| 5 | Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome | The first month was terrible: nauseau, lots of crying and a roller coaster of emotions. Now things are much better! Aside from 1 instance of leg swelling and leg cramps every once in a while everything is back to normal and actually better than before! My doctor put on Yasmin to help control my PCOS and I think it's doing a great job. It's now a little easier to lose weight, my skin is improving lots, the hair on my head has stopped falling out at a rapid rate, the hair everywhere on my body is a lot finer and not so thick... the improvements go on and on! I'm so happy I'm on Yasmin now, I wish I would have been started on it sooner. | Okay... the sex drive thing is TRUE! But sometimes it's mind over matter and you can over come the lack of a sex drive. Just try to relax, do some meditation, have fun and bust out the lubricant if you have to. Hahaha! I've gone from near constant, low level head pain and as many as 16 full-blown migraine days a month, to zero back-ground pain and only 3 (fully treatable) migraine days a month. I also no longer experience the crushing mood drops and uncontrolled crying that would hit me like a hammer every month with my period. The added bonus has been my skin has cleared up and my hair has become glossy again. I'm dismayed to read how many have suffered awful side effects from Yasmin. But don't just complain and accept the next pill, take the time to educate yourself! READ, READ, READ and become your own expert. I am also a med student participating in a secondary study on hormone therapies, and I feel it's important to tell you that Yasmin, like ALL birth control pills, are synthetic hormones! Of course you're going to experience these things! Normally, in isolated tests, these side effects waned after 3 months of use in almost ALL research subjects. Compared to most that's pretty successful. I know how frustrating these hormones can be, but that's part of the compromise w/ bc pills... you take them because they're convenient and EFFECTIVE... in return you may experience some side effects. I recommend sticking with Yasmin for at least 3-4 months. I personally noticed that all of the depression, tiredness, etc definitely waned after 3 months. Your body has to get used to the hormone. Like most drugs, you build up a sort of "toleranace" to it once your chemistry adjusts. One warning: I did start to have near panic attacks, but after noticing they all happened in the mornings after my second coffee, I researched this and discovered that birth control pills can greatly intensify the effects of caffeine. If your only bad side effect is anxiety, you might try switching to half-caf or decaf before giving up on Yasmin. I feel terrible for all of you who have suffered on Yasmin, but for me it's my salvation.
