EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  prevent bone loss After telling my new GYN that I was taking Evista she suggested I stop due to research pointing to possible blood clots. I stopped two weeks ago and began having leg pain from hip to foot. I thought I was coming down with the flu. The pain has lessened a bit. On a whim I went online to see what was being reported about the drug. After reading the comments of other Evista users, I wonder if other health problems I've experienced have been due to the drug and not so much just a part of aging. I've had knee pain that comes and goes. My hands are so tender now that I've given up my quilting hobby. I've had serious weight gain in the past two years and some mild depression. It will be interesting to see if quitting the use of Evista improves my health in these areas. I will confess that I've been taking the drug only every other day for a few years out of a mistrust of drugs in general. This is also true of the statins that have been prescribed to me. Now I am wondering if my cholesterol readings were influenced by the Evista. This just confirms my belief that we need to take as few drugs as possible because we just don't know what side effects may be discovered over time. F 64 5 years

1  Osteoporosis None After taking this medication religiously for two years my follow-up bone scan showed my bones had not improved at all. I contacted the Eli Lilly company just wanting to speak with somebody and all I get is a return email with the runaround. Very poor customer service and very poor interest in the outcome of their medication. F 65 2 years

1  pre-osteoporosis and breast cancer Horrible leg pain when standing, sitting in a chair, and it got worse at night. I teach school and could not stand. I had to prop my left leg up. Finally one day at the breakfast table my husband was looking at the sheet of side effects that came along with the medication. He asked me if I had read it and of course I hadn't. I just trusted the doctor -- I trust none of them anymore. Thrombosis, elevated blood pressure, and leg and bone pain were side effects. My doctor put me on another kind of pill and the same thing happened. Finally, I switched doctors and he told me about a common ingredient in all of these bone density meds. I just can't take any of them. So, I will put up with old age and holes in my bones and pray I live as long as my mother who took none of that crap.l F 64 60 days

1  DCIS At first it was fine, no issues. About two weeks into the medication, I noticed pain in my knees really severe, especially when attempting to sit or stand. bending over caused severe pain in my knees as well. Severe pain in the Sacral Iliac joints in my back, radiating down to my thighs. My hips hurt nonstop, and sitting is very painful. For some reason my left hip and leg hurt much worse than the right. Weakness in both legs, night sweats, irritability, at night my shoulders would ache, then as time went on, my upper arms, wrists and even my elbows would throb. The muscles in my thighs ache daily. I'm now having issues with my vision. Depression is setting in, which I'm assuming is the medication, the lack of sleep at night and the fact that I feel miserable. I'm gaining weight slowly but surely. My hands are now starting to hurt. If I make a fist, it's painful. The longer I'm on it, the worst the pain. I was on Tamoxifen for 3 months after I finished radiation and stopped taking it because it drove my blood pressure through the roof. I had horrible joint pain on it as well, among other negative side affects. I was taken off of the Tamoxifen for a month before starting the Evista and I felt great. I'm a paramedic/ volunteer firefighter and I can barely do my job any more. If I don't stop the Evista soon, I fear my quality of life will progressively get worse. F 44 3 months

5  Breast cancer osteoporosis None I could not take tamoxifen, caused heart problems side effects. So thankful for Evista. I believe the reason several drugs for same condition is everyone reacts differently to drugs. What works for one doesn't work for another. Shouldn't pull a drug from the market cause it doesn't work for some people. Because it may be very effective for many others. F 63 1 months

1  Osteopenia Immediately had heartburn and vision flashes. After 4 doses, I started getting a really sore throat, stuffy head, bad headaches, and hoarse. Had constipation and stomach cramp issues entire time, too. Felt irritable and bloated in stomach. I stopped taking after realizing all of these issues were related to drug; at first, I thought I had a cold. This drug should be pulled off the market. F 62 7 days

1  Osteoporosis Terrible cramping of my feet and legs, weight gain, migraine headaches, hot flashes, though post menopausal at the time body felt pre-menopausal. Symptoms were horrible! Though the doctor wanted me to continue this medication, I stopped it nearly 3 years ago. Ever since I have been slowly going through menopause again and it's awful. I have cycles during which I get migraines with nausea and dizziness and nervousness. I am going through menopause AGAIN, and it is extremely difficult. I can't imagine when the effects of this medication will leave my system and why they have remained. I see slow bodily changes that indicate that I am going back to a post-menopause condition but it is happening very slowly. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen? If so, please write on this site and let me know. Thanks! F 73 6 days
