EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopena Took for 3 days only: numbness and tingling in legs; sweaty hot flashes; these symptoms persist. Three months later I experienced, after most of the night in bed, I would suddenly become cold, shake, then have attacks of terrible leg cramps to where I couln't stand, left leg would turn inward. I take Armour Thyroid--could there have been a reaction? F 57 3 days

1  Osteoporosis After just 1 pill, my eyes begain to swell. I became very nauseated and restless. After reading the ingredients I realized why my eyes swelled. It contains bluelake dye. For people that are sensitive to artificial additives such as me, they should avoid this drug. I have chosen to take natural supplements and exercise. It makes better sence than poisoning my liver and dealing with dangerous side effects. F 54 1 days

1  osteoporosis I have been taking Evista and am experiencing prickling sensations all over my skin. The nerves inside my legs feel like they are trembling. Did anyone have this? I have been off Evista for two months and still have these feelings. I am not sure what to do about this. I am not sure if this is related to the Evista or not. How did you get help? What type of Doctor did you see and what did he or she do to help you? Where was your Doctor located/name? I am also taking Fosamax and Zocor. Any chance you are taking these, too, with these problems? I took Evista for 3 months. F

1  for osteoporosis Took Evista for several months, experienced excruciating leg pain and heart palpitations. Took myself off this medication in September. The palpations went away first, after a few weeks, but it took three months to get over the pain in my legs, mostly at night. Then I decided I would give it another chance a couple of weeks ago. The palpitations began within a few days and the leg pain started about a couple of days later. I took myself off the medication again last night. This medication also affects, blurs my vision. I will never take another evista pill. F 53 6 months

2  prevent bone loss Extreme night sweats, hot flashes. Possibly bone loss. Evista was supposed to prevent bone loss after my hysterectomy and chemotherapy. My bone density has dropped to severe osteopenia, borderline osteoporosis. Pains in leg, hip and neck have become severe. Does anyone know if Evista can cause bone LOSS? F 57 5 years

1  for osteoporosis Severe hot flashes throughout the dayand evening, and night sweats; plus severe leg cramps at night After serious adverse side effects (internal bleeding) from taking Fosamax only twice, my doc switched me to Evista, stating that it is milder. He warned me that the side effects could be hot flashes. Then, upon reading the accompanying flyer from the pharmacist, I learned that additional possible side effects are blood clots (which can cause stroke and kill). Upon further esearch online, I learn that Eli Lilly, the drug company than makes Evista, admitted that the early trials demonstrated that Evista causes ovarian cancer in rats, but discounted this "not being applicable to humans." (You do the math.) Many other sources cite that Evista also causes an increased risk of ovarian cancer (one 2-year study cited an 8% increase) as well as other cancers. I suggest that you do a lot of research on this drug before taking it. F 54 3 days

4  osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for several years. When another bone density score showed no improvement, the doctor prescribed Evista daily along with the once-weekly Fosamax. I've been using it for about 5 days with no negative reaction. Sure hope it works with no miserable side effects.... F 55 5 days
