5 | Bleeding Gastric Ulcer | Tired, Burping, Gas, Nausea | I had very servere bleeding ulcers that kept me in ICU for nearly a month, I had 3 surgeries, and they placed me on protonix to reduce the acid in my stomach. This medicine is very helpful, it does its job and keeps my ulcers from happening again. | F | 17 | 40 mg 1X day | 9/7/2012 Patient History | 5 | M | | 8/18/2003 | 5 | GERD | None. | The only PPI that has given me relief. Must continue with restricted diet, however. Taking 40 mg. twice a day for past five months. | F | 63 | | 11/2/2009 | 5 | Acid Reflux | F | 32 | | 12/8/2009 | 4 | GERD | I used the medicine for several times and it helped with my GERD. However, I got nad stomach cramps after some time and had to stop. | F | 34 | | 11/9/2009 | 4 | Chronic Heartburn | Occipital Neuritus (24/7 head pain in the back of head) | I was on Protonix for 6-1/2 years. It was life changing when it came to heartburn. I went from being up 3-4 nights a week with extreme heartburn, to sleeping throughout the entire night every night. BUT, after being on it for 5-1/2 years, I started getting a burning/throbbing sensation in the back of my head. Then it started to become painful to touch my scalp. Kept asking doctor and neurologist if the Protonix could be causing it. Every doctor said "NO WAY!" So, continued on Protonix and tried every pain killer around, tried meditation, yoga, hot/cold compresses....nothing worked. Finally went off Protonix and switched to Nexium. After 3 weeks, I woke up without a headache or pain. Withink 3 months, ALL symptoms went away. I have a few different side effects with Nexium, but the occipital neuritis is GONE. I know that the Protonix caused it. My doctor now agrees with me. | F | 39 | | 11/25/2008 | 4 | | 9/5/2004 | 3 | Barrett's Esopagus | Drug does not work as well the longer I take it even on increased dosage! | F | 59 | | 6/2/2004 | 3 | ulser | M | 69 | | 8/6/2003 | 3 | | 7/22/2009 | 3 | GERD | I took protonix, 40 mg daily for approximately 2 months. Was told by doctor to wean myself off protonix and try over the counter medication. I decreased medication to every other day, then stopped protonix completely. I began to experience leg weakness, lightheadness, anxious feeling and nausea. Has anyone experienced withdrawal symtoms after discontinuing Protonix???? | F | 58 | | 7/29/2006 | 3 | Acid Reflux/Gerd | After a year of taking I feel off balanced, and in a state of fog. Can't always focus. Irritated easily.. exhausted. The dizziness is killing me and making me withdraw from life. I am beginning to think it's this medication. I was told to wean ... I am for sure! | It seemed to help with my reflux but I need to get off of this to see if this is causing my symptoms. I have had MRI's, many blood labs... all are normal. | F | 45 | 40MG 1X day | 5/10/2017 | 3 | Severe esophagitis and acid reflux | Severe muscle and joint pain | By the 3rd evening after starting the medication I began suffering joint and muscle pain, most severe in my legs, hips and back. I'd be better by morning, take my daily dose and every evening after I'd have worsening symptoms. My body was screaming at me. My legs would hardly hold me up because of pain and spasms. I had to take pain medication, hot baths, muscle relaxers just to sleep for the subsequent 4 nights and then finally quit taking it. I found it remarkable that as soon as I stopped my first dose I was much better that evening. It worked for my esophagitis, but the side effects weren't worth it. So awful. | F | 55 | 1X day | 2/2/2021 | 3 | Acid reflux | Serious weight gain | Protonix/pantoprazole works however the weight gain is something I cannot deal with any longer. 25 lbs over a 2 year period. Back has started to hurt from additional weight and found it isn't good for your bones. Went off it cold turkey a few days ago & now take 1 Pepcid AC tablet at night and started taking Aloe Vera gels. Will see if the weight comes off and if the Aloe Vera gels & Pepcid AC work. | 2X day | 6/5/2022 | 2 | Immunotherapy induced colitis | Severe pain along top of stomach. Rash on chest, legs. Palmar flushing (red palms similar to those with Lupus). | Prescribed due to GI issues and being prescribed high doses of steroids. This was prescribed as a prophylactic to avoid GI issues due to steroids. Prescribed 3 times across 6 months. Took for several weeks first time and 1-2 weeks for subsequent. Got severe stomach pain across top of stomach. Noticed chest Rash at this time which increased as steroids tapered. Stopped taking, and stomach pain stopped next day. Rash took a long time to clear. 3 months later, GI flareup. Mentioned symptoms but prescribed again. More severe rash--firy on chest/lacy pattern on shins and palmar flushing. Stopped taking. Symptoms went away. Third Immuno/GI flareup: Told hospital Dr. of prior issues. Prescribed again. Took for one week. Felt terrible, with indigestion, fatigue, hair seems to be thinning, adn palmar flushing returned. Sent new GI doc info on side effects and picture of rash; and he instantly wrote back to stop taking it. 24 hours later, feel great. Complete turnaround from fatigue, stomach issues, etc. Have tried to advocate not taking it at each GI episode but it is sometimes very hard to be heard/concerns dismissed. Know that this drug can cause lupus and liver issues. | M | 64 | 40 1X day | 4/1/2022 | 2 | Acid Reflux/Gastritis | I thought this drug was great because it kept my acid reflux at bay and I didn't have to worry about it, but now I just found out that I have several gastric polyps (30) and they most likely were caused by long term use of PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) like Protonix and Prilosec, which I was on before the Protonix. This is not good, so now I had to get off (slowly) but I am having to deal with the heartburn/acid reflux every day again now. I am very mad that none of my doctors that knew I was on this stuff for years didn't even warm me that this could happen with long term use. My advice is to stay off the stuff unless it's completely necessary, then only take it for a while, not several years. | I am trying all the natural stuff I can find, (aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, etc.) but so far, they don't work as well as the protonix did. | F | 50 | 40 mg 1X day | 2/1/2012 | 2 | Chills, stomach pain/nausea, increased nausea, coughing, nasal drainage, face swelling. | F | 39 | | 4/21/2009 | 2 | GERD | Severe diahrreha after the first dose!!! | F | 45 | | 11/2/2001 | 2 | Barrett's Esopagus/Gastric Reflux | Stops working after taking 3 months-Even with increased dosage | 59 | | 6/2/2004 | 1 | Gastritis | Foggy Brain, eye pain, vision foggy, severe fatigue, depression, nausea, restless legs, anxiety, nightmares. | This drug made me so depressed that I wanted to jump onto the train tracks and end it. I have never been a depressed person but I thought I was dying. By 3 pm I was out for the count every day. Couldn't get off the couch. Dr. sent me for a Cat scan looking for Tumors or Cancer. He couldn't figure it out. All blood/tests came back normal but why was I so sick? Couldn't eat anything but baby food fruit and lost 15 lbs. Stopped the Protonix on my own and started to feel better. | F | 67 | 40mg 1X day | 9/6/2014 |
