AROMASIN  (EXEMESTANE):  This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemestane is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemestane decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Exemestane is usually not used in women of childbearing age.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  bc/st 1/nonmet./6.1 cm/est. pos 3/11/13 -The hotflashes have improved somewhat. However, I am sick of the constant perspiring!! My skin is messed up (was always complimented on my skin looking so young before). Aged. Am on DHEA cream for vag. dryness. Seems to help. The headaches at night are maddening. I NEED SLEEP. I was only stage one with no metastases (spelled right?) Had total mastectomy with recon. I wonder if this is necessary. Dr. said contributing to osteopenia (precursor to osteoporis). AS OF 4/25, onc gave permission to go off!!! Said no proof after 5 years of hormone therapy that there is any further benefit. Said my prognosis is 99%plus because I did the hormone therapy. I went 7 years, so it is pretty certain. Onc said because I had chemo before surgery, had total mast., and have been clean for 7 years with the hormone therapy and because of the type of cancer it was, my prognosis is practically 100% without further aromasin or subs. Praise God!! Worth asking the questions!! F 55 0 days

1  estrogen fed breast cancer I have not taken this drug. I chose to have a total vaginal hysterectomy with removal of my ovaries. There are 3 places that estrogen comes from. Ovaries, Adrenal Glands and Fat Cells. I have removed my ovaries and I eat very well and exercise. I would rather live a quality life than one filled with pain. I'm mentally stable and love life. I've read so many cases of women who are taking these estrogen blockers and still have a recurrance. I took femara and by the 4th day I couldn't straighten out my left middle finger, had back pain and headaches. It's a choice you have to make. I wish everyone the best and remember one thing. You're in charge of your own life. There are success stories of people who contine to keep cancer at bay by the way they choose to live. Exercise and diet go hand in hand, one without the other will not work. I went straight into menopause after surgery but I'm taking suppliments that are estrogen free to handle the hot flashes. If you need any positive reinforcement please email me. I'll be happy to help. I'm not a doctor, just a woman who has had breast cancer and chooses quality of life. F 46 0 days

2  stage 1 lobular breast cancer Because Arimidex caused so many side effects (I posted several times on the Arimidex page), my doctor suggested trying Aromasin. After taking just one pill, I had painful, sudden reflux causing painful, long-lasting burning in my esophagus. Arimidex had also caused many digestive problems, but not the terrible burning. The original side effects from Arimidex were nearly gone when I started Aromasin, but it made the digestion problems start all over again: reflux, burning, bloating, gas all the time, smelly stools, and loose stools. With this much discomfort and interference with my daily activities, I stopped at one pill and will wait till symptoms improve and try again. If this does not work, I am stopping altogether. My surgeon is wonderful and agreed with me that existing in misery in order to take a pill that may (or may not) help with a recurrence of cancer isn't much of a life. I'd rather be functional and enjoy life to the fullest than be miserable for five years taking a medicine that my body is clearly rejecting! It concerns me that this type of medicine may have long lasting effects on our bodies. Reading the posts for Arimidex and Femara nearly bring tears to my eyes -- we are not making this up, yet it seems that we have to defend ourselves if we have a doctor who refuses to acknowledge with compassion what we are going through. That's why I quit two oncologists and have a new, very understanding and empathetic doctor. What I want as a patient is to be heard. F 66 1 days

1  Stage 2 ductal carcinoma Painful & achy joints, even finger, wrist, thumb pain. UTIs, although I'm sure my oncologist would disagree with me re: medicine as a cause. My brain feels like it is in a permanent fog state. Was on anastrozole for short time. Joint pain some days almost unbearable. I would sit on the sofa with heating pad. Dr then gave me a hiatus for about two months. Pain got better but didn't go away. Dr then started me on Exemestane (Aromasin). Been on about two months. Had pretty bad joint pain early, then subsided. Only had joint pain periodically. Have noticed lately that discomfort is coming more & more frequently. Had UTI about 2 1/2 months ago & now I have another one. It's weird, but, there are days when I feel normal when I go to the BR. Then like today, I'm miserable feeling pressure everytime I go to the BR. It feels like I have a constant bladder infection. Can anyone else identify with these symptoms? F 67 1 days

2  DCIS, non-invasive breast cancer Extreme fatigue, no motivation, foggy brain. I've never felt so exhausted in my entire life. I can't get off the couch and all I want to do is sleep. I feel like I'm a walking zombie. I've never been so tired in my whole life. I am extremely active, exercise daily, and have no energy now to do anything. I can't concentrate and I can't put simple sentences together. I'm not sure if the benefit of this drug outweighs the side effects. I don't know what to do. I don't want the cancer to come back but I feel like my quality of life has gone to nothing. F 43 6 days

1  Estrogen+ ductal carcinoma stage 3 I have extreme excruciating pain shoulder to shoulder, neck, low back, left butt and all down left leg, burning feet, left knee excruciating chronic pain (x-ray showed normal), hair loss, vision issues sometimes, short term memory loss, brain fog, trigger thumb, rash between implants, severe anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, periodontal disease with upper teeth loosening, I have to use electric wheelchair cart at store because walking or standing much is impossible, Raynaud syndrome, cold intolerance, osteoporosis on right side. Everything happened after taking hormone blockers and getting silicone implants put in and gets worse by the year. I've only had both 4 years total now! Is it Implants breast implant illness or is it estrogen blockers OR BOTH? It took exactly 4 days to start feeling pain become even worse! I've tried 5 different estrogen blockers now the annastozol wasn't too bad but messed up and doubled my liver function enzymes. All others have just increased my pain and anxiety but this one made it so bad and so fast it was crazy. Definitely stopping this one now. I will just try to exercise and eat healthy and pray to God nightly to keep me healthy and alive. F 59 7 days

1  DCIS stage I 1999, new DCIS 2015 UTI, constant feeling of UTI & yeast infections, joint pain-worse in thumbs, severe weight gain, swelling in hands, headaches, memory problems, I tried Arimidex first for 2 months with horrible results. I quit taking that for 2 months & went on Aromasin for 10 days. I was treated for a UTI, but the feeling of the UTI never went away. Still have pain going to bathroom, have to use cream for yeast infection every day or pain comes back. I stopped taking Aromasin & I hope this feeling will go away. These AIs are horrible. I will not take again F 63 10 days

1  Stage 2B Metastatic Breast Cancer Weight Gain, Nausea, bone pain, developed protruding growths on my tendons in my hands, foot pain, acne, menopausal symptoms even though I have already gone through menopause, water retention, craving for sweets, a veeling of fullness or heaviness all over my body. Only someone who has taken this drug should prescribe it! Of couse the drs don't tell you about the side effects because they have never taken it. My dr actually said and I quote " I can't believe you would go through Chemo and then question me about taking a little pill" I said the reason I was questioning him was because I was scared to death and I had cancer, all he had was a degree! I asked him did he have cancer? Has he gone through this? He said no, I said so pretty much you don't know the answer right? " He was so pissed off at me but I don't care, it is my body, my breasts, my life and I have a right to know. I have 4 more years to go on this drug and I am afraid that it is only doing me harm vs getting rid of any cancer in my body. The chemotherapy I did for 8 months wasn't this bad. If I thought I could get away with not taking this drug and be "normal" again I would stop it in a heartbeat. Just typing this is making my hands ache. it is a horrible thing to not be able to discuss the side effects with someone who knows what they are talking about. There are very few drs that have been through this so of course they say that there are no side effects, they have never taken this drug. they perhaps should listen to the people that have taken the drug but none of us have those things that they have,,,,a degree, all we have is cancer.
