SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Asthma Mood swings, depression, couldn't motivate myself to get out bed, couldn't concentrate, and being in a slow fog with no care. The leg cramps got worse in right leg's knee and hip keeping me from sleeping and pain killers didn't seem to help. Aftestop taking realized it was beneficial to my asthma, but in my opinion not worth the cost. Immediate mental improvement after stopping, but the leg pain is still there. I'm hoping for it to eventually to fade. Doctor, nor pharmacist, ever discussed any side effects. If they had I would've reported the symptoms way before they interfered with my life. F 46 60 days

1  Asthma & allergies Depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, weight gain, loss of interest in everything, no libido - just not myself and so far off from normal me. I didn’t notice significant improvement in my allergies and asthma. I have felt something off in taking this drug and I now realize that it has caused a lot of very serious side effects. I’m seeing very small improvements but have only been off a short time. Very scary. 42 10 months

5  Vertigo None I was having episodes of terrible vertigo. My doctor prescribed Singulair for me. I have COPD but take Advair for that. I'm not sure how this medicine works for vertigo for me, but it does. I stopped taking it for a few nights because I ran out. The vertigo came back. I will never stop taking this medicine it is a God send! F 51 8 months

5  Severe asthma and allergies I am thinking of this as a miracle drug I have mastocytosis and was having severe asthma symptoms and had done a round of prednisone and 3 inhalers for 4 months. Took this and my asthma is so much better I can do what I need and the nebulizer can collect dust again. Yes I am still having mild symptoms and mild joint pain but I can walk and breathe. Have minimal side effects 49 20 days

1  shortness of breath/ asthma This kicked in for my asthma right away, but the side effects were NOT worth it. It started with diarrhea but nothing major. Then i woke up every morning feeling fatigued and hung out as if i didn’t get any sleep at all. Then my mood changed, i was snapping at people and becoming irritable so easy, i got depressed. I already have anxiety and it was under control but this just sent it into over drive. Panic attacks all the time, everyday was a blur. DO NOT TAKE THIS! i don’t know why it’s even on the market especially for children and teens. i took it for a month and stopped and i feel better but i’m still recovering. Research what this drug does to people before you take it don’t make my mistake. Had some strange vivid dreams also. F 18 1 months

4  Asthma Singulair GENERIC causing frightening vertigo and loss of control. Was prescribed brand Singulair in 2015 for allergy induced asthma/copd. Never had any adverse reaction until a refill by new physcian order generic. Noticed a dizziness after coffee(1 cup) thought coffee too strong. On an evening in November after 1 hr of taking generic notice severe vertigo and loss of control. Felt severely faint and thought I would pass out. Drank copious amounts of water and was better. Next days, I ruled out Caffiene, Motrin(heavy amount due to tooth abcess), alcohol, but still had episodes of vertigo. So I stopped generic and spells stopped!! Recently, due to severe pollen count in NC decided I really needed to be on Singulair. Was having terrible time breathing. I took one of the generics and breathing issue started to calm. Second day took generic, breathing good. Third day, breathing excellent, but Veritgo back!!!! Definitely is the generic version of Singulair, Pill marked " I -114 ". I did not have this problem while on brand Singulair. I also heard sometime in Summer 2018 there was some sort of recall? Any info greatly apprectiated. F 60 4 years

1  Asthma Vivid nightmares, Very Fatigued , Mood swings, Foginess, Loss of concentration especially at school, , Redness & puffiness of the eyes, Bad Headaches.....Loss of interest, vitality... Very upset not advised by Paediatrician of possible side affects, he strongly recommended, no medical instructions in the packet.. ...Searched Singular on the Internet it all makes sense now... Dr's etc, should have a duty of care to advise patients of possible side affects... These side affects are real & Singular should not be given to children, research has shown children's brains are not fully developed til early twenties, what sort of damage is this drug doing to children's long term physiological state.. I find this very disturbing & cannot fathom how pharmaceutical companies can 100% assure there is no long term harmful affects to children's brain from taking this drug.. I find it totally immoral and disturbing that companies take greed & profits over children's physiological & long term health. F 13 15 days

3  Heavy smoker which leads to asthma Extreme intolerance to heat (and somewhat to cold), hot flashes/flushes, sweating profusely, heat rash to the face and upper body, feverish symptoms. Have been taking singulair for about 12-18 months on and off for a persistant smokers cough/phlegm issue that leads to asthma. I have been consistently taking it for about 4 months now and the above side effects are unbearable, especially when trying to work and be professional while your skins on fire and your sweating so much you need to change your clothes. I am ceasing this medication today and hoping these symptoms go away. I also take a contraceptive and an anti psychotic med and have thyroid issues so I cannot put this down to Singulair, but will report back after 2 weeks. F 27 1 years

