EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Hair Loss NO studies have been done to determine what happens when you take Evista and then need to discontinue the medication. Shame on the manufacturer. This medication acts like an estrogen, so beware. On and then off this medication, you may experience additional bone loss and other unwanted side effects. Also, go online and Google "Evista False Claims" and you'll find a lawsuit stating that this drug manufacturer "had falsely told doctors that Evista could prevent breast cancer" F 63 1 years

1  Osteoporosis None Drug companies are making false claims about this drug. It does not increase bone density and prevent fractures, and many patients have had bone loss while on the drug. F 63 1 years

1  Osteoporosis No real side effects, but the medication DID NOT do anything. The medication DID NOT do anything. Bone density is exactly the same as it was when I started the drug over 1 year ago. Now I am told if I stop the medication - a medication that was supposed to treat bone loss (and did not) - that bone loss will occur. You'll be sorry if you take this medication. Think twice.  1  Osteoporosis Constant mild nausea and occasional vomiting which I never experienced before. Leg pain, increased back pain (I have A/S and R/A which I have been tolerating until Evista). Intolerable constant heat flush, worse than menopause was. Vivid bad dreams, fatigue, depression, irritability. Oh, and no food tastes good but I'm gaining unwanted weight and a muffin top even eating much less than normal. I tried this drug once before a year ago for about 3 months, but found life was not worth living, having to feel so bad and sad. I tried it again per doctor's insistence, but I'm stopping it again. I tolerate Humira and Methotrexate without any complaints, but I cannot tolerate Evista. F 71 2 months

1  Osteoperosis I took it off and on for about 3 years or so. Each time I would take it I had extreme vomiting, diarrhea and nausea that would last for days. So I wouldn’t take it until I was better. Then it would start over. I didn’t connect the two for a while, so I had multiple tests run to see if something serious was going on. All doctors were puzzled. Then one day after taking it after being off of it for months and not having any issues, I took it and within 30 minutes I was vomiting with severe diarrhea again followed by days of nausea. Starting thinking about what I had ate or done differently and the light bulb finally went off in my head. So I talked to my doctor about it and stopped taking it and have never had another episode. It was a horrible experience and a very expensive one as well. F 50 3 years

1  Osteopenia Severe dibilitating headaches on left side of head and behind left eye. Extremely severe hot flashes and sweating with terrible nausea and feeling like throwing up. Numbness on left toe. Skin feels like something is crawling on my legs. Itchy feeling like a yeast infection. Dizzy. Took myself off after two days. Will tell doctor. Felt like a cancer patient on chemotherapy. Horrible side effects. Would rather die than take it again. Will stick with walking for exercise and taking lots of calcium and D. F 56 2 days

1  Borderline Osteo Chest pain, foot cramps, anxiety, irritability, brief spinning sensations lasting a few seconds Chest pain caused me to go to ER because I was so fearful it was a heart attack. Chief complaints were chest/shoulder pain & uncontrollable anxiety. So thankful to have read all these comments. After 10 days, no more! I've stopped this med immediately. F 60 10 days

1  Osteoporosis spinal fracture Headaches, hot flushes, weight gain generally feeling unwell. I was prescribed this drug as an alternative to bisphosphonates as I could not tolerate them. I was very hopeful but soon started feeling generally unwell. I can only assume that Raloxifene is the cause as I was feeling ok before I started taking this drug.. I have decided to stop taking them and hope to feel like ny old self soon. I am concerned about this decision as a do not want another spinal fracture. Spinal fractures are extremely painful..I do lots of exercise and take calcium and vitamin D. Just hope that will suffice. F 75 4 days

1  Breast cancer prevention Dizziness, nausea, left hip and leg pain with mild weakness, headache, rapid heart rate, anxiety, somewhat foggy and forgetful... After lengthy history of abnormal mammograms, and a recent abnormal breast biopsy, my doctor recommended taking evista. Considering the risk, and my doctors promise to back me up 100% if I felt uncomfortable at any time with side effects of this medication, I went forward with this plan of prevention. By the fourth day I noticed I was not getting a good nights sleep, and seemed to be sweating throughout the day, on the fifth night, my heart began pounding as my left leg ached and my left hand had a spasming sensation that I could not control on my own, and I was dizzy even though I was laying down in bed. I will not take another dose. I cannot imagine what else I would go through if I continue to take this pill for the scheduled five years. F 52 6 days

1  Dr prescription with annual Bones ache. Feel uncomfortable. Diarrhea started this week. Headache. Sleeplessness. I don't have any abnormal bone loss. My bone density test was normal. I don't know why I was prescribed this drug other than i am post menopausal, 59 yrs old and at a Dr office that prescribes this drug "just because I'm an older woman" Does he get a kick back from the drug companies? I'm so glad I found this site. I have been trying to find info on this drug besides the the drug company info. I'm done with this drug and will also find another gyn. Will continue calcium/vit D supplements and do more weight bearing exercise. F 59 1 months

1  osteoporosis extreme hot flashes, felt like I was on fire, foggy thinking, emotional, anxiety, unable to sleep I thought I would try this drug since I could no longer take boniva. It was one of the worse experiences of my life. I was probably allergic to the drug and immediately stopped taking it. It has taken four days to feel normal again and I only took it for two days.  1  Osteopenia and breast cancer Fatigue, jaw clenching, weight gain, loss of motivation, ringing in the ears It took me a while to figure out the correlation between my extreme fatigue, weight gain, mental fog and Evista. I'm simply exhausted and unmotivated. Will discontinue asap. I'd rather take my risk with bone loss than live like this. F 51 2 months

1  Osteopenia, breast cancer Spinning and dizziness, swollen ankles, digestive disorders, achiness, joint pain. I went to physical therapy for months for dizziness with small improvement before looking at my drug side effects. I went off Evista for 2 weeks and have not experienced dizziness since then.I am hoping that the other symptoms will improve in time. F 61 4 years

1  Osteopenia discovered on bone scan Horrible bone pain in arms/back bones, flu symptoms, insomnia, hot flashing worse than menopause, every side effect listed I had with this drug. I am a tough person, never had to go off a prescribed medication ever in my life. Seriously, I had no quality of life left on this horrid drug. I'd rather fall a break a hip than take this miserable drug one more day. I'm gonna up my calcium citrate & D3 and hit the treadmill daily instead. F 64 4 months
