SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Mild asthma, post-nasal drip Rage, anger, dizziness, anxiety, depression, migraines, muscle weakness, unexplained bruises, confusion, feeling too hot, feeling too cold, more infections, ear pain, sinus pain, flu-like symptoms My doctor convinced me when I first started taking Singular that it could not possibly be the medication causing me to have a variety of side effects like anger, rage, dizziness, muscle weakness, etc. Over time the side effects got worse. I went to a Psychiatrist 6 months after starting Singular and got prescribed an SSRI to help with anxiety. This helped for a while. After taking Singulair for 4 years, it suddenly got worse. I was convinced there were voices inside my head telling me to move (I moved across the country), but side effects didn't stop until I stopped the medication. It's been 4 days since I stopped Singulair, and still don't feel normal. So please, if you're considering this medication please be careful and let someone know that this medication can have certain effects on your mental well being. In my opinion, Singulair/Montelukast should be taken off the market for most situations. M 33 4 years

1  Allergies Depression, Anxiety, Suicidal thoughts, aggression, nightmares I knew the side effects even before I started taking this, and I'm glad I knew because I would have stayed taking this medicine and it would've been torture. I quickly began to feel sad and it was a constant feeling. I couldn't even be around family or friends because I would just begin to cry. I also have been fighting more recently with my boyfriend. The first 3 days I took this medicine I have had the worst nightmares of my life. Keep in mind that I have never suffered from any mental illnesses, but this pill really changed the way I viewed my life and I will never be taking this again. F 18 5 days

1  Severe allergies Terrible ear aches. Eyes hurt, cheeks and teeth hurt. Frequent UTI's, increase of anxiety, heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Felt like I was loosing my mind. Went off it today, my Doctor doesn't think it is the Singulair. I do! He will see once I am all better! Wish I had never touched the stuff! F 66 2 years

1  Severe allergies Tremors, fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, HAIR LOSS, auditory hallucinations, sleep disturbances, weird dreams, irritability/aggression, no sex drive I started taking Singulair in conjunction with Allegra due to severe allergies. The first 2 weeks I started taking it, it was great. Took away my nighttime nasal stuffiness, made me sleepy enough to actually fall and stay asleep. My only complaint then was no matter how much I slept at night I always woke up so incredibly fatigued the next day. Over the remaining 2 weeks I have developed all the other symptoms I mentioned above. My anxiety was getting so bad it would wake me up in the middle of the night mid panic attack. I started to hear songs in my head on repeat, some that I had heard recently, some I hadn't heard in years. And no matter what I tried I couldn't get the auditory hallucinations to stop. I became increasingly agitated and irritated, to the point I was kind of afraid to be around my family because I was afraid I would snap on them for no reason. Completely unexplainable stomach pain. Went to my family doctor because I was convinced I had either a UTI or an appendicitis. She ruled out both and said the singular would not cause symptoms like that. Went to my OBGYN and got an ultrasound because I thought I may have had an ovarian cyst, nope. Completely unexplainable stomach pain that bothered me almost 24/7. And right at the month mark of taking this medication my hair started falling out in handfuls and I was afraid to take showers. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICATION. F 30 1 months

1  Seasonal allergies Anxiety, psoriasis, rage, low testosterone, suicidal thoughts. DO NOT take Singulair! I was prescribed this for years to help with seasonal allergies, chronic sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis, whatever you want to call it. As the years went on I started being controlled more and more by my emotions. I developed a skin rash all over my body that looked like psoriasis. My testosterone also tanked to clinically low levels. Three weeks after quitting Singulair all of this started to disappear. I have now been off singulair for 5 years and consider it a life-changing decision for the better. Please do not take this, especially if you are considering it for a child. The mental damage is not worth it! M 29 6 years

1  Asthma Depression DO NOT TAKE! ITS NOT WORTH WRECKING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH JUST TO BREATH. For 2 years and 9 months I was fine, but in August of last year I noticed I was depressed feeling (totally unlike me!) Didn't really link it to anything other the pandemic. Nope. Continued to get more depressed. Planning on discussing with my pulmonologist on safely discontinuing this drug! F 28 3 years

