EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Breast cancer, ostiophinna Chest pressure, lethargic, throat feels thick and I'm hoarse. My leg hurts and I feel awful. This morning I felt terrific before I took that med! I will not put that in my body again! What an awful experience! :( F 65 1 days

2  DCIS and osteopenia Okay for first week then irritability, insomnia and depression set in. Became so hoarse I thought I'd contracted COVID though fully vaccinated. Worse, frequent urination like up every hour all night and urinary tract infections which I hadn't had for decades. Had many surgeries in my youth to correct a congenital urinary Tracy deformity and can't take any chances with messing that up. Quit Raloxifene and symptoms cleared up 100% within 2 days. Never again. F 61 3 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Hair Loss NO studies have been done to determine what happens when you take Evista and then need to discontinue the medication. Shame on the manufacturer. This medication acts like an estrogen, so beware. On and then off this medication, you may experience additional bone loss and other unwanted side effects. Also, go online and Google "Evista False Claims" and you'll find a lawsuit stating that this drug manufacturer "had falsely told doctors that Evista could prevent breast cancer" F 63 1 years

1  Osteoporosis None Drug companies are making false claims about this drug. It does not increase bone density and prevent fractures, and many patients have had bone loss while on the drug. F 63 1 years

1  Osteoporosis No real side effects, but the medication DID NOT do anything. The medication DID NOT do anything. Bone density is exactly the same as it was when I started the drug over 1 year ago. Now I am told if I stop the medication - a medication that was supposed to treat bone loss (and did not) - that bone loss will occur. You'll be sorry if you take this medication. Think twice.  1  Osteoporosis Constant mild nausea and occasional vomiting which I never experienced before. Leg pain, increased back pain (I have A/S and R/A which I have been tolerating until Evista). Intolerable constant heat flush, worse than menopause was. Vivid bad dreams, fatigue, depression, irritability. Oh, and no food tastes good but I'm gaining unwanted weight and a muffin top even eating much less than normal. I tried this drug once before a year ago for about 3 months, but found life was not worth living, having to feel so bad and sad. I tried it again per doctor's insistence, but I'm stopping it again. I tolerate Humira and Methotrexate without any complaints, but I cannot tolerate Evista. F 71 2 months

2  Breast cancer prevention I took it for 6 months and then stopped because of side effects such as legs hurting ,terrible tinnitus, insomnia and just feeling lethargic and aching all over. Then I started it again because of fear of getting breast cancer. Took it for a couple of months, same results and stopped it again! I was off it again for a few months and started taking it again. Now I stopped taking it. And this time for good. It is not worth the side effects!! F 66 3 years

2  Severe osteoporosis Hot flushes which were debilitating but worse still the joint and muscle pain and feeling tired and lethargic as though getting flu. Had similar problems with other osteoporosis drugs as was put on this as last resort. I now have to weigh up quality of life now against helping to prevent worse issues in later life but really can't go on like this and feel I will be taking my chances without medications F 64 1 years

1  Osteoperosis I took it off and on for about 3 years or so. Each time I would take it I had extreme vomiting, diarrhea and nausea that would last for days. So I wouldn’t take it until I was better. Then it would start over. I didn’t connect the two for a while, so I had multiple tests run to see if something serious was going on. All doctors were puzzled. Then one day after taking it after being off of it for months and not having any issues, I took it and within 30 minutes I was vomiting with severe diarrhea again followed by days of nausea. Starting thinking about what I had ate or done differently and the light bulb finally went off in my head. So I talked to my doctor about it and stopped taking it and have never had another episode. It was a horrible experience and a very expensive one as well. F 50 3 years
