XENICAL  (ORLISTAT):  This medication is used with a doctor-approved exercise, behavior change, and reduced-calorie diet program to help you lose weight. It is used by certain overweight people, such as those who are obese or have weight-related medical problems. Taking orlistat can also help keep you from gaining back weight you have lost. Losing weight and keeping it off can lessen the many health risks that come with obesity, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a shorter life. Dietary fats need to be broken down into smaller pieces before the body can absorb them. Orlistat works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down fats in your diet. This undigested fat then passes out of your body in your bowel movement. Orlistat does not block the absorption of calories from sugar and other non-fat foods, so you still need to restrict your total intake of calories.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-04-23 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Obesity I started taking Xenical in November, 2014 with the goal of losing 40 pounds. I have lost 35 to date. I have had the usual effects of loose and frequent stools and elimination of oil usually about 48 hours after a high fat meal. Side effects are body doesn't efficiently absorb fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K I have had no diarrhea or other discomfort with this medication. I take extra fibre every day (eg. sprinkle some on my cereal in morning) and before bed I take a multi vitamin and extra vitamin D to give my body the vitamins it may not be absorbing during the couple of hours the drug is effective.  1  obesity All the oily problems already mentioned by others but I never ever lost a pound. It succeeded in my not gaining while on the medication for three years but the side effects are so severe one must wear a pad to contend with it or else have huge orange oil spots on underwear and clothing. Very very embarrassing. I was afraid to stop taking it for fear of gaining more weight - which is exactly what has happened except I am more bloated than ever. I read of others losing weight and am astonished as well as envious because the loss of weight was a moot point with the medication. F 69 3 days

5  50 pounds over weight Just oily stool, if too high a fat intake. But other wise none. I started Xenical 2 weeks ago and have lost 8 lbs. My doctor told me to take it only if having a fatty meal. I take it once a day at dinner. Taking it this way is very cost effective. i get 90 pills for $219.00, but i only will have to refill every 3 months. This drug works for me. F 62 2 weeks

5  weight loss Overeating of fatty foods produce mild cramps and diarrhea, which is what the Dr. warned me about. After taking it, I am losing weight steadily at 1.5 to 2 lbs per week. I am not exercising or walking, but have substantially lowered my caloric and fat intake. I find it to be very useful for weight loss, and if I exercised I think my loss would be greater. I have lost nearly 60 lbs in approx 7 months. F 60 7 weeks

5  assist weight loss bad bad , if you dont stick to the rules," low fat low calories." organge stool, soiled underwear , pressure to go to the toilet, overall not pleasant.... but self inflicted it works, as the side effects encourage you to eat low fay low calorie food. is this not what weight loss is all about, and if you have been a little naughty on you food intake, you can get ride of the extra fat throught the pill F 60 80 days

1  obese due to hypothyroidism Took only 4 days: 1st day oily liquid. 2nd day discomfort, minor cramping and oily stool, urgency to defecate. 3rd day headachy, constipated, irritated anus, stomach upset. 4th day severe headache, vomiting, constipation. Lost entire day, couldn't get up from bed -- severe migraine type headace. My diet has been less than 2,000 calories and low fat for years to control weight due to low metabolic rate. The effects were too strong to warrant my continuing. Perhaps my reaction was more of the alergic type????!!!! Or I simply don't eat enough fat in my diet??? F 60 4 days

3  weight loss oil literally leaking from you know where after a fatty meal, what a mess! Some bloating and gassy tendency. Stains underwear ,wear dark color clothing. Did not loose a lot of weight. One good thing , it does not mess with your brain like most other weightloss products. F 59 2 months

5  weight loss I like this drug; I took it under advisement of my physician who recommended one or two per day. I only took one per day, with my highest fat meal. I had a somewhat loose stool each day but nothing unmanageable or embarrassing. Taking MORE than one pill per day, however, and I had the side effects others have complained of: gas, loose, orange, oily stools that were hard to control. I lost 110 lbs. and have kept off 90 of them. I'm going to take it again to re-lose those pesky 20 lbs. F 58 1 years

3  Lose weight No side effects except the normal stated here - e.g. being caught out once (and only once!!!) when I tried to pass wind while not on the toilet. Worst problem at work was that people kept complaining about the oily residue in the toilet and wanting to know who was leaving it. Finally resorted to using about a quarter roll of toilet paper to seep up the oil and help it flush away. I used Xenical for about 9 months in 2006/2007 and lost 13 kgs. The side effects helped make sure I kept relatively fat free. In fact, I had no side effects for the first 2 weeks. The first time I suffered them was after a night out at a very "high in fat" French restaurant resulting in shocking side effects for the next 2 days. However, I thought I would mention one other possible long term side effect which might or might not be related to Xenical. I am post menopausal and recently my Skin Specialist gave me a Vitamin D blood test as it is essential for promoting calcium absorption in your gut. My reading was sub 40, which was very low, but also highly unusual as I get lots and lots of sunshine (I own a farm and work outdoors most of the day without sunscreen!) and also I eat lots of fresh eggs and tinned tuna and salmon. If anyone should have high D, I should. The only thing we can come up with is my 9 months of Xenical which would have inhibited the absorption of vitamin D as it is fat absorbed and Xenical was getting rid of any excess fat I was intaking. 18 months after ceasing Xenical, I'm now thinking it may still be inhibiting my absorption of vitamin D. Who knows? I'm just throwing it out there as a possible side effect and I would suggest post menopausal women who have taken Xenical for a while, have their vitamin D levels checked to make sure they're OK for absorbing calcium - hopefully to avoid osteoporosis.  2  overweight many years The usual dreaded orange...... but only after two weeks of use? Why not at the beginning? Haven't taken a tablet for 2 days now and still have the orange problems! Has anyone else found this delay? Haven't changed diet. Somebody wrote that if you take it with Metamucil it's much better - how many others feel this is the case? Feel washed out, tired, no great benefit yet. F 58 14 days

3  lose weight oily stool, stomach upset I've been taking Alli for about 4 weeks and have lost about 8 pounds. I've kept my diet very low fat-under 30g a day. I've had the "treatment effects" but I've also developed a very sensitive stomach. I easily get a stomach ache, nausea, and vomiting that has lasted for a day or more. This has happened several times now so I am finished taking it. Has anyone else experienced stomach problems? F 55 1 months

5  Lose weight for daughter's wedding Constipated first couple days, then the usual oily stools (or worse!) with too much fat intake. Works for me. It keeps me from cheating on my diet. It's simple, if you eat too much fat you may not make it to the toilet in time. And it's not like you can eat fat and not take a pill to escape the side effects because it stays in your system for several days. You can still have a drink because alcohol is sugar, not fat. When I need something sweet I eat licorice which has no fat. F 54 4 months

1  to lose weight the usual oily discharge, wind, tiredness, bloating Am very disappointed. Have lost 1kg or 2lb, and honestly that is probably more like a normal fluctuation than a loss. With the more careful diet I've been on (to avoid the 'explosive nasties') I would have expected to have lost about 4kg anyway even without the Xenical. I think it is making me hang on to the weight. I even jumped up and down on the scales this morning to make sure that they weren't stuck! (and in frustration). Doesn't it work for some people or something? F 54 6 weeks
