SYNTHROID  (LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM):  Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity. In children, having enough thyroid hormone is important for normal mental and physical development. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid disorders (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-07-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Born without a thyroid So, as I was born without a thyroid, I've been taking synthroid my whole life, and after reading these comments, I'm beginning to realize the reason I feel so depressed/crazy/"foggy" is because of this drug. I always thought, maybe it's just me, or it's normal to feel this way, because I've always felt it. Gosh, I am so relieved to know that it's the drug! maybe I should try another drug.... 21 21 years

1  Hypothyroidism I’m a 33-year-old modestly fit female. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My doctor started me on 50mcg/day exactly 2 weeks ago. It’s been all downhill since then. My hopes for seeing any improvements were dashed. I’m feeling much *worse* than before I went on the medication, as it seems to be amplifying my hypothyroid symptoms. I feel even more exhausted, more cold intolerant, and I’ve gained 7 lbs. in ONE WEEK!! I’m a very active person, and I have continued to exercise and watch what I eat. True, I know it is most likely water weight, as I’m really swollen, esp. in my upper abdomen area and face – but it’s just so discouraging! I’ve been told that this is normal if you’re not able to convert T4 to T3 very well (Synthroid is a T4-only med), so I’ll probably require the addition of a T3 medication or at least the natural dessicated thyroid which contains both T4 and T3. I’m going to have to go i 33 2 weeks

1   I am sick and tired of the fluctuation in potency from one lot to another of synthroid. It never fails, everytime i have a new refill, within a few days to a week i feel very different than i did on the prior refil. One batch and i start having hyper symptoms, next batch hypo, very rarely do i get lucky enough to get a batch that makes me feel normal. I get 90 day supply which is a long time to go with a bad batch of this stuff. I used to get 30 day supply and that was an even worse roller coaster ride. This drug is the pits no matter how you slice it.i've been on thyroid replacement for close to 30 years and the impact on quality of life has turned me inside out. I am tired of being told that this is the best it's ever going to be, and just live with it. When is the potency issue ever going to be fixed? 58 10 years

No more knee pain! Can drive 2.5 - 3 hrs. with no stopping. Muscle tone coming back. Bad stuff. What is a natural alternative??? 66 12 months

1  Hypothyroidism I have had Hypothyroidism for over 20 years. Synthroid and Levothyroxine will cause some or all of the following symptoms after taking long term. 1.Fatigue not normal fatigue but a sick flu like fatigue 2. Joint pain. Dr will test you for inflammatory diseases and even diagnose you with fibromyalgia etc. 3. Brain fog. This is the absolute worse of symptoms. As it interferes with livelihood, parenting, career, outside hobbies etc. 4. Hair loss. Make sure your iron levels are up so the dr won't misdiagnose you. 5. Depression, anxiety and confusion. The uneducated Dr. will most likely quickly place you on anti anxiety and depression medication. And send you to a therapist. 6. Weight gain. The Dr. will tell you to work out and suggest foods to eat when you are actually already eating and working out. 7. Frequent urination. 8. Stomach bloating. 9. Swelling of extremities. 10. Cold hands and feet. I had to explain this to an ignorant Dr. that wearing a coat and layered socks in summer southern heat is not normal. 11. Dry, tough skin. 12. Poor vision. The DR. will instead send you to an ophthalmologist. 13. Nausea and upset stomach. These have been my experiences on Synthroid and Levothyroxine. I have been on all levels. The highest I've been on was 200mcg. At one point in my life, I was placed on Armour Thyroid before this medicine was reformulated. I did so much in that time span of life and so much good living then. No symtoms, clear thinking, excelled in sc excelled in school and gathering, great social life.I could write legible. Speak without forgetting and stumbling over words. The best in life. Synthroid WILL work in the beginning, maybe a few years or so.. but after time passes you will experience the above. I don't care how much positive affirmations and meditation you do. You must be your own advocate and research. Do not live a life with struggle because of this medication. Do not waste your life fussing with incompetent uninformed Drs. If they don't want to prescribe something with T3...Move on and find one who is knowledgeable. Family will most likely not understand this disease. 45 23 years
