racing. Don't feel alone if you feel Lexapro kick in quicker than most other people. I want you to know that you're not alone. F 29 1 days

5  Anxiety disorder, mild depression The first week I felt truly awful, fluey, runny nose, disrupted sleep, vertigo, weird and spacy. No nausea or headaches though. All stopped except for the sleep disturbance which resolved at the 2 week mark. (I moved the dose from bedtime to morning on my drs advice, which helped with the insomnia). After 3 weeks feeling very lethargic/fatigued/sleepy in afternoon and early evening, giving it another week or so and hoping this will improve. Just can't keep my eyes open at times, if I lie down to read will just fall asleep. I had a great reduction in anxiety and over- thinking/ruminating within days. I feel calm nearly all of the time, just don't worry about so many things that I used to think a lot about. Irritability with my family completely gone and the PMT I'd developed in the last year (mood swings, tension) also seems to be gone. I'm very pleasantly surprised with how effective this is. I'm sleeping more with shorter awake periods too. F 49 25 days

3  depression/anxiety tiredness, reduced motivation, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when attempting to taper dosage, or switch to another drug. For me Lexapro has the fewest side effects of all the SSRI's, SNRI's that I have tried over the years. The lack of motivation is the most troublesome side effect. And, when I have tried to lower the dosage, or stop; The brain zaps, dizziness, headaches, stomach upset, anxiety, depression, all start within three to five days. While there are some lucky people who do not get withdrawal symptoms, I have read that some studies show that these symptoms can be worse for people who have taken the drug for a long time. Also, these studies show that withdrawal symptoms from Lexapro, and some other SSRI's, can be more intense than Benzodiazepine withdrawal. Only doctors and their patients can decide which drug is best for them. If I was starting over, knowing what I know now, I would avoid all SSRI's and SNRI's. M 71 14 years

4  Anxiety and Panic 1st week: insomnia, constipation, dry mouth After 1st week: frequent urination and pain in urethra (I’m a male). It works REALLY well on anxiety after about the 2nd week! I loved it! Works really well on anxiety after the 3rd week or maybe before. It helps with sleep after about 2 weeks, but causes insomnia in the first week or so. It does cause eye pain in the first week as well. It works really well. I had to stop taking it because of unitary pain probably due to my age (50). I would definitely give this a try. I really liked it! M 49 8 weeks

3  anxiety weight gain and trouble losing weight; low sex drive; feel "out of it" a lot (like a zombie); my emotions are so even that it's like I don't even have emotions anymore Started taking when my youngest was about a year old and still waking up multiple times a night. The lack of sleep was making me crazy and my anxiety was through the roof. This medicine DID help me get through that time. The problem was when I tried getting off of it by doing a slow (Dr. prescribed) wean. One day out of the blue I had what I thought was a heart attack (I'm a healthy woman in my 30's). Went to the ER where I received no answers - just that my heart was fine. I had a second attack while relaxing by the pool and went to get checked out again - again, heart fine and no answers. My own research led me to realize these were panic attacks. My first ones ever. I went to a specialist who told me I could never go off this medication; that my body needs it. I don't buy that but I went back on. Am ready to try weaning again soon because I want to feel less like a zombie, have more energy for my kids and lose some weight! F 39 2.5 years

5  Anxiety, Panic, Benzo W/D I started taking to help me get off the nasty addictive benzos. No bad side effects except it takes a lot longer to reach orgasm. After I have been off benzos for 6 months, I will slowly come off the lexapro. It is good to know this drug is not addictive. Stay away from benzos. They work great at first. That is the honeymoon period. The ugly divorce happens after you have been on the drug awhile, become addicted, become tolerant to the drug's effect, and your dose starts to climb. Benzos are the hardest drugs to withdraw from in all of modern medicine. Some ppl are never able to detox and they just stay on the drug and remain sick. It is a horrible feeling. I am currently using lexapro to try to help me get off valium one final time and it seems to be working after over 30 years of using benzos. I am now at day 18 using 10 mgs of lexapro and I can start to feel some of the anti-anxiety and anti-panic effects and I am getting some relief from the horrible bizarre benzo withdrawal symptoms. Go to benzobuddies and find out how horrific these drugs can be. You can also email me at [email protected] and I will try to answer any questions you might have. These drugs are only meant to be used short-term, 2 weeks or less. If you use daily for over a month, addiction is almost a guarantee. Spare yourself the agony and stay away from these horrible addictive monsters. Some ppl commit suicide to escape the agonizing withdrawals. You can not describe the pain you go through adequately with words. M 56 18 days

1  Depression/anxiety Drugs do not help emotional problems! They only add new ones!! Or make you numb and irritable. Then the doctors do not tell you that you cannot get off antidepressants ever without suffering withdrawals! Psychiatric drugs are harmful. Stay away. Ruined my life. F 53 5 years
