SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  sinus infection I take very few medications, but my doctor suggested I try taking singular for a few days (before putting me on antibiotics) to help relieve my sinus infection and runny nose. It did help with my breathing. However after taking this medication for just 2 days by the second day I was experiencing joint pain and anxiety. I then decided to go on line to find out with others have experienced and now I know I was not just imagining these side effects. No more singular for me. F 63 2 days

5  COPD w/ exercise-induced asthma I haven't experienced negative side effects. I began taking this when my albuterol inhaler (Proventil) and inhaled corticosteroid (Pulmicort) were not adequately treating my shortness of breath. In subsequent years, my pulmonologist added Spriva, and I am now taking my albuterol via nebulizer. A generic equivalent (montelukast) is now available. I've been reluctant to switch, but the cost difference is substantial. Now I've seen some reviews (on this site and elsewhere) from people who, like me, had a good, long-term experience with the brand drug, but began experiencing seriously negative side effects when they switched to the generic. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this. F 62 8 years

4  asthma After first dose of generic by Torrent, I developed hives. Took me several days to figure out it was the generic singulair. Stopped it and hives have gotten better. Otherwise, no problems with any of the other generics I have gotten in the past. Started a Medrol dose pack to help relieve the residual itching from hives and doing much, much better. No more scalding hot showers in the middle of the night for me. F 62 8 years

3  for allergy-induced asthma Completely strung out, exhausted, fatigued, nervous, anxious, headache I cut dosage to 5 mg. a day; still had strong side effects. Have stopped taking it for two days and already, more relaxed, calm, no headache. I don't take drug in evening as I don't want a hellish night, so i take it during day and muddle through. May stop entirely, but it does seem to help somewhat with asthmatic reaction to allergies. Still, is it really worth it with other drug options out there? Singulair degrades my sense of quality of life--enjoying life and being present to oneself, family and friends. F 62 2 weeks

1  Allergic Rhinitus I was given the generic drug, Montelukast, which made me feel ill and made my allergy symptoms worse. I had already had some dizziness due to my allergies, I can’t take the any of the antihistamines so my ENT doc put me on this. At first I thought it was helping, but now I realize the only reason I felt better for the first few days was because I was also on a Medrol dose pack, which always makes me feel better. Over the course of the following two weeks after I completed the dose pack, I steadily felt worse and worse, with considerable nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, exhaustion, chills, low back pain, stuffy nose, and increased dizziness. Even though I had read over the possible side effects when I started the Montelucast , I guess I never believed I would have them and they were in the beginning quite insidious. I finally realized how horrible I was feeling, to the point I could barely function two days ago, and a light bulb went off. I read over the side effects again and bingo. I stopped the drug night before last, dizziness is less, stuffy nose is better, nausea and back pain are gone. I’m still very tired, but that could be partially due to lack of sleep last night. I’ve never experienced side effects this bad from any drug I’ve ever taken. I’m not sure how something this bad could be good for anyone, even if they don’t have side effects, makes me question what could it cause long term? F 62 22 days

4  For allergies and asthma This medication works wonders for the asthma, but the only side effect I've experienced (according to the label) is very vivid dreams; however, I have gained about 30 pounds for no apparent reason. I can't seem to lose the excess weight even though I have dieted and excercised. I honestly believe it is Singulair related even when the doctor does not agree with me. Apparently this medication works very differently for each person depending on who knows what; I would recommend you give it a try, and if the side effects are worse than your medical condition, then talk to your doctor about other alternatives.  2  Asthma Severe pain in left arm and hand, followed by numbness. I was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago with severe asthma. Singulair was among the medications I was given. After a week, I experienced acute pain in my lower arm and hand, followed by numbness. I discontinued my Albuterol nebulizer treatments, but the pain and numbness continued. This left me taking Advair and Singulair. I didn't take either today and there has been no pain, just mild numbness. I'm scheduled for a test on Monday, but couldn't take the pain until then. I'm not sure if the Singulair helped the asthma all that much as I was on so many medications while in the hospital. F 61 14 days

1  inflamed airway Anger, racing thoughts of paranoia, began to feel as I did when first diagnosed with depression which had been under control, but the Singulair seemed to be overriding the Wellbutrin. I also withdrew from my husband and did not "want to be bothered." All side effects went away with 36 hours of stopping Singulair. F 61 4 days

4  Asthma Singulair GENERIC causing frightening vertigo and loss of control. Was prescribed brand Singulair in 2015 for allergy induced asthma/copd. Never had any adverse reaction until a refill by new physcian order generic. Noticed a dizziness after coffee(1 cup) thought coffee too strong. On an evening in November after 1 hr of taking generic notice severe vertigo and loss of control. Felt severely faint and thought I would pass out. Drank copious amounts of water and was better. Next days, I ruled out Caffiene, Motrin(heavy amount due to tooth abcess), alcohol, but still had episodes of vertigo. So I stopped generic and spells stopped!! Recently, due to severe pollen count in NC decided I really needed to be on Singulair. Was having terrible time breathing. I took one of the generics and breathing issue started to calm. Second day took generic, breathing good. Third day, breathing excellent, but Veritgo back!!!! Definitely is the generic version of Singulair, Pill marked " I -114 ". I did not have this problem while on brand Singulair. I also heard sometime in Summer 2018 there was some sort of recall? Any info greatly apprectiated. F 60 4 years

3  nasal allergies It helped my allergies but I developed a sudden severe right elbow/arm pain. It was so bad, I planned on going to the emergency room but after using ice and ibuprofen, and not taking my Singulair, it was better. This is the second day without the drug and my elbow is at least 75% better. It is bearable so I will wait it out. F 60 7 days

2  respiratory allergy This week started seeing, hearing things. Little things. A glance at a thing and I see it wrong, clearly but wrong. A name written down, the time, the sentence someone said I heard completely wrong. She spoke, I heard her voice but the words were not what she said. It was clear too. Am also tired, distracted, just wonkie. Not that good for allergy but can breathe through my nose. Still feels congested, ears still congested. Eyes and ears itch still. Still had to use inhaler during a cold. No sinus infections, though. A blessing but not enough to be on another planet. I am quitting singulair. Going to get allergy shots and use the steroid spray.
