EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  severe osteoporosis Since taking Evista I have had severe leg cramps, cramps in ankles, feet and toes. It's painful to walk on right foot. I have pain in right leg, and more pain in my back. And I've gained weight even though my eating habits have not changed. I found this web site today and after reading the experiences of others I am convinced Evista is responsible for the discomfort I have. Even though my osteoporosis is severe, I can't put up with the side effects of Evista. So I am quitting today. No point in asking my doctor what to do. She is a pill pusher. F 81 75 days

1  osteoporosis runs in my family Didn't make the connection until I reached this site. Since starting Evista have had BAD leg cramps, problems with acid reflux, hair loss, problems swallowing food, and then WORSE.... trouble getting up from chairs and hardly able to go up or down stairs. MORE WORSE: numbness and stiffness in fingers to the point I can hardly write my name, hard to tie shoes or pick up dropped items. Having trouble peeling and cutting food, have taken two bad falls due to vertigo. Stopped taking Evista when I was planning to go on an extended car trip that involved sitting a lot. The side effects said that was bad. After reading these reports I will NOT go back on it. Ever. Dr. told me to take Boniva, but the side effects of THAT seem even worse! Will have to take my chances as I will NOT take any of these, again. How can 'doctors' prescribe these drugs without looking into the side effects more seriously? I feel ALL these complications in my life, are the result of taking this drug! F 79 4 years

4   My bone scans are excellent, but it seems that Evista has been causing an ever-increasing soreness in my legs (just below the knees), plus a numb toe; and, during the past year or so, I developed tendinitis at both knees (ileo-tibial band). The diagnosis was complicted by the fact that I was also taking Zocor for 6 years (I began taking the two drugs at just about the same time, which made it very hard to diagnose the cause or causes); the Zocor caused increasingly terrible cramps throughout my body even though the blood tests showed no problems. In other words, owing to one or the other drug, Zocor and Evista, for about 5 years I had soreness below my knees for no diagnosable reason, plus spasms all over! Things got better for a few months immediately after I stopped the Zocor (about 5 years ago); but then the soreness just below my knees -- which didn't go away when I stopped the Zocor -- began increasing and got worse and worse, and eventually was complicated by the ileo-tibial infl The trouble caused by Zocor was terrible enough, but Evista was just as terrible, it seems, because it was doing things so silently and sneakily. Combined, the two medications have caused me to reduce my activity for almost 10 years, in hopes of avoiding pain and inflammation. A waste of 10 prime years!!! F 78 9 years

1  Osteoporosis Had every side effect imaginable: Horrible toe and leg cramps, especially during the night; tingling/numbness in ankles and legs; dizziness; feeling of stuffiness in the head, much like an allergy, at any given time during the day; heart palpitations; stomach upset; just an overall strange feeling in the abdominal area, very hard to describe; breast pain; lack of interest in doing anything at all; inability to walk even short distances when before taking the drug I took a 2-mile walk every day; joint pain; swollen ankles; cough; depression; just want to sit and do nothing; weight loss...have lost 20 pounds in the period I've been taking it...down to 118 lbs. Food doesn't interest me though I always loved to cook. I always thought that medications were supposed to increase your quality of life. This one didn't. After taking it for about 8 months I stopped today. If the doctor doesn't like it...tough! F 78 8 months

1  Osteopena Numerous deep vein bloodclots, including bilateral pulmonary blood clots. I will be on coumadin for the rest of my life. I also have polymyalgia rhuematica and am wondering if I got that as a result of my coumadin or evista. I am now on prednisone to eleviate the pain of Polymyalgia rheumatica. I am on a low dose but the pain returns when I try to get off of prednisone. F 77

5  osteopenia None I am very annoyed by Lilly's decision to package Evista in those stupid blister packs, which take five minutes to open (then the pill disappears on the floor) and hurt my thumbs. What in the world was wrong with the loose pills in a bottle? Why add to the rubbish heap another bunch of useless packaging? F 75 6 years

1  Osteoporosis spinal fracture Headaches, hot flushes, weight gain generally feeling unwell. I was prescribed this drug as an alternative to bisphosphonates as I could not tolerate them. I was very hopeful but soon started feeling generally unwell. I can only assume that Raloxifene is the cause as I was feeling ok before I started taking this drug.. I have decided to stop taking them and hope to feel like ny old self soon. I am concerned about this decision as a do not want another spinal fracture. Spinal fractures are extremely painful..I do lots of exercise and take calcium and vitamin D. Just hope that will suffice. F 75 4 days

4  osteopenia hot flashes, stiffness, trouble sleeping, maybe hair loss I am also taking Calcitonin with the evista. I tried Fosamax and Actonel with violent reactions after 2 pills, was afraid of taking Reclast with a year of symptons so that left Evista,I will know in Dec. if it is helping my bone density F 74 4 months

1  osteopenia I am wondering if anyone else has had Reynaud's syndrome symptoms while on Evista. My symptoms were fingers turning white and numb often last winter. I have been off Evista since last March due to surgeries, and chemo for Ovarian cancer. My Reynaud's symptoms have not recurred this winter. In researching Evista recently, I also found that it has been shown on occasion to have some relation to ovarian cancer. I don't plan to take it again. I took it for about a year. I eat properly and exercise and take Calcium with D. Since I had a bad reaction to Fosamax too, I am hesitant to try any of the other medications on the market. I am almost more afraid of the side efects than the osteoporosis F 74 1 years

1  osteoporosis Have experienced numbness at night in both my feet, but most of all my arms and hands are easily bruised, leaving me with ugly purple spots, and the veins on my hands appear to be swollen. I have decided to discontinue use and in just 2 weeks the veins on my hands now look rather normal. Don't know if this is just a coincidence. My dr. doesn't agree with me, says I have fragile capilllaries! I will stay off it til the end of the year and see if there is any improvement. Anybody else have symptons like this? F 74 8 years

3  osteopenia/osteoporosis Awakening at night with excruciating muscle spasms running up and down both legs. I have to drink a liter of tonic water every day to prevent them. Once they start my only relief is sitting in a tub of hot water. Calling these episodes "cramps" is inadequate to the pain. I've read that quinine can be harmful and do not like drinking so much tonic water, but the muscle spasms are unbearable. I told my gynecologist about the spasms and she brushed it off that leg cramps were a side effect. I have had some improvement of bone density in some areas and no improvement in others. F 73 6 years

1  Osteoporosis Terrible cramping of my feet and legs, weight gain, migraine headaches, hot flashes, though post menopausal at the time body felt pre-menopausal. Symptoms were horrible! Though the doctor wanted me to continue this medication, I stopped it nearly 3 years ago. Ever since I have been slowly going through menopause again and it's awful. I have cycles during which I get migraines with nausea and dizziness and nervousness. I am going through menopause AGAIN, and it is extremely difficult. I can't imagine when the effects of this medication will leave my system and why they have remained. I see slow bodily changes that indicate that I am going back to a post-menopause condition but it is happening very slowly. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen? If so, please write on this site and let me know. Thanks! F 73 6 days
