EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Breast cancer osteoporosis None I could not take tamoxifen, caused heart problems side effects. So thankful for Evista. I believe the reason several drugs for same condition is everyone reacts differently to drugs. What works for one doesn't work for another. Shouldn't pull a drug from the market cause it doesn't work for some people. Because it may be very effective for many others. F 63 1 months

5  Breast cancer I had heart palpitations and anxiety for 2 weeks . I stopped taking it for 2 weeks then tried it again . I've put on 20 lbs and can't lose weight. Very forgetful at times. No one mentions vaginal extra dryness front estrogen blocker so sex is difficult also. With 5 breast cancer biopsies behind me I was willing to try evista to stop estrogen... So today I go off 5 years of taking Evista . F 58 5 years

5  osteoporosis None I went through menopause at 45. My mother has severe osteoporosis and I had osteopenia. My doctor decided to try evista for the hormone-like properties and the osteopenia. I have been on evista for eight years. My bone density has improved significantly and I have no side effects. I have had no menopausal symptoms either. My mother was on actonel for twenty five years. Her bone density continually worsened. After several fractures she is on the IV medication which has improved her bone density. I am staying on Evista F 54 8 years

5  Osteoporosis I have not had any side effects so far. I was put on this medication for osteoporosis after being on Fosamax for 2 1/2 years and then no meds for a couple years and then Actonel for only 6 months when my osteopenia progressed to osteoporosis in both hips and spine - both of these biphosphonates terribly aggravated my GERD but only being 51 years old, I asked my endocrinologist if there were any other options left since I didn't want any of the complications associated with osteoporosis at such a relatively young age. She suggested Evista and also said it would have a secondary benefit of breast cancer risk reduction especially in estrogen positive cancers - which I am an almost 10 year survivor - that's how I ended up with osteo (chemo causing chemopause, then a hysterectomy, and then the Arimidex I took for 5 years); she said I'd probably have an easy time with Evista since I tolerated Arimidex well. Hoping I stay side effect free. F 51 23 days

5  Osteopenia At first would get rushes of anxiety occasionally at night while I was sitting watching TV. Went off it, but went back on a few months later. Attacks were much less and now hardly ever have them. Have now been on it for about 5 years. My gynocologist highly recommends it for bones and it's protection against breast cancer. My bones are staying about the same - no real improvement according to scans but not worse. I also am not as good as I should be about taking my calcium. F 62 5 years

5  osteoporosis I really don’t know how to get ahold of the Evista makers, maybe you can forward this to them, I believe in telling people when good things work, I started taking Evista 10 years ago because I had osteoporosis. I have taken it daily for 10 years. Well this year I had a scan done and my osteoporosis is GONE!!!! It has to be the Evista, and I am thrilled!!!!! Thank you for a medication that works so well. My Doctor said they were unsure about Evista, but I am living proof, and she will continue to keep me on it!!!. THANK YOU, Mary Mary Amyot 8177 Trolleys End Cicero, New York 13039 WONDERFUL!!!!!  5  oteoporosis No side effects whatsoever ! My bone density has increased! This is wonderful because I have been losing bone for the last 20 years and I cannot take estrogen because I have had breast cancer. One time I stopped Evista for a week because I was traveling and sitting still much of the time. I had an unusual melancholy/depression that almost ruined my vacation. Next trip, I plan to continue taking it. F 56 3 years

5  osteopenia For the first 3 years I had no side effects. The last two years have been a different story. I have had hot flashes constantly and toe cramps. I stopped taking the Evista for a month and the hot flashes did subside but not disappear. My doctor has prescribed Vivelle dot for the hot flashes and osteopenia. I actually participated in the clinical trial of the medicine in a 2 1/4 year blind study. I asked my doctor to put me on Evista after the trials were over and a year later I found out that I had been receiving the Evista during the study. My bone density has remained constant over the last five years. I had tried Fosamax and it was a horrible experience. I stopped after two doses and went back to Evista. If it wasn't for the hot flashes I would still be on Evista. F 55 5 years

5  as a preventative for breast cancer I've been taking Evista for four years without any side effects. I still have slight hot flashes but I had them before Evista, too. And seeing as I don't have breast cancer(knock on wood)I guess it's working wonderfully! F 55 4 years

5  Osteoporosis I haven't had any side effects. I have only been on the medication for 10 months, so I haven't had a follow up dexa scan to see if it is actually helping the osteoporosis. F 50 10 months
