| 4 | PAD peripheral artery disease | A little more tired than usual. | I use to get really bad leg cramps especially at night while trying to sleep. Two days after starting Plavix I had no leg cramps and very little tingling. Occasionally I feel like something in my legs is trying to get out, but that is not as severe as it was. Also have been in 8 wks of PT and increased my walking distance from about 50 feet to 1/3 of a mile yesterday. Trying to prevent having stents put in legs. Also started wearing mild compression stockings. Plavix works by altering the platelets. Palatets have a life span of about 10 days, which means about 10 days after stopping Plavix, there will be no more platelets in the blood stream that have been altered by Plavix. Our neighbor agrees anything can happen after stopping Plavix. She took it for the prescribed year after receiving a stent, and a few weeks after stopping Plavix she had the first of several mini strokes. After the stent I was tired and weak. I had lost a lot of blood and knew it would be awhile before I regained my energy. I have been on Plavix since Jan. 2005. I will be on this medication with aspirin for the rest of my life. I have a padded stent in the brain in the left carotid artery because of a brain aneurysm. No tissue will grow or attach to it. The one noticeable side effect I have is a lot of brusing. The latest FDA warning that some patients cannot process Plavix because they are poor metabolizers, which can be determined by the patient taking a genetic test. I had to go off it twice for medical/dental reasons. The first time I ended up in the hospital with chest pain that subsided. The second time I had a heart attack because of a blockage in a branch of the LAD and a large blood clot. A contributing factor was that I was on a several hour plane flight just hours before the heart attack. PLAVIX (CLOPIDOGREL BISULFATE): Clopidogrel is used to prevent heart attacks and strokes in persons with heart disease (recent heart attack), recent stroke, or blood circulation disease (peripheral vascular disease). It is also used with aspirin to treat new/worsening chest pain (new heart attack, unstable angina) and to keep blood vessels open and prevent blood clots after certain procedures (such as cardiac stent). Clopidogrel works by blocking platelets from sticking together and prevents them from forming harmful clots. It is an antiplatelet drug. It helps keep blood flowing smoothly in your body.
