NEXIUM  (ESOMEPRAZOLE MAGNESIUM):  Esomeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Esomeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter esomeprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away. For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Taking the wrong product could harm you.   FDA Approval Date: 2001-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Acid Reflux and sleep apnea None whatsoever. Between having acid indigestion as far back as high school and sleep apnea, I was waking up choking on stomach acid. Couldn't breathe and turning blue in the face. Scared the wife to death! I was originally on Aciphex, which stopped my life-long battle with indigestion overnight. Had to switch to Nexium due to the military no longer providing Aciphex. The only difference I've noticed is with Aciphex, if I missed taking it for 2-3 days, the indigestion comes back. With Nexium,I'll notice it sooner (1-2 days). No insomnia, no depression, no nothing except a calm stomach that never bothers me any more. If it works, take it. If it doesn't, don't. Otherwise, risk getting Barret's Syndrone (like me) that can lead to cancer! 58 3 years

5  Acid Reflux I am a singer who was always hoarse for years until I began taking Nexium. Almost right away there was clarity in my voice. Haing had vocal cord surgery, I now take Nexium religiously without any side effects. I have been told to keep watch on bone health though as it can take away from your calcium absorption leaving women espe cially prone to osteoporosis. After several years of taking it I just had a bone scan for the disease and showed no problems. Be proactive and take your medication but also find out as much as you can about it and get tested as advised regularly. 49 7 years

3  Presumed Acid Reflux Initially no side effects. Then the following- dry mouth, foggy head, constant fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, substernal pain, back pain (including 2 trips to ER with one the drs thinking I had an aortic dissection), stuffed ears, stuffed sinuses, sore throat, horrible taste in mouth, altered stool consistency, fluttering in chest, breathlessness, flu like symptoms. Have been on Nexium in the past and it has helped with ulcers. So the drug has its good points This time was diagnosed with presumed acid reflux- initially put on Somac 20mg with no improvement, changed to NExium40m once daily. No real improvement for 4-6 weeks, then slowly symptoms of post nasal drip, coughing, breathlessness disappeared only to be replaced with constant bad taste in mouth after drinking water and severe chest pains, epigastric pain and back pain. Went to ER twice had stress tests and angiograms to rule out cardiovascular disease. Xrays to rule out lung issues, and ultrasounds to rule out other abd organ issues. Nothing found yet. Still waiting on barium studies and scope??? Discussed NExium being cause of signs with Dr who laughed, and gastroenterologist adamant that it is safe. I believe the relief in symptoms of acid reflux was because I changed diet and lost 10kg and not the NExium BUT the Nexium is responsible for other side effects. HAve felt at times I was dying, or have something seriously wrong with me but all tests come back NEGATIVE so far?? The last 2 weeks have had ribcage pain and back pain and flu like symptoms. Am worried about coming off the tablets and disobeying doctor and specialist and also reading about the acid rebound when stopping. 46 120 days

2  H pylori While Nexium did help get rid of my issue, the side effects were just too intense for me and I stopped treatment early. I have since then started to make changes to my diet to see how well I fare. While on Nexium I experienced: Palpitations, chest fluttering, brain fog, nervousness, night sweat, head ache, and dizziness. The brain fog and dizziness are finally beginning to subside, but they have been lingering the longest (5 days now off the meds, has felt like an eternity). This may be a miracle drug for some, in a way it did help me, but perhaps too strong to take for extended periods of time. Hopefully my diet changes will be the most effective medicine of all. 29 5 days

2   fatigue, lethargy, brain fog, just a very 'blah' and spaced out feeling. It helps my abdominal pain (ulcer) but I don't think it's worth it. I can't get out of my chair barely and I have zero motivation. Feeling 'not myself.' It's not exactly anxiety or depression that I am feeling though, I feel calm. Like, tranquilizer calm. 40 1 days

2  Esophagitis, GERD, H Pylori Blurry vision, fatigue, bloating, brain fog, tinnitus, dry mouth and throat I can't even tell if it somewhat helped me or just my diet and lifestyle changes made the difference. The side effects are too much, though. The doctors prescribe it like it's nothing but it left me mostly bedbound. I can't leave the house alone as I'm too weak to move, it's hard to shower, I can't cook for myself anymore. At 27 I became dependant on my parents. Now I'm afraid of acid rebound if I quit it. 27 40 days

1  Gastritis Mind fog, dizziness, fatigue, depression, My gastritis put me in hospital for 1 week and started on omeprazole there and they told me to continue for 2 more months, then my GI changed me to nexium after 1 week and I couldn't get any better since my initial symptoms of gastritis were similar to the side effects. I stopped 3 days ago and my fatigue and dizziness literally has improved. Hope I never have to take this again! 34 14 days

1  Hairal Hernia Brain Fog, joint pain, chest pain, fibromyalgia like symptoms, fatigued, general body aching. Had a bit of heartburn and had an endoscopy, started taking 20mg for about a week. Day 3 I started noticing the symptoms and didn't think it was the medicine. the preceding few weeks I had anxiety and panic attacks and this made it WAYYY WORSE. i was so irritated and had severe mood swings. At one point I wanted to yell at little kids at a grocery store because they were being loud! Yesterday was my last day after a week and I will not be taking this ever again. Will be going all natural. Ginger, turmeric, diet and lose weight. Not worth the side effects, rather deal with pain ad long term this medicine will kill you first. 29 7 days
