4  Asthma I am taking the generic of Singular, (Montelukast). Initially it seemed to be working OK, but for the past few weeks have had muscle pain in my lower back that made it hard to walk, but eventually that weakened and was better. I thought that this was the Magic Bullet for Asthma, since initially all my Asthma symptoms disappeared. It was only after taking it for somewhat over a month that these lower back pains surfaced. I bought a massage pad to help alleviate the problem, but it keeps recurring. I am on the verge of discontinuing since it causes pain each and every day especially in morning. I am taking Aleve twice a day and that seems to help. I was taking Statins in the past, and that also caused serious muscle aches that went away after I stopped. Hope the pain goes away after I stop taking Montelukast. M 80 50 days

5  rhinitis Sleeplessness and vivid dreams, switched from night to morning dosing and side effects eliminated probably due to peak serum effect occurring during the day instead at night. Allergies well controlled and sleeping much improved due to a reduction of sleep apnea snoring. M 75 60 days

1  have had unpleasant reaction to in After only 6 doses awoke with excruciating jaw pain which required pain meds to function the rest of the day. No positive results are worth this kind of pain. I can live with this little shortness of breath better than this.....can only hope this gets out of my system quickly! F 75 6 days

3  asthma/allergies extreme constipation, serious dry mouth, could not sleep more than 15 minutes at a time without drinking water. The first two or three days on singulair I thought it was a wonder drug. Suddenly I realized that I was hardly sleeping and when I did sleep it was for short times. The constipation kept me feeling full and uncomfortable. I had leg cramps at night. I stopped taking it about a week ago and I am my normal self again. I sometimes wonder if a smaller dose (i.e. 5mg. a day) would be better for me. But I am not sure that I am willing to try it. F 73 2 weeks

2  Nasal congestsion I have a lot of nasal congestion that is the result of inhalers I use for my COPD. Generic Singulair was prescribed to help the sinus congestion. It did improve the sinus congestion a lot and it also helped my breathing to some extent. But I started having heart palpitations as soon as I started taking it, was always tired and sleepy (was sleeping as much as 12 hours a night), had hip pain, lower back pain, pain and tightness in my thigh muscles, and after three days I started getting very irritable. I decided to stop taking it after three days because the side effects outweighed the benefits. M 73 3 days

1  Asthma Depression, loss of mental clarity, memory problems, inability to focus and concentrate, huge weight gain, bloated, look pregnant, heartburn, severe shortness of breath, lethargy, lack of interest in anything The mental and emotional suffering - not overstated - makes singulair not worth any possible benefit. I had to leave my work because of severe shortness of breath. Have been seeing a psychiatrist who has me on antidepressants and something to keep me awake during the day. Another doctor has me on something to control the restless-leg syndrome that another singulair patient mentions. My weight gain probably contributes to my depression, and my distended abdomen probably interferes with my breathing. The 5 years I've been on singulair have been miserable. I am so thankful to have found this site. Today is April 3, 2008, and last night is the last time I will take singulair. I can't wait to see how I will be next week, next month. F 73 5 years

1  asthma, COPD Depression, weight gain (40 lbs. in 4 months), restless leg syndrome, mental fogginess I wrote on April 3, 2008, and mentioned that the previous night would be my last dose. It's now a little over 3 months later, and I have lost 20 pounds and don't need the antidepressant, restless leg, and "wake-up" meds. Am desperate to find something now to help my breathing, but I'll NEVER take singulaire again. F 73 5 years

1  allergies Had severe acid reflux. Had no idea it was linked to this medication. Took this medication for 3 years and I stopped taking it because of the cost and noticed within a week the acid reflux was gone. I had been taking 40mg of protonix twice a day and it did not even help. I had never had any problem in all my life, not even gas or burping. This was a horror!! F 72 3 days

1  Allergies Severe paranoia, delusions, frightening experiences , believed a dead body was buried in the backyard , believed people are listening to telephone conversations. Changed telephone number 3 times. Believed some body was injecting me with poisons at night. Believed neighbors are coming in to the house through the attic . Believed relatives are against me. Called 911 multiple times . Had all locks in the house on a holiday by paying extra to locksmith for emergency lock change 1400.00 dollars. Symptoms continued after stopping the drug. This could be a very harmful drug for some people. Unless you are already on it with no problems no one should start new on this drug as who will get side effects cannot be predicted. F 70 4 days

1  Chronic Bronchitis Irregular heartbeat, heart rate that varies from a low of 68 BPM to 160 over a 24-hour period, weight gain, inability to concentrate I never connected Singulair to any of these symptoms until I was sent to a cardiologist for high blood pressure (my normal blood pressure is low) and a very high heart rate. After a thorough heart work-up, my cardiologist could not find a reason for the symptoms and suggested that Singulair was the problem. I have now gone off the drug and will see if it makes a difference. F 69 2 years

4  Asthma It did stop my very severe asthma attacks, but I did have side-effects. Immediately after taking the first dosage, I experienced deep sleep with "REM" / "rapid-eye-movement" stage and vivid PLEASANT dreams. Dosage is taken before bedtime with a glass of water. I experience frequent night-time urination; 2 or 3 times sometimes, but occasionally not at all. But, I wake completely rested regardless! That's probably due to the induced deep sleep. I also get mild night-time leg cramps probably due to the diuretic effect of the drug causing the dumping of water. In addition, I experience darkened urine and heart palpitations with pounding beats. Otherwise, I feel fine. Very recently, My doctor detected a "very significant" heart murmur and I am about to be tested for that. This is in-spite of having detailed examinations six (6), nine (9) and eleven (11) months ago without any any such detection; or ever. None-to-"significant"! So, that is what drew me to this website, to see if anyone else has experienced heart valve damage from using Singulair or its generic formula. 68 6 months

3  Asthma Only been taking this for 6 weeks. After about 5 weeks it shifted my sleep patterns by 3 hours earlier. For years I would go to bed at 2330 and wake up at 0915. Now I am in bed at 2030 and wide awake by 0630. This is not necessarily a bad thing except my dreams seem to be more vivid and unusual. Seems to be an uptick in libido which is consistent with others reporting emotional and hormonal issues. It helped my asthma somewhat. Prescribed by the VA--I am a veteran. I am appreciative of this site for the user information submitted. M 68 6 weeks

2  asthma cramping and pain in lower back This medicine relieved my asthma symptoms but unfortunately while taking the medicine I experienced intense lower back pain and cramping. I went off the medicine; the pain went away. I tried the medicine again and the pain came back so I stopped taking it altogether. I'm sad about it because it clearly relieves the asthma symptoms.
