I can't miss one dose of this medication or my stomach ulcers will flare-up to the point that I am extremely sick. People must realize that medications work differently for everyone. Nine years ago, an endoscopy revealed a miniscule amount of Barrett's, and my GI doc and GP both insisted I take a pump inhibitor. Aciphex doubled me over in pain and Nexium was advised. I was told I would need to take it the rest of my life to prevent the Barrett's from getting any worse. The thought of esophageal cancer was enough motivation to take the drug. The second endoscopy, three years later, showed no change in the Barrett's. Another three years has passed, and I'm due for a third. In the meantime, I believe the Nexium is making me miserable. All my docs insist that not taking it will increase the potential of getting something awful. They also insist that symptoms reported in this group, and the symptoms I've reported to them, just don't make sense. To make matters more confusing, a recent barium swallow test revealed that I don't have acid reflux. I'm really confused. I was a professional singer and the acid burning behind the vocal cords caused hoarseness. For most of the years, I did not have a problem with using these medicines. That has all changed! For about 1 1/2 years, my general health has deteriorated to the point I have barely been able to continue my job. All the horrible symptoms I've described in the side effects section have wreaked havoc on my usual excellent health. I have had a brain MRI, auto immune blood tests which were both normal. I have an upcoming appointment with a neurologist but don't feel I need it now. I stopped Nexium 3 days ago, and the very next day, the debilitating weak muscles, extremely painful joints/muscles is gone. This is the second morning waking not having taken Nexium the night before and I feel like another person. I think if I continued this drug, I would have ended up in a wheelchair or dead. I am a vital, high energy person, strong personality woman and never miss my job due to sickness. I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL to have found this site and read the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS I have had from many others. NEXIUM (ESOMEPRAZOLE MAGNESIUM): Esomeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Esomeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter esomeprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away. For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Taking the wrong product could harm you.
