EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Osteoporosis NO side effects! Contrary to postings here, I have plenty of energy and I am not hungry all the time. I cried when I took the first pill because I had horrible side effects with Actonel. I have had no side effects with Evista so far. With Actonel, it was horrible the first day! Thank God! F 1 weeks

1  osteoporosis I have been taking Evista and am experiencing prickling sensations all over my skin. The nerves inside my legs feel like they are trembling. Did anyone have this? I have been off Evista for two months and still have these feelings. I am not sure what to do about this. I am not sure if this is related to the Evista or not. How did you get help? What type of Doctor did you see and what did he or she do to help you? Where was your Doctor located/name? I am also taking Fosamax and Zocor. Any chance you are taking these, too, with these problems? I took Evista for 3 months. F

2  breast cancer prevention Substantial hair loss; depression; anger issues; hostility; diminished visual acuity; forgetfulness; minor leg cramps I thought I was doing well on Evista---I'm not postmenopausal & experienced no hot flashes or trouble sleeping. I have noticed that my hair is falling out to the point where it is becoming a problem. After having children I've dealt with post-partum depression and have taken meds for that (which don't really help) but now am wondering if Evista is contributing to the depression & anger issues. I'm very forgetful, whereas I used to have the memory of an elephant, not since I started Evista though. I meet with my doctor next week and think I'll get off this stuff. I'm too young to go bald!  2  Premature Ovarian Failure (age 38) I have taken evista for almost 2 years. Never considered it could be making my Fibromyalgia symptoms worse. I ache anyway but recently noticed my legs hurt more than usual, heart rate is much too high, today it was 133 when checked at the local pharmacy. Since 2001 I have gained over 100 lbs, about 25 of that since I started Evista. I feel like I am running a fever most of the time. Often I am running a low grade fever when it is checked at the doctor's office. My legs swell badly some days and I usually take a diuretic (prescribed) to keep the swelling from getting out of control. The only thing that realy helps the swelling is propping up my feet and sleeping. Walking makes it worse. I am a student and I work at a computer. None of my doctors told me about the dangers of sitting too long when taking this medicine. 2 years ago my bone density scans were good. I was put on this medicine to prevent bone loss since I will probably spend +/- 40 years in the post-menapause stage. After reading the comments other women have posted about this medication, I am seriously considering stopping it. Sometimes, the fibromyalgia condition makes it hard for me to tell if a problem is related to a medicine or if it's part of the fibro. Sounds like there are many situations I already have problems with and evista could make them much worse. F 40 2 years

1  DCIS Horrible joint pain, depression, hot flashes, headaches I took Evista for 14 days and was in tears. It made me so depressed. I also had terrible hot flashes. I spent hours in front of a fan to just try to cool down. I became very depressed and was not able to be the mom and wife I need to be. The joint pain was unbearable. My shoulders hurt so bad that I could not braid my daughter's hair. There were several nights that I couldn't make it up the stairs due to hip pain. My wrists and hands hurt so much that I could no longer sew. I have been off for 3 weeks now and still suffer from joint pain. I am hoping it will dissipate, but thought it would by now. The hot flashes are gone, as are the headaches. I would strongly advise all those that are considering taking Evista, consider the side effects. They are very real and cause one to feel much worse. It effects every day life. F 41 14 days

4  Reduce Breast Cancer Probability I went from having too much estrogen to non at all, after my ovaries were removed after having a hysterectomy for uterine fibroids. I had significant skeletal problems, but never made a connection between joint problems and a lack of estrogen. An oncologist suggested this medication, and I must say it has helped me walk better. Honestly, this medication has caused me to feel better. Please pray that BC is not a part of my future. This meedicine is very expensive, but I pray that it will allow me to reduce my cancer risk factors. I have taken it for the fast 2 weeks. F 43 14 days

5  breast cancer prevention I had my ovaries removed because I am at high risk for both ovarian and breast cancer - Evista was prescribed as a preventative for breast cancer with the added benefit of preventing osteoporosis. All of the symptoms I've had really relate to the instant menopause I experienced from surgery. I starting taking Evista 2 months after surgery, and I can't tell that it has added any side effects. Most of the things described here are menopause-like side effects which makes sense since this drug helps block estrogen. I've been able to lose weight on this drug (by watching my diet) - it has not caused me to gain any. The only side effect I've had is the fear generated by reading other peoples' ratings! This drug has not caused me any problems that I can tell. I think rating drugs is a good idea - but take it all with a grain of salt - most of the people who post will post because they don't like a medication not because they think it is okay so you see truly horrific posts here while the majority of people don't have much of a problem so they don't post. I'm not saying that people don't have real problems but you have to put it into proportion. I read this board before taking Evista and it really scared me - I'm sorry I read it first and got all worked up. My doctor told me that this drug is out of your system after 24 hours so if you don't like it, you can go off of it pretty easily. F 44 2 months

