SYNTHROID  (LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM):  Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity. In children, having enough thyroid hormone is important for normal mental and physical development. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid disorders (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-07-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Hypothyroidism Was on synthroid 100 mcg 27 years ago which in subsequent years was reduced to 59 mcg due to the development of dizziness , gastrointestinal symptoms etc In October Endocrinologist in response to TSH Of5.4 but normal t 4 recommended that on weekends I take an additional 50 mcg pill Three months later started having palpitations Didn't link the two initially and them muscle weakness and hand tremors and dizziness . Realized there was a possible connection because symptoms would exacerbate two to three hours after morning dose . I stopped the extra dose and brought this to attention of endocrinologist who refuses adamantly to see a connection. I do not feel well It is very hard to get an appointment these days But have been able to get one 10 days away Will also go to a new GP Since existing one despite my enumeration of symptoms Insists that it is not the synthroid Very distressed F 64 27 years

1  Hypothyroid Was fine on synthroid 50 mcg Endo increased it to additional 100 mcg on weekends Three months subsequent to increase gradual emergence of myriad symptoms Felt extremely sick ,palpitations that were audible nocturnally Change in BM patterns , muscle weakness and general fatigue ,blurred vision . Hand tremors ,body shaking from inside . Both GP and endo dismissive and extremely condescending .was incredulous at the decline over such a short period , didn't know how to proceed because it was obvious that sone doctors are extremely rigid and do not have the capacity to deal with idiosyncratic deviations Both insisted that blood levels were fine and emphatically indicated that I should continue in synthroid I was convinced it was synthroid because I noticed anecdotally that a couple of hours after taking it The feeling of not being well would emerge Stopped taking the extra dose and then stopped taking the regular med but resumed out of fear that prolonged cessation would put me into hypothyroid state Have an appointment D t with another endo F 64 0 years

1  Hashimotos Thyroiditis In full disclosure I was taking the generic levothyroxine Depression (extreme) Weight Gain Racing Heart Insomnia Headaches Weird pressure in the roof of my mouth I started taking 25MG prescribed by PCP due to bloodwork showing TSH about 4 with only symptom being dry eyes. After 6 months, I'd gain 30 lbs and had developed depression. Went to endocrinologist who said dosage was too low so increased to 50MG. Side effects persisted. Endo increased dosage to 75MG. At that point I could not stop crying and couldn't get out of bed so I knew for sure it was the medication causing it. Once I quit taking it, I felt much better, but was now 40 lbs overweight.  1  Hypothyroid after Graves' Disease Not the first time I've been on it...I haven't done well with Synthroid since the manufacturer changed in back in 1982-83. Since then I always get too nervous while on it, can't sleep right, tend to get chest pains on left even if dose is supposedly OK by labs...yet, I have a lot of low-thyroid symptoms that never resolve, either. Messes up my breathing, too, and energy level is never good on it...have tried so many other drugs & doses over the years...only Old Synthroid version really helped me. I still wish they would bring back a version of Synthroid that is closer to what they made in 1982-83, when they changed a couple of "inactive" ingredients on it, the assaying method used, and possibly where they got the raw materials from. I haven't had a good quality of life at all, since they changed this drug--I am out of new drug options to take...been on so many, over the years--natural ones, Tirosint, combining synthetic with T-3, back on Synthroid here and there...different generics and brands....I'm sick of it. Some of us need more options, and I wish I had a good one, now. Working on petition to get better treatment for thyroid patients--in memory of my brother Jordan, a Hashimoto's patient who also couldn't get the help he needed.  1  Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism I didn't think I would be one of the many people online who hate this drug, and yet here I am. My TSH was on the upper end of normal so my doctor recommended I try Synthroid to see if it would help my awful symptoms from Hashimotos. I have no side effects from Synthroid except two: unbearable, debilitating fatigue and weight gain. I exercise constantly, track my calories and eat healthy. My weight was the same for 1 year before Synthroid. After Synthroid, I immediately gained 5 lbs. I have to sleep all day, 24/7. It's like being on sleeping pills. I told my doctor and she said "that's unusual." It really feels like doctors don't care about our well-being at all. I can't wait to get off this medication, but for some people, they can't. There needs to be a better way to deal with our thyroid issues than apathetic doctors and this ridiculous drug. F 34 6 months

1  Hashimotos Even on a low dose 25 mcg I had jitters HR 90s palpitations and migraines with tinnitus. I need 75 mcg to take the TSH down to normal. Levothyroxine generic wasnt as bad even if its supposed to be the same T4 med. I switched to Armour Thyroid with far better results. F 65 1 years

1  Hashimotos At first it seemed to work. Had more energy no brain fog. Then after the dr upped my dosage I began having heart palpitations chest pain high blood pressure anxiety leg cramps and pain. Couldn't sleep at night headaches vision changes and so much more. My dr only believes in synthroid. Thinking about changing drs. I've read many articles and patient stories on this drug. Felt better off the drug than on it. F 47 8 months

1  Hypothyroidism I have had Hypothyroidism for over 20 years. Synthroid and Levothyroxine will cause some or all of the following symptoms after taking long term. 1.Fatigue not normal fatigue but a sick flu like fatigue 2. Joint pain. Dr will test you for inflammatory diseases and even diagnose you with fibromyalgia etc. 3. Brain fog. This is the absolute worse of symptoms. As it interferes with livelihood, parenting, career, outside hobbies etc. 4. Hair loss. Make sure your iron levels are up so the dr won't misdiagnose you. 5. Depression, anxiety and confusion. The uneducated Dr. will most likely quickly place you on anti anxiety and depression medication. And send you to a therapist. 6. Weight gain. The Dr. will tell you to work out and suggest foods to eat when you are actually already eating and working out. 7. Frequent urination. 8. Stomach bloating. 9. Swelling of extremities. 10. Cold hands and feet. I had to explain this to an ignorant Dr. that wearing a coat and layered socks in summer southern heat is not normal. 11. Dry, tough skin. 12. Poor vision. The DR. will instead send you to an ophthalmologist. 13. Nausea and upset stomach. These have been my experiences on Synthroid and Levothyroxine. I have been on all levels. The highest I've been on was 200mcg. At one point in my life, I was placed on Armour Thyroid before this medicine was reformulated. I did so much in that time span of life and so much good living then. No symtoms, clear thinking, excelled in sc excelled in school and gathering, great social life.I could write legible. Speak without forgetting and stumbling over words. The best in life. Synthroid WILL work in the beginning, maybe a few years or so.. but after time passes you will experience the above. I don't care how much positive affirmations and meditation you do. You must be your own advocate and research. Do not live a life with struggle because of this medication. Do not waste your life fussing with incompetent uninformed Drs. If they don't want to prescribe something with T3...Move on and find one who is knowledgeable. Family will most likely not understand this disease. 45 23 years
