3  schizo/bipolar/depression This medicince by far is the most effective when treating symptoms it has low impact on weight gain. i recommend this drug if you have experienced weight gain with other anti physcotics such as seroquel and zyprexa, i believe those drugs are linked to DIABETES, WEIGHT GAIN, and OVER EATING AND UNCONTROLLABLE HUNGER the dosing is very easy with abilify starting dose 15mg and that is the recommended dose you stay on according to my shrink abilify has not been found affective at higher does due to extreme side effects this medicine made my eyes roll in back of my head once M 32 14 years

5  For bipolar I had none while I was on it. It was a great drug for me. It was a total nightmare detoxing on it. I might add that I titrated down exactly by the doctors instructions. I have been off it more than 2 months and I still have insomnia and akethesia. F 61 10 years

5  Bipolar 1 Digestive issues heartburn initially, slight tremor in hands No adverse/serious effects really It`s been weight neutral - the most than any previous antipsychotics i`ve been on (5 in total). Has made me silent from the head (no racing thoughts or psychotic features anymore), doesn`t make me drowsy or tired - like say, seroquel or zyprexa did. M 39 10 years

1  Misdiagnosised bipolar disorder So many I don't know where to start. I began as having depression. 3 years later, I was diagnosed bipolar. I and my new doctor now believe I was misdiagnosed bipolar. We feel it was the pharmaceutical drugs I have been on for many years that made me bipolar. One of the most severe drugs I took was Abilify. I think it is as strong as cocaine and other hard drugs. I had cognitive problems, apathy, couldn't feel anything like I was numb, terrible choices and therefore, horrible outcomes. Overspending to the point of stealing money from family members, lost jobs and lost friends and family in the end. Please be careful about this drug! I honestly do not consider this a medication. My doctors told me it was a antidepressant to help with my other medications. But it was an antipsychotic! I was told not to pay attention to any side effects because they are rare and that all of these medications work the same. THEY DO NOT! BEWARE! Since I was told that I never thought of consulting with a pharmacist. Now I have researched and found out that pharmacists know more about psychotherapy meds than doctors. I wish I would have known that. At first, I lost jobs because of my behaviors. I started loosing friends because of irritability and I no longer felt like myself. Then I lost my family because I started stealing their money to go on spending sprees on EBay. It got so bad that my family no longer wanted to have anything to do with me. I also had a lot of weight gain. I was 130 pounds and blew up to 200 pounds. So I started having severe problems because of low self esteem. I told my doctor all this and he just said I needed it and he was overweight himself so why worry? I thought maybe he was right because members of my family started gaining weight as they got older. Finally I got so frustrated about the weight gain that I thought I'd try to stop taking the pill myself. So I took half a pill for awhile and then I took 1/4 of it. I thought it would just decrease my weight. It did that and more! I started eating small meals and was no longer as hungry. Plus, I F 53 10 years

2  OCD Loss of libido, buzzing sensations in head, short-term memory loss, poor night vision I have been on and off Abilify for 9 years. At 30mgs, I noticed the buzzing sensations, and all the other side effects listed. At 10 mg and lower, I still felt all the side effects except the buzzing sensations. I was taking abilify with lexapro, and a couple other drugs my dr. switched out for lexapro. The only good thing about this medication was, it did not experience RLS. When I finally weened myself off Abilify, the only side effect I noticed was restless leg syndrome. It is discomforting, but it only lasted about 5 minutes every other day. I am now off abilify, and lexapro. I am in therapy so I have learned a lot of ways to combat my anxiety, however the thoughts are hard to control so I am going to ask my doctor if he can prescribe something or the ocd, possibly anafranil.  5  Bipolar II with Severe Depression Weight gain of 40 lbs, severe muscle cramps, decreased night vision, wakefulness and wandering at night, uncontrolled eyebrow movement, tooth decay, intermittent anxiety I would not be alive if it were not for this drug. It completely changed my life after being on just about every other type of drug there is out there. Worked within days. Tried to get off of it once due to the weight gain and fell into a deep depression that was extremely scary. Can't get off of it even if I wanted to. Too scared. Take it along with Seroquel and Topimax. Depakote made me a vegetable. I will have to live with the side effects, even though some have been mistaken for more serious illnesses such as MS.  2  psy: you need to control your brain After initially taking the drug in my early 20s I was convinced that it was helping me, clarifying my thoughts, lifting my mood, giving me some stability in my changing life events and difficult experiences, the shock of dropping out of uni + other things. After a couple of years I noticed It became harder to study, and remember things but I took this as something that I had to work harder on to overcome. Only after I graduated from uni and decided to come off it myself, I experienced terrible effects: these are as follows, brain paralysis, terrible short term memory, forgetting things in seconds, repeat what I do, and do not know what I have done. There are times when my memory is so poor it just goes blank and I feel I may have alzheimers. My concentration is so bad, I miss obvious detail. My neck twists in contortions it is so embarrassing- tardive dystonia which has not been diagnosed. During withdrawal I had terrible headaches, nothing for the pain, I could not sleep at all as the Abilify may seem good at first but do not take it for a very long time on your own. Due to my negative experiences and abuse at the hands of psychiatrists I trusted, I have suffered emotionally and now am suffering physically. F 31 8 years

4  Depression Dizziness, insomnia. It's been the drug that has worked the best for me. I worry about the dizziness though. I'm afraid of falling down and getting injured. I can't even get up from a seated position without feeling dizzy. Bending over to pick up anything off the floor or low level is especially hard. I get extremely dizzy and have to grab hold of something to keep from falling. M 50 7 years

3  bipolar disorder/psychotic mania No side effects other than lethargy for the first year. I was at 10, then 15 mg for six years after that until two months ago. My new doctor raised my dose to 20mg and I developed NMS symptoms. Fever, irregular heartbeat, sweating, blood pressure irregularities, etc. I had thoughts of suicide (extremely rare for me) could barely speak, was comatose and basically felt like I'd die from fright. After being on this for so long, my only advice is to not raise it quickly. It's a very sensitive drug. I am now developing problems with my liver, so discontinuation is likely this week. Too bad, it has worked well for years to squash mania and psychotic symptoms. Do not raise too quickly! I went through every state of psychotic mania and depression the drug tries to suppress, and almost killed myself because of this drug being at too high a dose. After lowering it back to 15 mg my mental status is even, but now I have liver problems. I recommend this drug to the desperate and very ill because it does help, but not for a sleep aid or help with a minor or transient depression. Very scary drug. F 42 7 years

5  bipolar None that I am aware of. This drug (and I am only on 5mg now) gave me my life. I was completely unstable, foggy, rocking, in the black, sleeping depressive fragile anxious way, and then this drug came along and made everything all right. With therapy, I have resumed a normal life, work full time, and am basically doing well. Taking Abilify was the turning point. F 33 6 years
