EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3   stabbing shoulder pain and cramping coincided with use of Envista; I can't say for sure they are related but there is NOTHING (not even painful, deep tissue massage) that alleviates the tightness and pain in my shoulders and neck. I have never experienced anything like this before. The night sweats and leg cramps are minor and tolerable compared to the shoulder business. Optimistic about slowing down bone loss (runs in family and hysterectomy 4 years ago probably did not help). I have plenty of history with my doctor and I know I can trust her selection but if this is a side effect, and it does not abate, I will ask for an alternative. F 55

2  osteoporosis I didn't have any side effects since have not taken Evista yet. My estrogen levels are low and it looks like that is the cause of my osteo (very common cause for men). I am trying to work with my Dr. to decide if I would be a good candidate for Evista, considering it's side effects. I know it's not recommended for men, but seems like a safer path to me than bisphosphonates. M 58

1  osteoporosis/dr. recommend took Actonel and Boniva in the past. Had GI/digestive problems. Dr./gyn recommended Evista, but since reading all the side effects in this posting, will not get prescription filled. Will try alternative means. F 47

1  Osteopenia Took Evista for 2 years. It caused 2 large blood clots in my leg. Now I'll be on the blood thinning drug Cumaden for the rest of my life and need to get blood tested regularly. This is a risky drug. F 70

1  Prescribed by Doctor I have been told by my doctor that I could change to Evista or Protos as I have had side effects from taking Actonal for the past 3-4 years. Upon reading comments here the side effects of Evista look just the same. Until I had reasearched both Actonal and Evista I had always thought I was being a hypocondriac complaining of leg cramps, head spins, hearburn, nausea, vomiting, panic attacks, high blood pressure. I had spent so much money going to physio, bowen therapy, leg doctors, as well as my GP, but I had never connected any of these symptoms to Actonal. I am now too scared to fill my script for Evista. When I told my GP my fears she said I has a simple choice - put up with maybe the side effects or dont take the tablets and breaking my hip or neck (I am in a very high risk catgeory) because of my low bone density. I feel another panic attack coming on!!!!! F 60

1  Osteopena Numerous deep vein bloodclots, including bilateral pulmonary blood clots. I will be on coumadin for the rest of my life. I also have polymyalgia rhuematica and am wondering if I got that as a result of my coumadin or evista. I am now on prednisone to eleviate the pain of Polymyalgia rheumatica. I am on a low dose but the pain returns when I try to get off of prednisone. F 77

1  Osteopenia SEVERE right flank pain. I had been through several MRIs, untrasounds, X-rays - you name it - to find out why I (the queen of stoicism) was almost crippled by pain. No answers. Then I bumped into this website and read how many other women had low back pain and it felt like someone had hit me over the head with a mallet. Also Charlie horses, WEIGHT GAIN, heart palpitations, hair loss. I was ONLY taking this stuff because I was encouraged by the fact that it is a cousin of Tamoxifen. Guess that was a lousey reason. I'm done with this stuff as of today. F 63

1  osteoporosis in retrospect I had been having severe calf cramping at night that was not like a previous cramp..It would put my leg in awkward position and the cramps were also on the sides of my legs. I felt that these were advancing stages of my neuropathy of my feet and lower legs due to diabetes type 2. I then began to have knee pain when working out...I took analgesics before I went to the gym but finally the pain broke through them and I had to stop and get physical therapy. Meanwhile my legs were swollen and the calves rock hard. The pain became severe in the popliteal area back of my knee. The red hot poker type...and migrated to the the upper calf. Finally I had an ultrasound and there was (and still is) a clot almost the length of the lesser saphenous vein which travels in the area of my knee and upper calf. Just yesterday I saw my internist who immediastely took me off Evista. As I read other reports on this I am more hopeful than ever that the pain and swelling preceding the thrombo I just never connected Evista to my complaints until yesterday. Time will tell if the connection is valid. I honestly hope it is because I don't want to spend the rest of my life with this discomfort I had been taking Evista for about 2 and a half years. F 68

1  osteoporosis I have been taking Evista and am experiencing prickling sensations all over my skin. The nerves inside my legs feel like they are trembling. Did anyone have this? I have been off Evista for two months and still have these feelings. I am not sure what to do about this. I am not sure if this is related to the Evista or not. How did you get help? What type of Doctor did you see and what did he or she do to help you? Where was your Doctor located/name? I am also taking Fosamax and Zocor. Any chance you are taking these, too, with these problems? I took Evista for 3 months. F

1  GYN suggested after Gale Model I take no medicines except calcium supplements. I have never researched a drug before. Thank you so much for this site. Based on these I won't start Evista, but I am interested in those who have no adverse symptoms for balance. Where are their stories? F 61

1  Doctor Perscribed I researched Osteoporosis medicine, and am glad I did. I decided to go on my own and take womens vitamins, extra calcium; tums are great, oscal and caltrate are good as well. Herbal remedies are good, like horsetail tea, or capsules which are herbs, it is good for building bones, and other herbs as well. Fish oil is good, and vitamin D is great for absorbing calcium. Exercising is great, especially weight bearing exercises. F 56 0 times

1  osteopenia During the brief time I took it, I felt extremely tired the same feeling I had when I took fosomax. My Dr. said claims it's not made with the same components as fosomax. I am going to give her a copy of this web site. I only wished that doctors were more aware of what they so-freely prescribe to their patients. You know that they wouldn't take it themselves. Do they really care about us or maybe the green stuff MONEY! F 65 3 times