1  Severe Allergies & Ear fullness SEVERE TOOTH PAIN/DECAY, GUM ABCESSES, JOINT PAIN, WAKING UP FEELING HUNG OVER/EXHAUSTION I had been taking the generic form called Montelukast. Toward the end of 2018, my pharmacy informed me that they were using a different maker called "CAMBER" & to let them know how it was was working out. They are pink hexagon shaped tablets. After over a month later, I noticed that my molars were hurting. Started out as a deep ache, then turned into swollen gums at the base of the aching tooth. It felt like a raging tooth ache with an abcess. There was a foul discharge when I popped the bubble in the gum line. First my right lower molar, then my left one started to act up. I had zero issues up until shortly after the new generic change. Made an appointment with my dentist, he exrayed my teeth & didn't really note anything serious, other than a slight foggy area at the base. There were no cavities or abcesses. I explained how it was excruciating to bite down or chew, and I couldn't handle the pain anymore. It was the most uncomfortable thing ever. I stopped the medication a month ago and I started to feel better physically. I wasn't waking up feeling hung over, or experiencing joint pain & weakness. My right tooth started to feel better after a few weeks, my left molar seems to be less sensitive. I googled these symptoms, and discovered that they were reported side affects of Singulair. The prior brand of Montelukast did help with my allergies tremendously, however, I did notice the body aches, exhaustion & irritable mood. I didn't coincide this medi F 53 3 years

1   Sore teeth, headaches, tummy aches, uncontrollable anxiety and obsessive thoughts, bouts of anger, bouts of crying, depressed thoughts. My son had been taking this medication for several months and it appeared to be helping his asthma greatly. About 3 months in we noticed a change in his behaviour which started with obsessive thoughts about things that could harm him- I put it down to changes at home however things got a whole lot worse to the point where he’s saying horrible things about himself, he’s constantly worried about things harming him and he lashes out or bursts into tears at the slightest issue. I have stopped this medication 4 days ago and I’m praying all these horrible side effects start to disappear and we get our boy back. DO NOT GIVE THIS TO YOUR CHILDREN!!! M 5 4 months

1  Allergic Rhinitus I was given the generic drug, Montelukast, which made me feel ill and made my allergy symptoms worse. I had already had some dizziness due to my allergies, I can’t take the any of the antihistamines so my ENT doc put me on this. At first I thought it was helping, but now I realize the only reason I felt better for the first few days was because I was also on a Medrol dose pack, which always makes me feel better. Over the course of the following two weeks after I completed the dose pack, I steadily felt worse and worse, with considerable nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, exhaustion, chills, low back pain, stuffy nose, and increased dizziness. Even though I had read over the possible side effects when I started the Montelucast , I guess I never believed I would have them and they were in the beginning quite insidious. I finally realized how horrible I was feeling, to the point I could barely function two days ago, and a light bulb went off. I read over the side effects again and bingo. I stopped the drug night before last, dizziness is less, stuffy nose is better, nausea and back pain are gone. I’m still very tired, but that could be partially due to lack of sleep last night. I’ve never experienced side effects this bad from any drug I’ve ever taken. I’m not sure how something this bad could be good for anyone, even if they don’t have side effects, makes me question what could it cause long term? F 62 22 days

1  Allergy and Child Asthma Preventive Hallucinations, Night Terrors, Aggression, Screaming at night SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE MARKET. My 20 months old has been having night terrors for about 4 months now and hallucinations this past month. Her grandmother started researching singulair and found the link to hallucinations and night terrors. I have completely stopped giving her this medicine. I can't believe Pediatricians are prescribing this drug to children with these types of side-effects. Every child is different but the risk of a child having hallucinations is not worth it. I wish I caught this earlier. Now I need this medicine to get out my baby's system. F 1.5 6 months

2  Allergies/asthma After 8 days, I was experiencing stomach pains and mild diarrhea. After 10 days, I woke up with extreme abdominal pain. By midday of day 10 I had join pain, headache, chills......flu like symptoms. I was already concerned the Singulair might be causing the stomach issues, so I did not take it that night. I woke up in the morning feeling about 75% better. Just a mild stomach ache remained. I also had an eye appt that next day. During the glaucoma screen I pressented with high pressure readings which I had never had before. I looked it up and found there's a link to Singulair and Glaucoma. I have completely stopped taking this medication. F 51 10 days

3  asthma Joint pain, bursitis, racing mind, trouble sleeping Yes, you read it correctly, on Singulair for 18 years, then the generic aka Montelukast for the past 5 of those 18 years. Have been off of it for 30-days and joint pain is next to nothing. I can sleep through the night!!! It should have been a red flag to me and my doctor when shortly after getting on Singulair in 1999 that I developed bursitis in my shoulders, symptoms of arthritis, and an extremely racy-spacey-dark-thoughts mind. For years I was on Vioxx to ward off the pain - until it was taken off the market. Also, to deal with the brain fog/racy-spacey mind was put on Adderall and was on it for 10-years. I found a new pulmonary doctor and he put me on Arnuity. (FYI, when my asthma was not bad I would split my pills to 5mg and at times down to 2.5mg but could not totally be off of Singulair/Montelukast without the asthma coming back.) F 57 18 days

4  Asthma It did stop my very severe asthma attacks, but I did have side-effects. Immediately after taking the first dosage, I experienced deep sleep with "REM" / "rapid-eye-movement" stage and vivid PLEASANT dreams. Dosage is taken before bedtime with a glass of water. I experience frequent night-time urination; 2 or 3 times sometimes, but occasionally not at all. But, I wake completely rested regardless! That's probably due to the induced deep sleep. I also get mild night-time leg cramps probably due to the diuretic effect of the drug causing the dumping of water. In addition, I experience darkened urine and heart palpitations with pounding beats. Otherwise, I feel fine. Very recently, My doctor detected a "very significant" heart murmur and I am about to be tested for that. This is in-spite of having detailed examinations six (6), nine (9) and eleven (11) months ago without any any such detection; or ever. None-to-"significant"! So, that is what drew me to this website, to see if anyone else has experienced heart valve damage from using Singulair or its generic formula. 68 6 months