3   leg cramps especially at night, pains on veins especially on fingers and feet, sometimes I have abdominal/uterus/cervix pain, minimal leg swelling. You may email me. Can't say if bone density increased after taking Evista because health insurance wont cover for bone scan and osteoporosis meds in my country. After 2 months, pelvic bone pain has decreased. It's a costly drug so I can't maintain it. When I have the money, I take it every other day but take calcium with Vit.D daily. F 44 2 months

1  DCIS At first it was fine, no issues. About two weeks into the medication, I noticed pain in my knees really severe, especially when attempting to sit or stand. bending over caused severe pain in my knees as well. Severe pain in the Sacral Iliac joints in my back, radiating down to my thighs. My hips hurt nonstop, and sitting is very painful. For some reason my left hip and leg hurt much worse than the right. Weakness in both legs, night sweats, irritability, at night my shoulders would ache, then as time went on, my upper arms, wrists and even my elbows would throb. The muscles in my thighs ache daily. I'm now having issues with my vision. Depression is setting in, which I'm assuming is the medication, the lack of sleep at night and the fact that I feel miserable. I'm gaining weight slowly but surely. My hands are now starting to hurt. If I make a fist, it's painful. The longer I'm on it, the worst the pain. I was on Tamoxifen for 3 months after I finished radiation and stopped taking it because it drove my blood pressure through the roof. I had horrible joint pain on it as well, among other negative side affects. I was taken off of the Tamoxifen for a month before starting the Evista and I felt great. I'm a paramedic/ volunteer firefighter and I can barely do my job any more. If I don't stop the Evista soon, I fear my quality of life will progressively get worse. F 44 3 months

1  osteoporosis serious short term memory loss my mother's doctor put her on evista as a preventative measure a couple yrs ago, and she experienced serious short-term memory loss. She was tested for early alzheimers, but they found nothing. Her bone density had always tested as good to normal before the evista. I mentioned her memory loss & being on evista to my OB/GYN, who asked "why in the world would someone put her on evista". She said the Evista could definitely be the cause of her memory loss. We lost about 4 good years with my mother. She has been off for about 3 months, and the short term memory loss has great improved. I thought mom mother was mentally gone for good, it is good to have her back. Mother's age 78. Both doctors said evista should not be used unless it is absolutely necessary. F 45 4 years

1  ductal hyperplasia Extreme itching, some rash areas, face, hip, back. Insomnia, restless leg, shoulder pain, increase in back pain ( I thought it was shoveling snow until I read this site). Vision just today noticeably blurred. The itching is so so terrible! Some headaches, also uncharacteristic for me. I will not be taking any more doses. F 45 3 weeks

1  beginning of spine bone loss breast pain, weight gain, insomnia, tendons hurt, I have sinusitis and won't go away, I got pneumonia, bronchitis, still have wheezing and cough, itching, sweating, my veins hurt, feels like something is rolling around and I can feel it. My doctor does not think it is a blood clot. I hurt, do not think this is a good drug. Nor the other's for a weekly dose or monthly dose. My doctor said this was an old drug used for spines. I had a total hysterectomy 8 years ago due to intense bleeding. F 46 2 years

3  Breast Cancer Preventative After 2 months experiencing slight nausea, minor nuisance. No other negative effects. Runner, very active gal. Premenopausal. Nausea might also be caused by very recent breast cancer related surgeries, pain pills and antibiotics. Going to let these drugs run out of my system before blaming on Evista. F 47 4 days

2  replacement for tamoxifen Mental confusion! loss of sexual feelings/orgasm, very noticeable upper abdominal fat, continued cramping in calves. I had to stop taking Evista because I was making too many mistakes at work. I could not keep anything in my head, like two numbers at a time. I could not concentrate on what I was doing. This was definitely caused by Evista, because my memory improved immediately after stopping the drug. I had tried Evista (raloxifene) as a replacement for tamoxifen because it is preventative for breast cancer, good for bones, possibly good for joints (I was having stiffness in knuckles & feet), and not a uterine lining stimulant (like tamoxifen is). Too bad I had to stop Evista due to its effect of mental confusion. F 47 4 months

1  osteopenia Very bothersome hot flashes (ringing wet), insomnia, irritability. This drug gave me the worst hot flashes ever! I would not recommend taking this unless you live on the tundra and are single. My husband would not put up with the way I treated him while on this drug for more than one week. F 47 4 days

1  Osteopenia Blurred vision, hip pain, forgetfulness, anxiety, nausea and hot flashes. I have had blurred vision for the past two days. After reading the other posts, I now realize that my hip pain, forgetfulness, etc. are due to the Evista. I will NOT take my dose tomorrow or ever again. F 48 17 days