1  Allergies Our daughter was prescribed this drug by her pediatrician at 7 yrs of age for seasonal allergies. Within the first week she was having intense nightmares and then began experiencing mood changes, intrusive and suicidal thoughts and ocd, as well as severe abdominal pain over the next few months/yrs. Before taking this drug our daughter was an extremely happy, healthy child without a trace of any of these aforementioned conditions. We questioned our pediatrician multiple times regarding Singulair as the cause of the symptoms, which he dismissed. We kept her on the drug because of this and for the fact it helped with her allergies - for 2 yrs. This was back in 2005-2006 before the black box warning was issued. Our daughter is now 23 yrs old and has lingering side effects from this poison including intrusive thoughts, ocd, nightmares and abdominal issues. She has managed these through therapy, ssri's, watching her diet and continued support from her family. We still regret the day we ever It seems some have taken this drug with little to no negative side effects. After countless hours of research we have found that perhaps one reason is due to a correlation between montelukast and a mutation in the MTHFR gene (which our daughter has) affecting folate and B vitamin assimilation.  1  Asthma My daughter was on this medication for 20 days, her behavior changed almost immediately, throwing fits that were not normal 3 year old fits, I had to pick her up from daycare 3 different times for being mean to other kids and just being completely out of control, the last episode was completely horrible. The daycare recorded her and I could not even believe that it was my child she was so angry and aggressive throwing chairs across the room. After it was over with she was crying and apologizing saying she did not know why she did it, and it is not fair. We stopped the medication last night so hopefully she will get back to normal.  1  Urticaria/food allergies Developed constant headaches and severe lower abdominal pain the first night of taking. Spent the next three days in bed with abdominal pain, sleeping about 18 hrs a day. Went to urgent care center for the abdominal pain, thinking maybe it was a terrible UTI. Had a UA done - nothing. They had no answers. Day 4 came and I didn't take the meds, started feeling better within hours. The rash, the reason I started taking this drug, Montelukast, got worse in the three days I took it. Seems like I was prescribed this in almost an off label manner for a rash that my allergist thinks might be food related. With the horrid side effects of this, I'd rather live with the rash. 53 3 days

1  Severe allergies Singulair (an allergy medicine) caused me to have suicidal thoughts and I put a fork to my throat this morning over something stupid and my mom talked me out of it. I'm not the suicidal type and Singulair almost made me take my life. I also have had aggression, worse depression, rage, and not giving a rats booty on what I say to anyone. I talked to my mom like she was a dog and I'm not that kinda person. I even cussed my own husband out a couple times. I would NEVER talk to anyone like that! I was literally scared of myself. I even broke something of my great great grandmothers and it was one of the last objects my mom had of hers. I'm not the violent type at all. I'm hoping within a few days I can start feeling better. This medicine needs to be taken off the market. F 28 40 days

1  Mild Allergies (Headaches) Pain in left leg on the upper inner thigh I went to the doctor to figure out what could be the cause of persistent headaches everyday. My doctor prescribed me montelukast being that I don't take any allergy medicine. I've taken the medicine for 2 nights and on the second night my left leg got so tired and I had a restless night because I couldn't get my leg to stop hurting or feeling tired. 4 days later I cannot walk without my left leg hurting nor can I lay down without it hurting. When I try to stretch it out it causes more pain. I do not recommend this medicine to anyone. F 25 2 days

1  For MCAS I took it in the evening. Had stomach pain falling asleep and felt queasy, but that isn't unusual for me. Woke up at 5am and sprang out of bed, ran to the bathroom. Was in there for 5 hours, puking, diarrhea, horrible nausea, stomach pain, anxiety, etc. i have a fear of vomiting so it made it worse too. The weirdest thing is that i has to take off my clothes and get my body freezing cold to make the nausea better. I took a bath at one point once i was feeling better, getting hot again started everything all over again. It is 11am now, as long as i keep myself freezing cold (muscles shaking and hurting level of cold) then I don't puke. I am utterly miserable. My body has been so cold for so long because that is the only thing that helps. I have never experienced anything like this before. I am disappointed because I really wanted this med to work. It is important to mention that i have digestive track paralysis and my reaction to this med may have been a lot stronger because of my pre existing disease. Don't let it completely deter you, because the side effects may not be as bad for someone else. F 22 1 days

1  allergies/asthma severe stomach pain, vomitting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, mental confusion, brain fog, memory issues, word retrieval issues, depression, lack of empathy, no desires(sexual and physical touch), isolation, fatigued, no sleep, nightmares, and hopelessness. Do not take this medicine!!!! It changes your quality of life and you don't even know why or how it happened. I found out when I was checking singulair's interaction with supplements I was going to take to help with my brain issues and found this site and saw the same symptoms happened to other people. I have since stopped this med and in 2 days my brain issues started improving in addition I'm happy again....... F 52 8 months

1  Asthma Depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, decreased mood for many many years, weigh gain (unable to lose any weight), self harm. This medication has helped my asthma, yes.... but it is not worth the declining mental health and weight gain it has caused me.... the anxiety attacks, depressive episodes, weeks of staying up til 3 or 4 am from insomnia, the difficulty losing weight but overall the loss of myself and who I was before this medication is what hurts the most.
