SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Severe asthma and allergies I am thinking of this as a miracle drug I have mastocytosis and was having severe asthma symptoms and had done a round of prednisone and 3 inhalers for 4 months. Took this and my asthma is so much better I can do what I need and the nebulizer can collect dust again. Yes I am still having mild symptoms and mild joint pain but I can walk and breathe. Have minimal side effects 49 20 days

4  asthma Had headaches at first but after about 5 days they went away Sinus inflammation Regular use of singulair keeps me from having to use my rescue inhaler as often. It reduces my lungs' reaction to triggers that usually bring on an asthma attack. I do think it causes my sinuses to be slightly inflamed most of the time but it's a good trade-off. 64 10 years

4  Asthma It did stop my very severe asthma attacks, but I did have side-effects. Immediately after taking the first dosage, I experienced deep sleep with "REM" / "rapid-eye-movement" stage and vivid PLEASANT dreams. Dosage is taken before bedtime with a glass of water. I experience frequent night-time urination; 2 or 3 times sometimes, but occasionally not at all. But, I wake completely rested regardless! That's probably due to the induced deep sleep. I also get mild night-time leg cramps probably due to the diuretic effect of the drug causing the dumping of water. In addition, I experience darkened urine and heart palpitations with pounding beats. Otherwise, I feel fine. Very recently, My doctor detected a "very significant" heart murmur and I am about to be tested for that. This is in-spite of having detailed examinations six (6), nine (9) and eleven (11) months ago without any any such detection; or ever. None-to-"significant"! So, that is what drew me to this website, to see if anyone else has experienced heart valve damage from using Singulair or its generic formula. 68 6 months

2  for asthma my son who is 6 was put on this medication. He has a mild case of asthma which usually result in hard time breathing a few times a month. We used this medication for about a month and a half and the case of his asthma increased dramatically. We took him off of it and he was having breathing problem almost daily if not every other day for a month or so. We did not want to put him back on this medicine any longer and we treated his breathing problem with nebulizer which usually took only one treatment per case. Eventually his daily breathing stopped and now he's back to where he was before. It has been close to a month that he has not had a case of breathing problem so far. 1.5 months

1  asthma My 9 year old son took singulair for about four months. During this time he has been moody, agitated, depressed, and aggressive. He was getting into fights at school. He made comments of hating himself, and wanting to die. He would say he felt blah blah. He said I will just kill myself right now. It has been such a scary time for us. He was seen by the school counselor and I was getting ready to seek aditional counseling services. I was really afraid that my child was becomming mentally ill. As summer approached I took my son off of singulair. Then all of a sudden my child was back to his happy self. I then heard about the side effects of singular and realized that all of his emotional and behavior difficulties were a side effect of singulair. 4 months

1  cold enduced asthma My son would cry and say everyone hated him and he wanted to die. He had singulair befor, but only at a week at a time. So his doctor thought it was not the singulair. This was the 1st time I thought, I shoud do what my doc says and give it to him everyday, so i actuall kept giving my son the meds for another month! After we stopped the singulair and it got out of his system he went back to being his normal self. 6 2 months

1   I find it interesting the 2 posts below this one. Both female, both on Singulair for "about" 7 yrs., both give Singulair a rating of 5 and both just about the same age. How Odd. If there are no side effects for "these" women then why look them up in the 1st place? Lets take a guess at what drug company she works for (I say she and not "they" with conviction). Just a thought.

1  Asthma/prevent colds The most serious problems were severe depression (one suicide attempt), anxiety, and violent tendencies (I had to be kept away from disciplining my pets, for example). I would recommend that anyone who takes this drug be aware of the potential side effects. These side effects were *not* listed on the drug insert when I first started taking it in 2006, and I did not check any of the new ones, thinking I had read it all before. 3 months after I started taking singulair, I sought help for psychological issues and was on anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds for about 2 years, consequently. My docs thought my psych. problems were just a delayed reaction to my father's death 2.5 years earlier. Turns out, it was the singulair. Luckily, I figured out the cause was singulair when I developed GERD and the new doc I was seeing asked me to research all of my FOUR medications I was taking a day (2 of them to offset the problems with singulair that I was not aware of) to see if any could be the cause. I found out about the problems others were having and quit taking all my meds 2 months ago. I finally feel like myself, again. Be informed, people, and parents, pl 28 2 years

1   3 yr old. Same bad side effects as other children. Mood swing, nasty, beligerent, challenging every thing you say. Terrible pain in legs and feet. Took him off it. It took about 3 months for the leg pain to completely go away. But his mood change is still hanging on. He was on the drug for about a year and a half. Has been off for about 4 months. How long do the symptons last. Does anyone know? 16 months

1  Asthma & allergies Depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, weight gain, loss of interest in everything, no libido - just not myself and so far off from normal me. I didn’t notice significant improvement in my allergies and asthma. I have felt something off in taking this drug and I now realize that it has caused a lot of very serious side effects. I’m seeing very small improvements but have only been off a short time. Very scary. 42 10 months

1  Asthma It worked for my breathing and it was such a relief I thought it was the magic pill. Then the fatigue kicked in, then the constant dreaming and waking up feeling like I never slept. Then I became severely depressed. I felt suicidal and anxious, I still call my husband crying at work. I’ve been off of it for almost a week and it is awful. I want to feel better but the symptoms ebb and flow and come out of nowhere. It starts with a headache and then bam, I’m feeling like I’m going crazy and don’t see a point in life anymore. Unless your life depends on this drug DO NOT TAKE IT! And for the love of anything DO NOT GIVE THIS TO CHILDREN! I am wondering if I will ever be the same again. One of the worst experiences of my life. 42 2 weeks

1  Urticaria/food allergies Developed constant headaches and severe lower abdominal pain the first night of taking. Spent the next three days in bed with abdominal pain, sleeping about 18 hrs a day. Went to urgent care center for the abdominal pain, thinking maybe it was a terrible UTI. Had a UA done - nothing. They had no answers. Day 4 came and I didn't take the meds, started feeling better within hours. The rash, the reason I started taking this drug, Montelukast, got worse in the three days I took it. Seems like I was prescribed this in almost an off label manner for a rash that my allergist thinks might be food related. With the horrid side effects of this, I'd rather live with the rash. 53 3 days
